Newton Graceland (Japanese: ムゲン・グレイスランド Mugen Graceland) is a character that appears in Giratina and the Sky Warrior. He is a talented scholar specializing in study of the Reverse World who is beneficial to Ash and his friends during the movie.

History

Newton was Zero's mentor in years past. Together, they created a machine that would copy the power of Giratina to travel between dimensions, allowing them free access to the Reverse World. Although they had been close previously, the two clashed when Newton discovered his invention would cause a horrific fate to Giratina, possibly sacrificing it, which would violate the researcher's oath of never harming a Pokémon. He therefore erased the designs.

Later, after Zero rebuilt and deployed the machine, Newton was forced to hack into the device's central computer and destroy it himself. He was later seen at Gracidea watching Shaymin depart. Newton may have reconciled with Zero at the end of the movie as he helped him out of the frozen Megarig; both cracking a smile at each other.

Newton reappeared in the credits of Arceus and the Jewel of Life where he visited Zero in prison after recovering Infi's data from the Megarig.

Technology

Newton is a master of machinery. His expansive backpack is shown to contain numerous robotic arms, which appear to be able to move seemingly at will in order to manipulate objects, or, as shown in the movie, type on a computer keyboard. He also utilizes a small, handheld computer and a high-tech viewing lens, although both are handled by the robotic arms. The small handheld computer guides Newton in his adventure in the Reverse World, it also shows the location of the portal.

Trivia

  • Newton shares both his English and Japanese voice actors with Goone.

Name origin

"Mugen" (無限) means "infinity". Spelled with different kanji (夢幻), it could also mean "dreams", "fantasy" or "visions".

Newton may come from the famous Isaac Newton, who developed the concept of gravity, and Newton Graceland lived in the Reverse World, where gravity can be stronger or weaker, depending on the location. He may also be named for British guitarist Newton Faulkner, who has the same hair color as him and a similar haircut and beard. Newton Graceland's use of robotic arms throughout the movie may be a nod to the title of Newton Faulkner's debut album, Hand Built by Robots, and its cover artwork, which features a huge robotic arm.

His last name may be a reference to Gracidea.
