The player's mom (Japanese: おかあさん mother) is a character in every main series Pokémon game. Although different each time, she will always be the one to see her child off on his or her journey with his or her starter Pokémon.

In the games

In the games, when players speaks to their mother, she will heal the party, as there is no Pokémon Center in the town; this is not the case in Johto, in which Professor Elm's lab has a healing machine, and Unova in Black 2 and White 2, in which Aspertia City has a Pokémon Center. In Johto the player's mother will not heal the party, but in Aspertia City, she will. The player's mother may also do several other things specific to the game. When the player is setting off on his or her journey as a Pokémon Trainer, the player's mother will typically give him/her the Running Shoes as a gift, either in person or via a messenger, reading the provided instructions as well.

Kanto

This mother is the mother of Red or Leaf. In Generation I and FireRed and LeafGreen, at the beginning of the games, she will inform the player that Professor Oak wants to see the player. After that, she will heal the player's Pokémon when talked to. This same mother also appears in Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver, telling the player how worried she is about Red, her son, but also how proud she is of him.

Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow
  • If talked to
"Right. All boys leave home someday. It said so on TV. Prof.Oak, next door, is looking for you.
  • If talked to after receiving starter
"<player>, if you drive your Pokémon too hard, they'll dislike you. You should take a rest. <heals party> Oh good! You and your Pokémon are looking great! Take care now!"
Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal
  • First time
"Hi! Red's been away for a long time. He hasn't called either, so I have no idea where he is or what he's been doing. They say that no word is proof that he's doing fine, but I do worry about him."
  • Subsequent times
"I worry about Red getting hurt or sick, but he's a boy. I'm proud that he is doing what he wants to do."
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen
  • If talked to
"...Right. All boys leave home someday/girls dream of traveling, It said so on TV. Oh, yes. Prof. Oak, next door, was looking for you.
  • If talked to after receiving starter
"<player>! You should take a quick rest. <heals party> Oh, good! You and your Pokémon are looking great. Take care now!"
  • If whited out without visiting Pokémon Center
"<player>! Welcome home. It sounds like you had quite an experience. Maybe you should take a quick rest. <heals party> Oh, good! You and your Pokémon are looking great. I just heard from Prof. Oak. He said that Pokémon's energy is measured in HP. If your Pokémon lose their HP, you can restore them at any Pokémon Center. If you're going to travel far away, the smart Trainer stocks up on Potions at the Pokémon Mart. Make me proud, honey! Take care!"
"Dear <player>,
Here is a pair of Running Shoes for my beloved challenger. Remember, I'll always cheer for you! Don't ever give up!
From Mom"

Johto

This mother is the mother of Ethan, Kris, or Lyra. In Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player's mother informs them that the Pokégear has returned from the repair shop. In Generation II, she then helps set the day of the week. She will save the player's money, so that a quarter of the money won from each battle is automatically sent to her, and money can be deposited and withdrawn from her. She occasionally buys decorationsGSC, damage-reducing BerriesHGSS or other items (listed below) with the player's money, then apologizes for spending the money she is saving. Her cooking specialty is the Cinnabar Volcano Burger.

Hoenn

This mother is the mother of Brendan or May and the wife of Norman. In Generation III, the player's mother helps the player move in, and instructs them to set the time on the clock upstairs and to make sure that everything is on their desk. When the player comes back downstairs, she will say that the player's father is on TV; however, the player just missed him.

When the player defeats Norman, she will give an Amulet Coin as a reward.

After the player has entered the Hall of Fame, a news report will be on TV. It will announce that a Pokémon is roaming the Hoenn region, which will be either LatiasS, LatiosR, or it will not distinguish which of the eon duo is the roaming PokémonE, due to static interference. In Emerald, the player's mother will ask if the news report was either about a red creature (Latias) or a blue creature (Latios). The one chosen will then roam Hoenn.

Quotes

"<Player>, we're here, honey! It must be tiring riding with our things in the moving truck. Well, this is Littleroot Town. How do you like it? This is our new home! It has a quaint feel, but it seems to be an easy place to live, don't you think? And, you get your own room, <player>! Let's go inside."
"See, <player>? Isn't it nice in here, too? The mover's Pokémon do all the work of moving us in and cleaning up after. This is so convenient! <Player>, your room is upstairs. Go check it out, dear! Dad bought you a new clock to mark our move here. Don't forget to set it!"
"<Player>, how do you like your new room? Good! Everything's put away neatly! They finished moving everything in downstairs, too. Pokémon movers are so convenient! Oh, you should make sure that everything's all there on your desk."
"Oh! <Player>, <player>! Quick! Come quickly! Look, it's Petalburg Gym! Maybe Dad will be on! Oh… It's over. I think Dad was on, but we missed him. Too bad. Oh, yes. One of Dad's friends lives in town. Prof. Birch is his name. He lives right next door, so you should go over and introduce yourself."
"<Player>! <Player>! Did you introduce yourself to Prof. Birch? Oh! What an adorable Pokémon! You got it from Prof. Birch. How nice! You're your father's child, all right. You look good together with Pokémon! Here, honey! If you're going out on an adventure, wear these Running Shoes. They'll put a zip in your step! To think that you have your very own Pokémon now… Your father will be overjoyed. …But please be careful. If anything happens, you can come home. Go on, go get them, honey!"

Main article: Johanna

Johanna is the mother of Lucas or Dawn. In Generation IV, the player's mother takes on an active lifestyle, competing in Pokémon Super Contests in Hearthome City at times. She gives the player a tuxedo or a dress when they meet at the Super Contest Hall. She also gives the player a Journal at the beginning of the game.

Nuvema Town

This mother is the mother of Hilbert or Hilda. She lives in Nuvema Town, and she met her husband while he was on his own Pokémon journey. Apparently she was once a Trainer and had a journey of her own.

She mostly stays at home but leaves at one point to deliver the Running Shoes. Looker dresses up as her in the player's house after the defeat of Team Plasma.

In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, much like Red's mother in Generation II and IV, she still resides in the same house and tells the player that her son/daughter is out in another region looking for N.

If Memory Link has been activated, she will refer to her son/daughter by the player's name from the game the input friend code is from. Otherwise, she will not refer to them by a name, but rather as her child.

This mother is the mother of Nate or Rosa. She lives in Aspertia City, and is an old friend of Professor Juniper. She is fairly knowledgeable about the various locations in Unova, and used to work as a Pokémon Center receptionist. The Pokémon Centers she is implied to have worked in are located in Nimbasa City and Mistralton City.

In Aspertia City

"Oh, hi! Why, Aurea Juniper! It's been far too long! What can I do for you? ... Wow! A Pokédex... For my child? Why, that's great! I think a journey would be a wonderful experience! What now? She's already here? Oh, for Pete's sake. You never change. Once you've decided on something, you just start going. OK! Bianca, right? A big, green hat. Got it. OK! No worries!"
  • Returning home:
"<player>! I'm home!"
  • When the player leaves their room:
"Do you know Professor Juniper? She's a famous Pokémon researcher. Actually, she's an old friend of mine, and she called me today for the first time in ages! This is out of the blue, but, <player>! Do you want to have a Pokémon?"
No: "What?! That's a shock! I'll ask you again."
Yes: "OK! Step one completed! Well then, do you know what a Pokédex is?"
No: "I see... It's an amazing device that automatically records the Pokémon you encounter! Yet another question! You want a Pokédex, right?"
Yes: "I knew you would! Isn't it amazing how it automatically records Pokémon you encounter? Yet another question! You want a Pokédex, right?"
No: "I don't mean to be selfish, but I'd like it if you were a bit more agreeable. Having a Pokédex means travelling around the world! Think about that for a second. So I'll ask you again... You want a Pokédex, right?"
Yes: "OK! Step two completed! <Player>! Your course of action has been set! A girl names Bianca has come here to meet you! She's Professor Juniper's assistant. I was told to simple look for a big, green hat! That's right! You're going to look for Bianca. And then you'll get a Pokédex and a Pokémon to be your partner! Oh! Your Xtransceiver's in your Bag right? Do you know how to open your Bag?"
No: "I'll send you off with these words from "Adventure Rules." "The X Button is vitally important for Trainers." OK! Off with you now! Go look for Bianca, OK!"
Yes: "The girl's name is Bianca. I was told you should look for a big, green hat! She might be lost because this is her first time here. Go look for her!"
"Oh! Nice to meet you! You must be Bianca, right? And <player> picked Snivy/Tepig/Oshawott, then? Hee hee. Looking good!"
"Oh! I almost forgot! Here! Take these! They're Running Shoes!"
"A perfect fit! I'll read the instructions for you! "Hold the B Button to run faster than normal. Put on the Running Shoes and race around to your heart's content!" Now, you and Snivy/Tepig/Oshawott can run anywhere you want!"
"That's a good idea! Even if it is a single road to the ocean, having a Town Map is always nice. I mean, if you use a Town Map, you'll know all about what the Unova region is like!"
"Bon voyage! Take Snivy/Tepig/Oshawott and see many different Pokémon and people with your own eyes!"

Xtranceiver

  • General talk
"There are many different Pokémon, and even the same kind of Pokémon have individuals with comepletely different Natures! I wonder what kind of Pokémon is a perfect match for you."
"Hi! It's your mom! Where are you right now? Wow, Virbank City! There's a complex there, right? Have you been there yet? The way it looks at night is really quite nice! In side games

Orre

In Pokémon XD, Michael's mom is a researcher at the Pokémon Lab. Her name is Lily and she has a daughter named Jovi. She takes a supportive role throughout the game by working alongside Professor Krane.

Almia

In Almia, the mother of Kellyn or Kate exchanges letters with their family as they attend Ranger School. The family later moves to Chicole Village to be closer to Kellyn or Kate. She also bought the books on the bookshelf. The mother doesn't do much besides look after her youngest child and take care of the player's inactive partner Pokémon. She later has the player perform a Quest where she asks the player to read a recipe off the fridge for her while she cooks.

In the anime

Delia Ketchum, mother of Ash Ketchum

In the anime, each of the main characters which have a player character counterpart have had their mother introduced except for Jimmy and Marina. Unlike the moms in the games, however, all of them lead a moderately more active lifestyle.

Delia, Ash's mom, is shown to travel to most of the Pokémon League competitions that her son takes part in. She also has her own Pokémon, a Mr. Mime, which cleans the house for her.

Lola, Brock's mom, was, for a time, running the Pewter City Gym while Brock was traveling with Ash on his journey. She is an adept Trainer, however her insistence on using Water-type Pokémon—including attempting to shift Pewter City's Gym's traditional type from Rock to Water—is something she and Brock have butted heads over.

Caroline, May's mom, is also shown to travel a bit to watch her daughter's competitions in the Grand Festivals. Unlike her game counterpart, however, she lives in Petalburg City. She also seems to have Pokémon; however, they are never shown.

Johanna, Dawn's mom, apparently lives life very similarly to her own game counterpart. She has a Glameow and an Umbreon, and was formerly a winner of Sinnoh's Grand Festival.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Gold's mother makes an appearance in the beginning of the Gold, Silver & Crystal arc. She often nags him about his messy hairstyle, calling it "explosive". She is based on the mother from Generation II.

Crystal's mother makes her first appearance in Absolutely Azumarill wanting to catch an Azumarill. After meeting up with her daughter she gifts Crystal with Kurt's Poké Balls and requests the capture of a wild Azumarill. After seeing how depressed Crystal after failing to capture Suicune, she recommends that Crystal returns to Mt. Silver to train, smacking her in process. She reappears in the HeartGold & SoulSilver arc where she gives Crystal a new set of clothes (against her will) based on the outfit that Lyra wears.

Ruby's mother appears in the Ruby & Sapphire arc where she can be seen worrying about her son and her husband.

Green's parents appear in the FireRed & LeafGreen arc where they are kidnapped by a Deoxys; they are eventually rescued.

Emerald's mother and father have been stated to be deceased, making him an orphan.

Diamond's mother is Johanna, a former Coordinator. She is the one to give him his winter clothing.

Platinum's mother is Professor Yanase Berlitz, a Pokémon researcher. She was the one who researched Rayquaza and attempted to make a Green Orb to try to control it. She is also the one who sent Platinum to the Sinnoh Battle Frontier to search for information on the Distortion World.

Faitsu's mother was seen accompanying her to her first day at Aspertia City's Trainers' School. She decided to switch Faitsu's school in order to cut off all connections with her past as a Team Plasma member.

Trivia

  • Lily and Johanna are the only in-game mothers to have their name revealed.
  • If the player has $999,999 on hand in HeartGold and SoulSilver, no additional money earned in battle will be sent to the player's mother, contrary to what the end-of-battle dialogue claims.
  • Generation V is the only Generation that introduced two different mother characters for the player. However, Black 2 and White 2 are not the first games in which two mother characters are accessible.
