When Ruby was rescued by Sapphire from a pack of wild Mightyena, she took him to her Secret Base, he thought she was a Pokémon of some sort, and was shocked to the spine when she started talking. The two ended up getting into a fight after he ordered Nana to bite this supposed "Pokémon," and still holding his own Pokémon from fighting back, he phoned Professor Birch on the Pokégear that was in his bag, and was told to choose the "blue Pokémon," which he then chose over the "green one." However, against Sapphire's well-trained Torchic, it was no match even with its type advantage. After Ruby was told the "cave girl" was in fact Birch's daughter, who had been helping him with his field research, they resolved this dispute before a wild Seviper suddenly attacked them. When Sapphire seemingly subdued it, the two decided to make a bet after getting into an argument over Contests and Gym battles, and that the one who wins all the Contests or Gyms in the Hoenn region wins the bet. With Sapphire unconscious from the injuries she received from the Mightyena, Ruby swiftly defeated the Seviper after treating her, and later nicknamed the Mudkip "Mumu." Mumu tended to have a running nose.

Mumu first appeared as a Mudkip in Trying to Trounce Torchic, as one of the two Pokémon that was in Professor Birch's bag. When Ruby was rescued by Sapphire from a pack of wild Mightyena, she took him to her Secret Base. He thought she was a Pokémon of some sort, and was shocked to the spine when she started talking. The two ended up getting into a fight after he ordered Nana to Bite the supposed "Pokémon." Still holding his own Pokémon from fighting back, he phoned Professor Birch on the Pokégear that was in his bag, and was told to choose the "blue Pokémon," which he then chose over the "green one". However, against Sapphire's well-trained Chic, he was no match, even with his type advantage. He later nicknamed him "Mumu" after he defeated a wild Dustox and decided he would be best for the Tough category of Pokémon Contests.

Being that Ruby still was predisposed to Contests rather than battles as his father would intend, Ruby then continued his journey to conquer the Contests, and met several wild Pokémon that attacked him and Mumu, such as wild Dustox and Nuzleaf. In doing so, the boy then decided that he would be best for the "Tough" category of Pokémon Contests. When the two arrived in Slateport City, Mumu finally evolved into a Marshtomp and gained the awe of the Pokémon Fan Club Chairman (who also adored Kiki and Nana), who tried to help Ruby enlist in the Contests there, but with no Hoenn Contest Pass, he wasn't accepted. Instead, the two ended up being dragged into a mire when three Magma Admins kidnapped the two along with Captain Stern. Tied up and put to sleep by the gas Tabitha's Torkoal speed, it wasn't until a while later that Ruby awakened, and Mumu popped out of his ball to help free its owner. Upon realizing that the one interrogating Stern for information now was in cahoots with Tabitha and Courtney, who had attacked him and Sapphire before, Ruby used his Pokéblock-making skills to lure Mack's Slugma into the Submarine they were planning to steal, and after being subjected to his traumatizing illusions, instead seized the opportunity to escape on the emergency escape pod installed in the submarine with a series of Earthquake attacks.
In Tripped Up by Torkoal, Mumu evolved into Marshtomp, gaining the awe of the Pokémon Fan Club Chairman, who also adored Nana and Kiki. He tried to help Ruby enlist in the Contests there, but with no Hoenn Contest Pass, he wasn't accepted. Instead, the two ended up being dragged into a mire when three Magma Admins kidnapped the two along with Captain Stern. When Ruby awakened Mumu popped out of his Poké Ball to help free him, but to no avail. Upon realizing that the one interrogating Stern for information now was in cahoots with Tabitha and Courtney, who had attacked him and Sapphire before, Ruby used his Pokéblock-making skills to lure Blaise's Slugma into the Submarine they were planning to steal. Mumu managed to counter Slugma's fire attacks, but soon fell to Blaise's illusions. After overcoming it, he attacked with Earthquake, allowing the two to reach the escape pod.

In Hanging Around With Slaking I, Mumu battled Ruby's father, Norman. After Nana and Kiki were defeated due to Norman knowing how they attacked it was revealed that they were a distraction for Mumu to set up a Mud Shot attack, which landed a direct hit after shooting through some pipes. Norman quickly counters with Vigoroth and it seems the two were evenly matched. Ruby soon attempts to fire Mumu's high-powered Mud Shot, but it is stopped by Mr. Stone's Castform's Sunny Day.

Awakening quite a while later, Ruby and Mumu drifted all the way to 119 where Ruby was again attacked by a Seviper, this time with a Zangoose, and thanks to their fangs impaling all his party Pokémon's balls, it had to be a wild Feebas that had grown attached to Ruby who finished them off. After reluctantly adding it to his team, Ruby would be stricken with another danger, possibly the worst of all: his infuriated father, who had been tracking him down ever since the beginning of his journey. Nana and Kiki were no match for his Slaking, being that Norman taught the two Pokémon their moves, but Mumu was another story, and with his well-hidden Mud Shot, managed to distract the leader for a while before his Vigoroth began to counter it. Through an unfortunate chain of events, just when the fight seemed to go to a halt with Ruby (Adventures)'s help, both Ruby and Norman's lives would be in peril as they hung from a pipe, and nearly had a deadly fall that they avoided thanks to the Running Shoes he received for his birthday weeks ago.
In It's Absol-lutely a Bad Omen, Mumu advanced Ruby through the Rank of the Tough Contest. In Going to Eleven with Loudred and Exploud I, Mumu is used alongside Ruby's other Pokémon to battle against Courtney and her Ninetales. Although Ruby had a five-to-one advantage, his team was beaten due to Ninetales having control of nine different fireballs.

In I More Than Like You, Luvdisc I, Mumu advanced Ruby through the Super Rank of the Tough Contest. After the contest Mumu is used in Ruby's battle against Wallace alongside the rest of his team, bar Feefee, and loses.

In Master Class with Masquerain, Mumu evolved into Swampert. Soon after Mumu advanced Ruby through the Hyper Rank of the Tough Contest.
With this training, Ruby and Sapphire teamed up again against Maxie and Archie after they insidiously defeated Wallace, and succeeded in driving them away before their Ruby (Adventures) and Sapphire (Adventures) delivered the final blow.

In the Emerald, Mumu appeared in Ruby's party again, but despite being enlisted as one of the three Pokémon he registered with for the Battle Dome tournament, wasn't used to battle Emerald. However, he was the only one of his entire party to be used to move up along the Battle Tower when Guile Hideout seized control of it, and after the villain succeeded in invoking a wish from the Jirachi he captured, Mumu was taught the ultimate Water attack, Hydro Cannon, and teamed up with the 8 other starters to destroy Guile's fake, giant Kyogre monster.
In The Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon X, Mumu, alongside Ruby and Sapphire's other Pokémon, battled Archie and Maxie. He and Chic attempted to deliver a decisive blow, but failed to do any real damage. In The Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon XIV, Mumu and Chic attack the meteor fragment coming from Archie and Maxie, which sends a powerful blast of energy out. The energy hits Maxie and Archie's foreheads, turning them back to normal and stops the power of the Red and Blue Orbs.

In It All Ends Now VIII, Mumu battled alongside the rest of Ruby and Sapphire's Pokémon against Maxie and Archie. Later that day,  Mumu is shown to have won the Master Rank of the Tough Contest, wearing a Yellow Scarf.

Mumu (Japanese: ZUZU), known as Zuzu in Chuang Yi's translations, is a Swampert that Ruby owns in Pokémon Adventures and his fourth Pokémon overall. Ruby was given him from Professor Birch. He is at level 71, his Characteristic is that he "likes to relax", and he is used in Tough Contests.

History

Ruby & Sapphire arc

Mumu meeting Ruby

Mumu earning the Super Ribbon

In Hanging Around With Slaking I, Mumu battled Ruby's father, Norman. After Nana and Kiki were defeated due to Norman knowing how they attacked it was revealed that they were a distraction for Mumu to set up a Mud Shot attack, which landed a direct hit after shooting through some pipes. Norman quickly counters with Vigoroth and it seems the two were evenly matched. Ruby soon attempts to fire Mumu's high-powered Mud Shot, but it is stopped by Mr. Stone's Castform's Sunny Day.

In It's Absol-lutely a Bad Omen, Mumu advanced Ruby through the Normal Rank of the Tough Contest. In Going to Eleven with Loudred and Exploud I, Mumu is used alongside Ruby's other Pokémon to battle against Courtney and her Ninetales. Although Ruby had a five-to-one advantage, his team was beaten due to Ninetales having control of nine different fireballs.

Mumu battling Archie and Maxie

In I More Than Like You, Luvdisc I, Mumu advanced Ruby through the Super Rank of the Tough Contest. After the contest Mumu is used in Ruby's battle against Wallace alongside the rest of his team, bar Feefee, and loses.

In Master Class with Masquerain, Mumu evolved into Swampert. Soon after Mumu advanced Ruby through the Hyper Rank of the Tough Contest.

Emerald arc

Mumu training to learn Hydro Cannon

In Cunning Kirlia, Mumu advanced Ruby through the Battle Dome. Despite being one of his three options to fight against Emerald he was not used.

In Facing Gulpin Is Hard to Swallow, Mumu helped Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, and Noland advance through the Battle Tower to reach Guile Hideout.

In The Final Battle III, Mumu is taught Hydro Cannon. He was soon used alongside Blasty and Silver's Feraligatr to attack with Hydro Cannon to help destroy Guile Hideout's fake Kyogre.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

In Salamence Evolves, Mumu, alongside Chic and Sceptile, trained under Ultima in order to fully master the ultimate moves. The training was issued by Steven Stone and Mr. Stone as part of a plan dedicated to preventing a giant meteoroid from crashing into the planet. With Ruby having business elsewhere, Steven trained Mumu in his Trainer's stead. When Ruby returned in PS604 to stop the attack Zinnia lead on the Sea Mauville, he Mega Evolved Mumu for the first time and used him to battle Zinnia's Goodra.

As Ruby's Pokémon Contest representative for the Toughness category, Mumu exhibits great fortitude and power in contests and battle, becoming Ruby's main powerhouse as the chapter developed. Trivia

 • Although Mumu doesn't evolve into his final stage until Volume 19, the cover art depicts him as a Swampert along with Sapphire's Chic (which by then was already a Blaziken) the volume prior. This might be due to the fact that before being released in volume form, few to several chapters, even within the same arc, may be left uncollected, and so the fans were expected to be aware of his evolution already, which happened mere chapters after the end of this volume. Alternatively, it may just be a result of the fact that Mumu and Chic were always seen in the same evolution stage when placed in a volume cover together, just as Exbo, Feraligatr, and Megaree were in the covers for the Gold, Silver & Crystal arc.
 • Mumu's Contest call is, "Regardless of the effects of time, the toughness that this body encompasses never changes. Boiling with raging Torrent, this is the Pokémon Swampert—Mumu!"
 • Mumu is the only male Pokémon that Ruby currently owns.
