Necrozma is the game mascot of both Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, appearing on their boxarts as Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma, respectively. Necrozma, Solgaleo, and Lunala are often collectively referred to as the light trio by fans. It is associated with the guardian deities. It is related to the Ultra Beasts, but its grouping with them is however unconfirmed.
* Dawn Wings Necrozma, a fusion with Lunala using the N-Lunarizer
* Ultra Necrozma, a form obtainable when either Dusk Mane Necrozma or Dawn Wings Necrozma uses Ultra Burst

As both Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma, it is the game mascot of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, respectively.
Biology
Necrozma is a vaguely humanoid Pokémon whose body appears to be constructed out of a black crystalline material. The black color is a result of impurities building up within it as a result of its deep slumber. The large protrusion attached to its head is its tail, which has a row of three large spikes along the top and is white in the back with a dark gray symbol resembling a star in the center. Its face is actually a prism-like object known as the brain prism, which possesses a collection of multicolored shapes that resemble eyes. While absorbing light, this brain prism glows white. Its thin arms have disproportionately large hands with three claws. Jutting out of the back of each hand is a whitish crystal that darkens toward the tip, and each elbow has a hook-like spike. Two large spikes jut from each shoulder and there is a row of smaller spikes along each side of its body. Its feet have three hook-like toes each.

Necrozma originates from Ultra Space and is capable of opening and traveling through Ultra Wormholes. It once had the ability to give light, but lost this ability after being injured by ancestors of the Ultra Recon Squad in an attempt to steal its light; Professor Kukui and Lillie theorize that the Sparkling Stones used to perform Z-Moves are fragments of Necrozma's body that it lost upon this injury. According to the Ultra Recon Squad, the light that radiates from Necrozma is the aura that surrounds the Trainer and Pokémon while performing a Z-Move and the aura surrounding a Totem Pokémon. This energy is consumed by other Pokémon such as Ultra Beasts. Necrozma displays extremely violent behavior due to the constant, maddening pain it suffers in its incomplete state. Desperate for the light it requires to sustain itself and regain its original form, Necrozma steals light from other beings and places. This behavior caused it to be feared as a "pillager of light" in ancient Alola. When Necrozma absorbs light from a world, that world becomes shrouded in darkness until the stolen light is returned. Necrozma loves Necrozma Treats made by Snacksworth, who once encountered and roared loudly to intimidate it in the past.

Necrozma is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the moves Prismatic Laser and Photon Geyser. It is also the only known Pokémon that can have Prism Armor as an Ability.

Biology
Forms
Necrozma is a Pokémon whose body appears to be constructed out of black crystalline material; its disproportionately large arms have three claws jutting out of them, as well as a single large whitish crystal protruding backwards from each arm. Its small legs bend backwards like a bird's and have three toes each. However, it does not seem to use them as it can naturally levitate through unknown methods. A single wing grows out of each of its shoulders, which resembles a hook. The large protrusion attached to its head is its tail, which is white in the back with a dark gray symbol resembling a star in the center. This part of the tail absorbs light that it converts to lasers, and glows when it does. The sides of its head and the top of its tail are covered in spikes. Its face is actually a prism-like object known as the brain prism, which possesses a collection of multicolored shapes that resemble eyes.
Necrozma has three additional forms: Dusk Mane Necrozma, Dawn Wings Necrozma, and Ultra Necrozma.

Necrozma can take control of Solgaleo or Lunala by fusing with them, dominating their bodies and eclipsing their minds to assume its Dusk Mane Necrozma or Dawn Wings Necrozma forms, respectively. However, Necrozma is also able to coexist with its host willingly, regardless of fusion. Because Necrozma is forcibly absorbing their limitless light energy, Solgaleo and Lunala constantly glow while fused. In both cases, the host's body is covered in pieces of Necrozma's body, which are arranged like armor, and Necrozma wields powers that exceed its respective host; it's powerful enough to open multiple Ultra Wormholes at once across a large area. When fused to either Solgaleo or Lunala, Necrozma becomes uncontrollably vicious and constantly rampages, treating anything it sees as an enemy and brutally attacking them with either its claws or its lasers, which can cut through anything. As seen in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Necrozma can fuse with Solgaleo and Lunala without the need for N-Solarizer or N-Lunarizer.

;Dusk Mane Necrozma
Dusk Mane Necrozma resembles an armored Solgaleo with Necrozma as body armor. Dusk Mane Necrozma has armor around its paws, head, and sides. Necrozma's tail splits into two and attaches to the sides of Solgaleo's torso and its large claws extend from Solgaleo's back. The front feet have five black claws attached to them with two V-shaped crystals on top of it while the back foot has only three claws. It has a triangular helmet with a long, thin antenna on each side and Necrozma's brain prism is prominently displayed. Solgaleo's own eyes and nose are visible as bright, blue lights. The host's tail gains three black spikes attached to each other, as well as three spikes under the chin. A structure similar to one of Necrozma's legs extends from its back. Using the armor on its chest, it is able to propel itself by shooting black light.

Dusk Mane Necrozma and Solgaleo are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Sunsteel Strike. They are also the only known Pokémon capable of using the Z-Move Searing Sunraze Smash.

Dusk Mane Necrozma has the appearance of a Radiant Sun phase Solgaleo combined with parts of base Necrozma. Necrozma's tail splits into two and attaches to the sides of Solgaleo's torso. The front feet have five black claws attached to it with two V-shaped crystals on top of it while the back foot has only three claws. Necrozma's head and arm have attached onto Solgaleo's back as extra arms with the large crystals on Necrozma's arms disappearing in the process. The tail gains a three black spikes attached to each other. Solgaleo's face gains three spikes under the chin while a scalene triangular helmet attaches itself to Solgaleo's head, with two long horns rearranged from Necrozma's wings on both sides of the helmet. Two light blue eyes and nose are visible within the helmet. Necrozma's brain prism has been inserted inside the helmet and is visible as a multicolored triangle. Using the split tail on its sides, Dusk Mane Necrozma can propel forward using black light.
;Dawn Wings Necrozma
Dawn Wings Necrozma resembles an armored Lunala with Necrozma as body armor. Dawn Wings Necrozma has armor around its torso, head, and certain parts of its wings and tail. It also has a triangular helmet with the brain prism visible, as well as Lunala's own eyes visible as glowing pink lights. Necrozma's arms extend from the center of its chest. The armor surrounding its body has two large spikes jutting up from around its shoulders and four, glowing pink lights in the center. On its lower back are two thin, antennae-like growths extending downward. A structure similar to Necrozma's tail extends from the center of its back, and like its Dusk Mane form, can be used as a form of propulsion. There are eleven crystalline spikes attached around the body, four each on the wings, and three on Lunala's tail. These spines are capable of firing dark energy.

Dawn Wings Necrozma has the appearance of a Full Moon phase Lunala combined with parts of base Necrozma. Necrozma's head attaches to Lunala's chest in the form of black V-shaped armor with four glowing pink shapes visible underneath. Necrozma's arms are now attached to the lower part of the chest armor with the large crystals disappearing as well. The tail has now split in two and attached to Lunala's back. There are eleven crystalline spikes attached around the body: four each on the wings and three on Lunala's tail. On the front side of its head is a scalene triangular helmet with two bright pink eyes visible underneath. Necrozma's brain prism has been inserted inside the helmet and is visible as a multicolored triangle. Using the split tail on its back, Dawn Wings Necrozma can propel forward using black light.
Dawn Wings Necrozma and Lunala are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Moongeist Beam. They are also the only known Pokémon capable of using the Z-Move Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom.

Ultra Necrozma is said to be Necrozma's true form. It is a colossal dragon with parts of Necrozma's base form rearranged. Its body is made entirely of light that is produced from the brain prism, which is no longer visible. Ultra Necrozma has a long, spiked tail and a head resembling a shining star with three long horns on the sides and top. On each side of its head are two wing-like protrusions with another set of two smaller ones on the underside of its head. Both eyes contain a multitude of colors, though the left eye is primarily red while the right is primarily blue. In this form, Necrozma's arms have become Ultra Necrozma's feet. Its legs and feet have now become the top part of the upper set of wings connected to its shoulders while its feet have become the upper part of the lower set of wings connected to its hips. Its tail becomes a piece of chest armor while the star shaped symbol has now moved to the back of its head. Its head has now become a piece of armor attached to its face. As Ultra Necrozma, all of the pieces of Necrozma's base form have now become a shining golden color, though it will return to black if the light it has stolen escapes. Ultra Necrozma has a body temperature of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which enable it to burn or melt through anything, with the laser's power increasing to a distance of 18 miles.
;Ultra Necrozma
Once it absorbs enough light and Z-Power, Necrozma can undergo a process called Ultra Burst to reclaim its true form: Ultra Necrozma, a colossal dragon mostly comprised of pure light energy that it had stored from a great energy source, such as Solgaleo or Lunala, before its transformation. This body of light is supported by a sort of skeleton made from the various pieces of Necrozma's crystalline body; these pieces take on a golden glow from the light, but they return to black without it. Its sheer size makes it the tallest known Psychic Pokémon. Its head is surrounded by several spikes and a pair of small wings, which causes it to resemble an eight-pointed star; there is also a small, lighter eight-pointed star on the back of its head. Its face is armored and has multicolored Heterochromia iridum eyes; the left eye is primarily red, while the right is mainly blue. It has two pairs of wings: one around its shoulders and one around its hips. While the wings themselves are made of light, the arm portions are made of its former legs and shoulders, respectively. Its former arms now cover its lower legs, and what was once its tail covers its chest. Finally, it has a long tail with a row of spikes along the top. As seen in both the Full Moon and Many Arms! and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's climax, Ultra Necrozma can use Ultra Burst without the Ultranecrozium Z and/or fusion to regain its true form.

Necrozma was discovered dwelling deep underground, where it had been asleep for ages, it was later discovered to have originated from Ultra Space. Due to the peculiar nature of its body, the power it wields, and the rumors that it came from another world in the distant past, it is speculated that it may be related to the Ultra Beasts, if it is not actually one itself; however, the International Police have no records of it ever emerging from an Ultra Wormhole so its classification is still uncertain. Despite being pitch-black, it constantly refracts light like a prism. Light acts as the source of its energy, and it can concentrate this light to fire lasers. When it absorbs light, its brain prism glows white. It is known to be incredibly vicious, firing off laser beams at anything around it, while also appearing to be in pain while searching for light.
Necrozma is at its full power in this form, radiating energy that has all sorts of effects on living beings and even nature itself. Its body temperature exceeds 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5,540 degrees Celsius); anything that it touches will melt from the extreme heat. It can fire laser beams from every part of its body, and these lasers can reach over 18 miles away, burning through everything in their path. While swinging its four wings around, Ultra Necrozma uses its superheated claws to tear its opponents to shreds. As seen in The Prism Between Light and Darkness!, when Necrozma uses up all its light, it reverts to its lightless form and enters into a deep slumber unless it absorbs more light.

Necrozma is capable of opening and traveling through Ultra Wormholes, though it can open up multiple Ultra Wormholes at once while in its Dusk Mane or Dawn Wings forms. Whenever Necrozma changes into its three different forms, it rearranges it body parts in order to adapt. The people of Ultra Megalopolis refer to Necrozma as the "Blinding One" (Japanese: かがやきさま Radiant One) as it once had the ability to give light, which affects and impacts all livings things and nature that come into contact with it. This light led to existence of Z-Power and the auras that surround Totem Pokémon when Necrozma shared it with the native beings of Alola. In its base form, Necrozma can control light, but lost the ability to create it after being injured under unknown circumstances thought to have involved the people of Ultra Megalopolis. In an effort to restore itself to its original state, it is compelled to steal the light from other places to sustain itself. Professor Kukui and Lillie theorize that the Sparkling Stones used to perform Z-Moves are fragments of Necrozma's body that it lost to the aforementioned injury.
Ultra Necrozma is the only known Pokémon capable of using the Z-Move Light That Burns the Sky. It is also the only known Pokémon that can have Neuroforce as an Ability.

Necrozma is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the moves Prismatic Laser and Photon Geyser, the latter of which can be upgraded into the exclusive Z-Move Light That Burns the Sky while in its Ultra Necrozma form. Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma can also learn Solgaleo and Lunala's signature moves Sunsteel Strike and Moongeist Beam, respectively, and upgrade them to their exclusive Z-Moves Searing Sunraze Smash and Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom.

Evolution
Form data
Necrozma has three additional forms: Dusk Mane Necrozma, Dawn Wings Necrozma, and Ultra Necrozma. All three of these forms were introduced in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Dusk Mane Necrozma is the form it attains from absorbing Solgaleo. The player can induce and undo this fusion with the N-Solarizer. After fusing, Necrozma will attempt to learn Sunsteel Strike, and can hold Solganium Z to access Solgaleo's exclusive Z-Move, Searing Sunraze Smash. Its cry is a combination of normal Necrozma and Solgaleo's cries.

Dawn Wings Necrozma is the form it attains from absorbing Lunala. The player can induce and undo this fusion with the N-Lunarizer. After fusing, Necrozma will attempt to learn Moongeist Beam, and can hold Lunalium Z to access Lunala's exclusive Z-Move, Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom. Its cry is a combination of normal Necrozma and Lunala's cries.

If Necrozma separates from Solgaleo or Lunala while it knows the borrowed move (Sunsteel Strike or Moongeist Beam), that move will be forgotten. If the borrowed move was its only move, Necrozma will learn Confusion.

Due to the mechanics of the N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer, each player can have a maximum of one Dusk Mane Necrozma and one Dawn Wings Necrozma at a time per game (though having both at the same time requires trading or transferring for a second Necrozma). If it is fused with Solgaleo or Lunala, Necrozma cannot be traded, released, or deposited into Bank or HOME.

Ultra Necrozma is a third form Necrozma can attain if it enters a battle in its Dusk Mane or Dawn Wings form while holding its exclusive Z-Crystal, Ultranecrozium Z, at which point the player can use the Ultra Burst command from the move menu to transform it into Ultra Necrozma. Once transformed, Ultra Necrozma can also use the Ultranecrozium Z on a subsequent turn to upgrade Photon Geyser into its exclusive Z-Move, Light That Burns the Sky. Ultra Necrozma will revert to its previous form when it faints or when the battle ends. Ultra Burst can only be used once per battle, even if the player has multiple Necrozma or revives a fainted Necrozma. Ultra Necrozma is only obtainable in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Trivia
Trivia
* Necrozma has many differences from the other members of its trio. It is the only member:
** To have its own exclusive Z-Move and Z-Crystal (Solgaleo and Lunala share theirs with Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Necrozma, respectively).
** Without a pre-evolved form.
** To have more than one signature Ability, as it has two.
** With multiple signature moves.
** With a base stat that is not a prime number (Dusk Mane, Dawn Wings, and Ultra Necrozma's Speed stats).
* Necrozma's base form shares its battle theme with Solgaleo and Lunala.
* Necrozma's base form shares its battle theme with Solgaleo and Lunala.
* In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Necrozma has a catch rate of 3.
* In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and Sword and Shield, Necrozma has a catch rate of 255.
* In Sun and Moon, Necrozma has a base experience yield of 120.
* Dawn Wings Necrozma is tied with Giratina, Lunala, and List of Pokémon with form differences Calyrex for the highest base stat total of all Ghost Pokémon.
* Ultra Necrozma is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 754.
* Ultra Necrozma is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 754.
* Ultra Necrozma is the tallest Psychic Pokémon.
* Necrozma has the most shapes of all Pokémon with a total of four between its different forms.
* Necrozma has the most body styles of all Pokémon with a total of 4.
* Necrozma's status as an Ultra Beast differs between media.
** In the core series games, Necrozma is not an Ultra Beast. Beast Balls are ineffective against it and regular Poké Balls are normally effective against it. Additionally, Necrozma's Pokémon Sun Pokédex entry and Dulse clarify that it is similar to the Ultra Beasts, but not one of them.
*** In HOME, Necrozma is not registered as a species of Ultra Beast.
** In the anime, it, alongside the other members of the light trio and their pre-evolved forms, are referred to as Ultra Beasts before their true identities are discovered. Necrozma is given the codename of UB Black (Japanese: UB:BLACK UB: Black).
** In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Necrozma is considered an Ultra Beast, with Beast Balls being used to attempt and eventually succeed in catching it.
** In the TCG, Dusk Mane, Dawn Wings, and Ultra Necrozma are classified as Ultra Beasts, while its base form is not.
** In Pokémon Duel, all forms of Necrozma are considered Ultra Beasts.
* Necrozma has access to the most exclusive Z-Crystals, with a total of three.
* Necrozma's effort value yield of 1 Attack and 2 Special Attack is unique.
* Of the Pokémon capable of fusion with another Pokémon, Necrozma is the only one that has an additional transformation. It is also the only Pokémon in which the player can legitimately have both fused forms on a single save file due to the fact that each of Necrozma's fusions utilize their own Key Item.
* Necrozma is the first Pokémon to serve as the main antagonist of a core series game.
* Dusk Mane Necrozma is the only Steel Pokémon to not be able to learn Steel Beam.

Origin
Origin
Necrozma could be based off the concept of prisms and light refraction. Given the first part of its name ("necro"), its black coloration, and the star symbol on the back of its head, it could also be based off a black dwarf (which is a theoretical "dead star" that has ceased to emit light or heat), or given its ability to absorb light, it could also be based off a black hole (which is formed from a collapsed star).
Necrozma could be based on the concept of prisms and light refraction. This may tie to Sun and Moon being codenamed "ニジ" (Rainbow), as well as Hawaii, the location Alola was inspired by, being referred to as the "rainbow state". Its design may also incorporate similarities, both literal and symbolic, to black dwarfs, black holes, or neutron stars, which may be represented by the star symbol on the back of its head. Necrozma's concept and design may be inspired by multiple depictions of aliens across various forms of media. This is indicated by its unusually proportioned limbs, large head, and Psychic type, which is often associated with intelligence, for aliens are often depicted to have more intellect than humans in science fiction. It also remotely resembles a dragon's skeleton, which could correlate to its Pokédex entry in Sword and Shield mentioning that it has spent a long time "slumbering underground."

Necrozma's Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings forms may be based on the concept of Solar eclipse and lunar eclipses. The forms' alternate names in Japanese, 日食 nisshoku (solar eclipse) and 月食 gesshoku (lunar eclipse) can also be literally translated as "eating the sun/moon", reflecting how Necrozma absorbs Solgaleo or Lunala to assume those forms, as well as historical interpretations of eclipses as something stealing or eating the sun or moon. Its Ultra Necrozma form may be based on giant stars.

Its Ultra Necrozma form may be based on giant stars or supernovae. Design-wise, Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma retain Solgaleo's lion and Lunala's bat bases, respectively, while Ultra Necrozma resembles a four-winged wyvern. The fact that Necrozma transforms into a Dragon could be based on legends about the Moʻo.

Necrozma's original form resembling an angelic being of light may be based on the concept of a fallen angel. Specifically, it may draw inspiration from Lucifer, who is viewed as a bringer of light and associated with Venus, the third brightest natural object in the sky behind only the Sun and the Moon, which are represented by the other 2 members of the light trio.

Necrozma (Japanese: ネクロズマ Necrozma) is a Psychic-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, Necrozma has the following three forms:

Necrozma is the game mascot of both Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, appearing on their boxarts as Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma, respectively. Necrozma, Solgaleo, and Lunala are often collectively referred to as the light trio by fans. It is associated with the guardian deities. It is related to the Ultra Beasts, but its grouping with them is however unconfirmed.

Biology

Necrozma's body is primarily prismatic and black due to the amount of impurities in its system

While absorbing light, this brain prism glows white.[1] Its thin arms have disproportionately large hands with three claws.

Forms

Necrozma has three additional forms: Dusk Mane Necrozma, Dawn Wings Necrozma, and Ultra Necrozma.

Necrozma can take control of Solgaleo or Lunala by fusing with them, dominating their bodies and eclipsing their minds to assume its Dusk Mane Necrozma or Dawn Wings Necrozma forms, respectively. However, Necrozma is also able to coexist with its host willingly, regardless of fusion[2][3]. As seen in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Necrozma can fuse with Solgaleo and Lunala without the need for N-Solarizer or N-Lunarizer.

Dusk Mane Necrozma

Using the armor on its chest, it is able to propel itself by shooting black light.[4]

Dusk Mane Necrozma and Solgaleo are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Sunsteel Strike. They are also the only known Pokémon capable of using the Z-Move Searing Sunraze Smash.

Dawn Wings Necrozma

These spines are capable of firing dark energy.[5]

Dawn Wings Necrozma and Lunala are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Moongeist Beam. They are also the only known Pokémon capable of using the Z-Move Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom.

Ultra Necrozma

Once it absorbs enough light and Z-Power, Necrozma can undergo a process called Ultra Burst to reclaim its true form: Ultra Necrozma, a colossal dragon mostly comprised of pure light energy that it had stored from a great energy source, such as Solgaleo or Lunala, before its transformation. This body of light is supported by a sort of skeleton made from the various pieces of Necrozma's crystalline body; these pieces take on a golden glow from the light, but they return to black without it. Its sheer size makes it the tallest known Psychic-type Pokémon. Its head is surrounded by several spikes and a pair of small wings, which causes it to resemble an eight-pointed star; there is also a small, lighter eight-pointed star on the back of its head. Its face is armored and has multicolored heterochromic eyes; the left eye is primarily red, while the right is mainly blue. As seen in both the Full Moon and Many Arms! and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's climax, Ultra Necrozma can use Ultra Burst without the Ultranecrozium Z and/or fusion to regain its true form.

Necrozma is at its full power in this form, radiating energy that has all sorts of effects on living beings and even nature itself. Its body temperature exceeds 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5,540 degrees Celsius); anything that it touches will melt from the extreme heat. It can fire laser beams from every part of its body, and these lasers can reach over 18 miles away, burning through everything in their path.[6] While swinging its four wings around, Ultra Necrozma uses its superheated claws to tear its opponents to shreds. As seen in The Prism Between Light and Darkness!, when Necrozma uses up all its light, it reverts to its lightless form and enters into a deep slumber unless it absorbs more light.

Ultra Necrozma is the only known Pokémon capable of using the Z-Move Light That Burns the Sky. It is also the only known Pokémon that can have Neuroforce as an Ability.

Form change

When Necrozma is fused, it tries to learn a new move in the same way that other Pokémon may learn new moves upon evolving. If Necrozma changes to its normal form, it immediately forgets the special move of the form it was in (if it still knows it); if the only move that Necrozma knows is the form's special move, then that move will be replaced with Confusion.

Form data

Necrozma has three additional forms: Dusk Mane Necrozma, Dawn Wings Necrozma, and Ultra Necrozma. All three of these forms were introduced in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

If it is fused with Solgaleo or Lunala, Necrozma cannot be traded, released, or deposited into Pokémon Bank or Pokémon HOME.

Ultra Necrozma is only obtainable in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Trivia

  • Necrozma has many differences from the other members of its trio. It is the only member:
  • Necrozma's base form shares its battle theme with Solgaleo and Lunala.
  • In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and Pokémon Sword and Shield, Necrozma has a catch rate of 255.
  • In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Necrozma has a base experience yield of 120.
  • Dawn Wings Necrozma is tied with Giratina, Lunala, and Shadow Rider Calyrex for the highest base stat total of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
  • Ultra Necrozma is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 754.
  • Necrozma has the most shapes of all Pokémon with a total of four between its different forms.
  • Necrozma's status as an Ultra Beast differs between media.
    • In the core series games, Necrozma is not an Ultra Beast. Beast Balls are ineffective against it and regular Poké Balls are normally effective against it. Additionally, Necrozma's Pokémon Sun Pokédex entry and Dulse clarify that it is similar to the Ultra Beasts, but not one of them.
      • In Pokémon HOME, Necrozma is not registered as a species of Ultra Beast.
    • In the anime, it, alongside the other members of the light trio and their pre-evolved forms, are referred to as Ultra Beasts before their true identities are discovered. Necrozma is given the codename of UB Black (Japanese: UB:BLACK UB: Black).
    • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Necrozma is considered an Ultra Beast, with Beast Balls being used to attempt and eventually succeed in catching it.
    • In the TCG, Dusk Mane, Dawn Wings, and Ultra Necrozma are classified as Ultra Beasts, while its base form is not.
    • In Pokémon Duel, all forms of Necrozma are considered Ultra Beasts.
  • Necrozma has access to the most exclusive Z-Crystals, with a total of three.
  • Necrozma's effort value yield of 1 Attack and 2 Special Attack is unique.
  • Of the Pokémon capable of fusion with another Pokémon, Necrozma is the only one that has an additional transformation. It is also the only Pokémon in which the player can legitimately have both fused forms on a single save file due to the fact that each of Necrozma's fusions utilize their own Key Item.
  • Necrozma is the first Pokémon to serve as the main antagonist of a core series game.
  • Dusk Mane Necrozma is the only Steel-type Pokémon to not be able to learn Steel Beam.

Origin

Necrozma could be based on the concept of prisms and light refraction. This may tie to Pokémon Sun and Moon being codenamed "ニジ" (Rainbow), as well as Hawaii, the location Alola was inspired by, being referred to as the "rainbow state". It also remotely resembles a dragon's skeleton, which could correlate to its Pokédex entry in Pokémon Sword mentioning that it has spent a long time "slumbering underground."

Necrozma's Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings forms may be based on the concept of solar and lunar eclipses, respectively. The forms' alternate names in Japanese, 日食 nisshoku (solar eclipse) and 月食 gesshoku (lunar eclipse) can also be literally translated as "eating the sun/moon", reflecting how Necrozma absorbs Solgaleo or Lunala to assume those forms. The fact that Necrozma transforms into a Dragon-type could be based on legends about the Moʻo.

Name origin

Necrozma may be a combination of νεκρός nekrós (Ancient Greek for dead), 黒 kuro (black), and πρῖσμα prîsma (Ancient Greek for prism) or plasma (state of matter most commonly found in stars). It may also involve Project Ozma, an experiment made to search for extraterrestrial life.
