Molayne (Japanese: マーレイン Mullein) is a non-player character introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. He is a Pokémon Trainer who specializes in Steel-type Pokémon. Sophocles affectionately refers to him as Big Mo (Japanese: マーさん Mul-san). He also becomes a member of the Alola Elite Four in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

In the games

Molayne is a former Trial Captain, runs the Hokulani Observatory, and also manages the PC box system in Alola. He is a friend of Professor Kukui, the two having taken their island challenge around the same time. He will give the player a Steelium Z afterSM/beforeUSUM taking on Sophocles's trial. After the player has cleared the trial, Molayne also asks the player to deliver Kukui the mask he accidentally left behind.

In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Molayne is one of the many Trainers who challenge the player for the title of Pokémon Champion. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Molayne instead becomes a member of Alola's newly founded Elite Four by Professor Kukui's request, replacing Hala from Sun and Moon.

Unlike most other characters, Molayne is aware of Kukui's secret identity as the Battle Royal master "Masked Royal", even sometimes referring to Kukui by this name.

Pokémon

Molayne's Pokémon are kept in Ultra Balls.

Pokémon Sun and Moon

Mount Hokulani
"You're still as fired up as ever, eh, 'Royal'?"
"But I was the captain once, my masked friend."
"It's <player>, right? Thanks for coming all the way up Hokulani to visit us. But our Captain Sophocles is a busy young man. Always calculating comets' paths or working on that Festival Plaza thing of his..."
"So I'll just determine whether you're qualified to take on the trial."
"I'll heal your team first, of course."
  • Before battle
"I'll gladly show you the skills of a Trainer who toughened up while adventuring alongside Kukui back in the day!"
  • Upon being defeated
"You're with Kukui... Looks like he brought along a good Trainer."
  • After being defeated
"Well, well, you certainly seem qualified to take on the trial."
"That guy's as interesting as ever. My old buddy!"
"Welcome to our observatory, <player>!"
Hokulani Observatory
  • First quiz answered wrongly
"Soffy! I'll shut the system down as soon as I can, so hang in there!"
  • Second quiz answered wrongly
"Soffy! I can hear a buzz in your voice! I think I can just about shut the system down..."
  • Third quiz answered wrongly
"Stay calm, Soffy! Electric types can't be paralyzed, after all!"
  • Fourth quiz answered wrongly
"Soffy! If you get tall and skinny, people might mistake you for me! Should I start calling you Uncle Soffy? But wait... how can we be each other's uncles?!"
"Soffy!"
"Nice work, Captain! You helped <player> here through his/her trial, and your experiment was a success!"
"It seems that your Ping Totem Pokémon 2.0 uses too much electricity. If we can get a little assistance from Charjabug, we should be able to make some improvements."
"Congratulations on clearing your trial! And you, Sophocles. You did well as captain."
"Don't you worry. I'm sure that I made the right choice in naming you captain. Even if you are my cousin."
"Usually it's the island kahuna who appoints the captains. But there are some, er, unusual circumstances here on Ula'ula."
"I see... Then let me reward you!"
"This is one of the Z-Crystals that I collected long ago during my own island challenge to prove my strength and that of my Pokémon. So it seems fitting that it go from me to you. Take it, and use it well."
"And if we're done here, <player>... Could I ask you to do a favor for me? Professor Kukui forgot this."
"He said he would be going back to Malie Garden. Could you take it to him?"
  • If talked to again
"The only reason to start anything is 'cause it seems like it'll be fun. That's all you need!"
Pokémon League

First challenge

  • Before battle
"I came to check on what Kukui has built, and... the Pokémon League is fantastic! It's a place that conveys the awesomeness of Alola to the world. And in that case, I guess that what's important is what kind of Trainer the Champion is."
  • Upon being defeated
"That Kukui...he discovered a great Trainer."
  • After being defeated
"Just as I'd expect from an acquaintance of Kukui's! I too am proud that you are the strongest Pokémon Trainer in Alola! I'll try to come hang out again. Pokémon battles with you are more fun than any game!"

Subsequent challenges

  • Before battle
"I gave the captain position to my cousin Sophocles, but I'm confident in my ability. My strength is like that of a supernova!"
  • Upon being defeated
"That Kukui...he discovered a great Trainer."
  • After being defeated
"Just as I'd expect from the Champion! In every situation, you pick the best moves and items. So I too have to rack my brain in the battle... At some point I want to have a battle with Sophocles and me as a duo versus you and Kukui for all the marbles. Or I guess a Battle Royal?"

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Mount Hokulani
"You're still as fired up as ever, eh, "Royal"?"
"But I was the captain once, my masked friend."
"It's <player>, right? Thanks for coming all the way up Hokulani to visit us. Our Captain Sophocles is a rather busy young man, I'm afraid. Always calculating comets' paths or updating that Festival Plaza thing of his... If you want to be introduced to the Masked Royal, though... Well, that's something I could definitely help you with right here and now."
"That guy's as interesting as ever. My old buddy!"
"Here's a little something to remember our meeting by, <player>!"
"Behold!"
"Cutting sharpness! Unyielding power! Yes, this move has them both! And it is what you need to know to draw forth the Steel-type Z-Power. I gathered these Z-Crystals when I was on my own island challenge back in my own day, adventuring with Kukui and my Pokémon in search of strength. You should go ahead and use it now. Now go on inside and tour our observatory as you like! And if you're ready for the real trial, Captain Sophocles can be found in the head's office!"
Hokulani Observatory
"Hokulani Observatory can view distant planets and galaxies. With the help of Pokémon like Togedemaru and Charjabug, of course!"
"I guess it's time to feed you guys!"
Mount Hokulani
"There you are! The Charjabug are all fed and happy!"
"Hm? Let's see... I'm only counting six! They're not all here yet."
"I'm sorry, <player>, but do you think you could go find the remaining Charjabug? We're only missing three. They should still be eating in that empty lot by the bus station."
  • If talked to again when the player found none or one Charjabug
"You only have three Charjabug left, <player>! They should still be eating in the area in front of the bus stop. If you could find them, that would be great!"
  • If talked to again when the player found two Charjabug
"You only have one Charjabug left, <player>! It should still be eating in the area in front of the bus stop. If you could find it, that would be great!"
  • After finding two Charjabug and searched the empty spot
"How's it going, <player>? Didja find all those Charjabug?"
"Oh, seems like Sevenjabug is missing... It always wanders off to strange places. Hm? Oh, we call the nine Charjabug by their nicknames! Onejabug all the way to Ninejabug."
  • If talked to again when the player found two Charjabug and searched the empty spot
"Only Sevenjabug is missing. It always wanders off to strange places."
  • After the player found Sevenjabug
"Oh, Sevenjabug, there you are! Thanks for the help in finding it, <player>! Now, we should get back to Sophocles. No doubt he's been craning his neck like an Exeggutor waiting for us!"
Hokulani Observatory
"Onejabug, Twojabug, and Threejabug are all on board the Roller... Yes! We should be ready for them to lend us their electricity, eh, Soffy?"
"Just as an example, this is what happens when you rotate the panels."
  • If talked to again
"Sophocles's trial will tickle your brain, I promise you that!"
  • After defeating Elekid
"Ah, of course. Elekid love electricity, too. It must have been tempted out by the Pinger."
"We didn't call the Pokémon we wanted, but it seems like the Pinger works just fine. So, what now, Soffy?"
  • After defeating Electabuzz
"Hm... Electabuzz. It seems like the more power we pump into the Pinger, the bigger Pokémon it attracts. This is amazing, Soffy!"
"If that's the case, let's give it some more power! That'll definitely summon the Totem Pokémon!"
  • After solving the third puzzle
"Togedemaru's Ability is Lightning Rod. It can attract electricity to itself. But...the current is too strong! There's no way Togedemaru's electric sacs can handle all of it!"
  • After defeating Totem Togedemaru
"I'm curious, though. What is that aura that the Totem Pokémon surround themselves with?"
"You've got that right, Soffy. Finding things that you notice, even little things, and improving on them... That's how science works. Come to think of it, that's how Pokémon battles work, too!"
"Come on, Soffy—you still need to show him/her the proper Z-pose to use it!"
"Congratulations on clearing your trial! And Sophocles did well as captain, too."
"Don't you worry. I'm sure that I made the right choice in naming you captain. Even if you are my cousin."
"Usually it's the island kahuna who appoints the captains. But there are some, er, unusual circumstances here on Ula'ula."
"Maybe you should invite him/her to check out the Battle Agency in that case!"
"You kids have a good time!"
"Well, if you're done here, <player>... could I ask you to do a favor for me? My pal Kukui seems to have forgotten this."
"He said he'd be going back to Malie Garden, didn't he? Sorry to ask, but take it to him, would you?"
  • During Mina's trial
"Well, Soffy, I guess this will be good-bye for a little while..."
"Now, Soffy... When you're saying good-bye to someone who is important to you, you gotta show them one last smile! That's what that old friend of mine always said, anyway, back when we did our island challenge."
"Hey, <player>! Thanks again for doing that favor for me before. It sure seems like you've gotten to see some interesting things on your island challenge. It's been quite the experience for you!"
"I know! Why don't you two have a little battle now, while I can still watch?US/It's time for the next generation to start taking their place among the stars, I guess. So, Soffy... Hokulani Observatory is all yours now.UM"
"You both did very well! I'm looking forward to seeing how far you both will make it in the future. Soffy... The observatory is all yours now."US
Pokémon League
  • Upon entering the Metal Chamber
"Hey!"
First battle
  • Before battle
"Kukui asked me to, so I decided to be in the Elite Four. I'm looking forward to battling against you and Sophocles in the Pokémon League."
  • Upon being defeated
"That Kukui... He certainly found an interesting Trainer for me to face!"
  • After being defeated
"Kukui made Trainers who he thought were strong into members of the Elite Four, but he didn't choose any challengers. He's waiting for a fresh breeze to blow through Alola."

  • If battled second
"In the battle with you, I realized the areas in which Sophocles needs to improve."
  • If battled third
"Battling with you is interesting! I think you outdo even Kukui. You're second to none!"
  • If battled last
"Just what I'd expect of a Pokémon Trainer discovered by the Masked Royal."

Molayne in the anime

Molayne debuted in a picture in Love at First Twirl!, where he was introduced as Sophocles's cousin and a close friend of Professor Kukui during Sophocles's class presentation.

Molayne made his physical debut in Showering the World with Love!, where he showed Ash and his classmates around the Hokulani Observatory and, by Kukui's request, also taught them about the life cycle of Minior.

Molayne reappeared in Turning the Other Mask!, where he helped Kukui keep his Masked Royal identity a secret from Ash and Professor Burnet during a handshake event. During the event, Molayne attempted to take Kukui's place as the Masked Royal, but was tied up by James and Faba, who had mistaken Molayne for an imposter. Molayne in Pokémon Adventures

Molayne debuts in the Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc. He was first seen reporting to Kiawe about managing to rescue innocent civilians that were in danger from a group of Ultra Beasts that had escaped from Po Town to wreak havoc on Ula'ula Island. Molayne and Sophocles managed to evacuate the people to Hokulani Observatory, but with the beasts still on the loose, they worried that it may eventually get attacked as well. To circumvent this problem, Sophocles decided to use an invention designed to call Totem Pokémon in order to guide the beasts away from the observatory.

Later, Molayne, Professor Kukui, Sophocles, Acerola, and Gladion fought off a Celesteela and Guzzlord at Route 10 to prevent them from reaching Hokulani Observatory. Gladion easily defeated Celesteela and later defeated Guzzlord to prevent it from hurting Lillie. To everyone's shock, Gladion and Lillie revealed that they were siblings and the children of Lusamine, the president of the Aether Foundation. After Lillie presented a Sun Flute she took from Aether Paradise when she ran away months ago, Gladion decided that they should head towards the altar.
