Professor Oak tells Willow that he discovered a mysterious box from the same place the ancient text originated. Oak tells Willow that the box merely contained a lump of metal, but that metal was the same element as Meltan. Willow asks Oak to send him the mysterious box.

A few days later, the Mystery Box arrives and Willow opens it, causing numerous wild Meltan to appear. Willow concludes that the Mystery Box must be opened in a natural environment, rather than from inside a lab, to cause Meltan to appear. Shortly after, the Mystery Box closes on its own and will not reopen. Oak says that the only thing they can do is wait until it opens again. To further their research, Oak then requests Willow to capture as many Meltan as he can.

Willow reports back to Oak after catching a lot of Meltan. He notes that Meltan has a tendency to melt down and consume metal, and that they try to merge with each other. During this conversation, the Meltan Willow captured merged together to form a new Pokémon, which Oak confirmed was {{p|Melmetal}} from the ancient texts. Willow, astonished that a Mythical Pokémon could [[evolution|evolve]], sends the Melmetal to Oak.
