History

Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver
Gengar and Morty

Gengar first appeared in A Ghost of a Chance in the Burned Tower, which Ash and his friends mistook for the Ecruteak Gym. When Pikachu and Togepi disappeared into a small hole within the Burned Tower, Morty had Gengar round up the Gastly and Haunter living in the tower in order to find the two.

When Team Rocket ran off with Pikachu and Togepi, Gengar appeared and tripped them with Lick. After it had knocked Pikachu and Togepi out of Team Rocket's grasp, the trio sent out their Arbok and Weezing to battle Gengar. However, they were easily defeated by Gengar's powerful Shadow Ball.

In From Ghost to Ghost, Gengar demonstrated its Confuse Ray to a group of Trainers whom Morty was teaching. During the Gym battle with Ash, Morty sent Gengar out as his last Pokémon. Like the rest of Morty's team, Gengar put its ability to turn invisible to use against Noctowl, being also able to attack it while invisible to keep it from using Foresight. Eventually, Ash was able to come up with a plan and had Noctowl use Confusion everywhere, forcing Gengar to turn visible. This allowed Noctowl to use Foresight on it and then defeat it with Tackle, earning Ash the Fog Badge.

Gengar reappeared in a flashback in All That Glitters!, when Ash was recalling the time he received the first four badges of Johto.

In For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!, Morty instructed Gengar to find the stolen Crystal Bells. When Ecruteak City was under attack by angry Bug-type Pokémon and Gligar, Morty had Gengar use Confuse Ray on a group of Parasect.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

Gengar reappeared in a flashback in Bagged Then Tagged!, where it was seen alongside Whitney's Miltank.

Personality and characteristics

Gengar is usually outside its Poké Ball and hiding in the shadows, though it appears when needed. It has mischievous nature and enjoys pulling pranks on people, especially those who enter the Burned Tower. However, Gengar has been helpful, especially with cases involving Pokémon or items stolen by Team Rocket. It has the ability to become invisible and reappear before its opponent notices. However, Ash overcame this by having his Noctowl use Confusion on the whole gym.
