Misty: Difference between revisions

Misty (Japanese: カスミ Kasumi) is a Gym Leader of Cerulean City's Gym, known officially as the Cerulean Gym. She hands out the Cascade Badge to Trainers who defeat her. She specializes in Template:Type2 Pokémon. In Japanese she is voiced by 飯塚雅弓 Mayumi Iizuka. In English she is voiced by Rachael Lillis (Template:4Kids dub), and Michele Knotz (TPCi dub). Misty is voiced by Márcia Regina in the Brazilian dub, Míriam Valencia in the Iberian Spanish dub, and Xóchitl Ugarte in the Latin American Spanish dub.

Misty is the youngest of four sisters who live in the Cerulean Gym. Fed up with her more glamorous older sisters, Misty left the gym with the goal of becoming the world's greatest Water Pokémon Trainer. She met Ash when she "caught" him with her fishing line in a river between Pallet Town and Viridian City. She traveled around with Ash, Brock, and Tracey through the Kanto region, Orange Islands, and Johto region.

Misty can be sweet and optimistic at times, but she is best known for how easily she can be angered or frustrated, and how loud and violent she can become in response. She is very extreme in most of her moods, and can switch between them quickly. Her goals are not as clear as those of the other main characters, since though her main interest is training Water-type Pokémon, there's many things she loves to do and she is very confident in her abilities in all aspects of life. Fishing is one of her hobbies, however, and she has a special lure which she designed to look like herself and gave to Ash as a gift. The one Pokémon type that Misty cannot stand are Template:Type2s; she tends to freak out in most cases whenever she encounters a Bug-type, which was first demonstrated when she refused to befriend Ash's Caterpie.

Her purpose was ostensibly to get Ash to replace her bicycle, which he had accidentally destroyed when they first met. However, Misty often seemed to have forgotten about the bicycle, indicating that her real reason for following along was that she simply wanted to remain with her friends. In the Orange Islands, evidence that she has Template:S surfaced as well.

After Ash competed in the Johto League Silver Conference, however, her bicycle is repaired and returned to her by the Viridian City Nurse Joy. Misty was shown to be sad that she no longer had the convenient excuse to travel with Ash. In addition, her sisters Daisy, Lily, and Violet, called Misty at this time to tell her they were going on a world tour, and needed her to return to Cerulean and watch the Gym in their absence. Misty wanted to stay with Ash, but felt it was her responsibility to take over the Gym, which would be shut down if left unattended.

Meanwhile, even after her sisters returned, Misty remains the sole Cerulean Gym Leader, as they have never been reliable in that role. Only Daisy (the eldest sister, and the one Misty is on the best terms with) seems to spend any significant amount of time at the Gym now that Misty has returned.

While working in the gym, Misty sometimes receives help from Tracey when he is either visiting or running an errand for Professor Oak.

Misty leaving the main cast caused a great amount of controversy among the fanbase with many extremely upset with her leaving. This led to many of Misty's fans leaving the fandom and a lot of hate being directed towards May in her early years. Misty naturally comes up as a candidate whenever there is speculation on the main characters of a future saga, with opinions on whether she will ever return divided. Canonically, Misty will have to find a good replacement before she can leave the Gym for an extended period of time.

Art of Misty from Pokémon Red and Blue Versions

Misty's title is "The Tomboyish Mermaid." Her strategy is an all-out attack with Water-type Pokémon.

Misty is constantly looking for ways to improve her technique. A swimmer herself, she trains at the Seafoam Islands. As Misty becomes a stronger Trainer, she becomes the only one in her town who can defeat the Trainers at Cerulean's cape.

It is said that Misty has high hopes for the north cape, a romantic date spot. In later years, she is seen there with an unidentified boyfriend. She dislikes pests who bother her when she's on a date.

Misty worships Lorelei of the Elite Four. It's Misty's dream to travel one day. She wishes to meet many strong Trainers, such as Trainer Gold/Kris from Johto who defeats her in battle.

In addition to the Cascade Badge, Misty gives out TM11 (BubbleBeam), in Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, she gives out TM03 (Water Pulse).

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, she doesn't give out a TM.

Misty is a Water Pokémon Gym Leader from Cerulean City. She debuts in the Red, Green & Blue chapter in Gyarados Splashes In! when Red saves her from her enraged Gyarados,which has been experimented on by Team Rocket. After they recapture the Pokémon, Red and Misty join forces to defeat Team Rocket and find the Moon Stone at Mt. Moon. During the battle, Misty is knocked out by the enemy Rhydon. (This occurs in the Raging Rhydon chapter.)

As is shown in Suddenly Starmie, she lives in a large mansion and has a horde of maids that look after her. Here she defeats Red in the Cerulean Gym and trains with him a couple of days to make them both stronger, at the end of this round she gives Red the Cascade Badge.

Later, Red wants to teach his Pokémon Surf, but the HM he tries to acquire is destroyed in a battle with a Dragonite. Misty saves Red from drowning; he, at first, mistakes her for a mermaid. As Red's one hope of teaching his Pokémon Surf has been utterly demolished, Misty trades Red her Gyarados for his Krabby. Red still has Misty's Gyarados in his party to this day.

In Johto, during the second Team Rocket crisis, Suicune chooses Misty to be its partner. She, however, is injured in the battle with the Mask of Ice, and Suicune goes on to take Crystal as its second partner for the battle's climax.

Misty seems to have a crush on Red. It is, however, considered distinct from Misty's suspected crush on Ash in the Pokémon anime, and in other manga. During the second Team Rocket crisis, Erika observes that Misty is planning on making some sort of confession of romantic feelings to Red. It is unlikely, however, that she ever managed to carry out this plan.

In the Electric Tale of Pikachu

Misty first appears riding her bicycle and finding a Pikachu in a field. During her initial meeting with its owner, she proceeds to explain how difficult it is to become a pro Pokémon Trainer and soon departs. Later, in a manner similar to the Pokémon anime, Ash runs into her again, only to take her bike to escape from a flock of Spearow and a Fearow. In the end, the bike shared the same fate as the anime counterpart.

Throughout the series, Misty and Ash travel together on occasion. At one point, Ash ends up having to battle her in the Cerulean Gym in order to win the Cascade Badge and to retrieve the hat she took off his head. When he retrieves his hat, Misty accused him of cheating and they get into an argument, causing Daisy to remark that Misty has a thing for younger men.

In Pocket Monsters

The slapstick manga, Pocket Monsters, depicts Misty differently than in other manga. Red, the protagonist of the series, is seeking a Moon Stone along with his Pikachu and his Clefairy (one that speaks human language). When they meet Misty, Clefairy notices that she is wearing a Moon Stone as a necklace. She declares that they battle her if they wish to have it. While the Clefairy is initially pumped up to battle, he quickly changes his mind when he sees that his opponent is a massive Blastoise. After a while, the battle is won when Clefairy sucks up all the water in a nearby river and releases the water onto Misty's Pokémon, sending it flying into the sky. Just when Misty is about to reward Red's group with the prize they sought, it gets stolen by someone else.

In Pokémon Zensho

When Ash arrives at the Cerulean Gym, he is given a pair of swimming trunks as that is all that is allowed inside the pool arena. Misty appears soon after, prompting a blush from him. Soon after, during the battle, he sends out his Charmander, which is afraid of going near the water since the flame on its tail might go out. His Pikachu is sent next, but having no idea of what to do around the water, it falls in. As he attempts to save his Pokémon, Ash gets a cramp and nearly drowns, but Misty manages to rescue him.

Later on, as Ash and Pikachu dry themselves off, Misty suggests that she teach them how to properly move around in the water, so they can stand a better chance next time. He trains along with Pikachu, who floats on a life saver. Misty attempts to take the device away from the mouse, only to see that it is clinging to it. Eventually, as Ash and Pikachu end up improving. As he sits around with a Seel, Misty relays a story over how a Dewgong rescued her once when a large wave swept her underwater at the beach. Due to that experience, she feels gratitude toward the Pokémon.

After Ash thwarts an attack by a Rocket Grunt, she awards him with the Cascade Badge and her Seel, telling him that she hopes to meet the Dewgong that rescued her someday.

Misty's the gym leader of Cerulean City and a real tomboy. She loves swimming and all things aquatic, so she makes a point of collecting Starmie, Staryu and other Water-type Pokémon. This is common among gym leaders: typically, the Pokémon kept by trainers tend to reflect that person's personality and preferences.

Trivia

• Only two of Misty's Pokémon are not Template:Type2: Togetic and Azurill, though the latter can Template:P2.

• Her Japanese Leader title is ハナダジムのおてんば人魚.
• Misty's Generation II depiction resembles a woman that was seen in the original Japanese trailer for Mewtwo Strikes Back.
• Misty's full name is often supposed by fans to be "Misty Waterflower", based on the title of the episode in which she is revealed as the Cerulean Gym Leader, but she is never actually referred to by that name in the anime. "Williams" is also listed as her last name on some websites. The writers of the show have confirmed that they do not know Misty's last name.
• Misty used to fear Gyarados because of a traumatic experience as a child in which she was nearly eaten by one, but she later overcame her fears and now uses a Gyarados as one of her primary Pokémon.
• Misty was the only one of Ash's friends to have a Pokémon along with its evolved form on her team at the same time
• Misty is the only one of Ash's friends to have a Psychic-type Pokémon.
• She is the only main character so far to have a genderless Pokémon.
• Misty is one of only two main characters that has no parent revealed, the other being Tracey.
• Misty had the most Pokémon traveling with her than any of the main characters prior to their premier in the anime.
• Misty's seiyū, Mayumi Iizuka, has hinted in her blog that Misty will make an appearance in the Diamond & Pearl series ^[1][2]. No such appearance has been made or confirmed yet, however. Misty's special lure made an appearance in Buizel Your Way out of This; it is unknown if this is what Iizuka meant.
• Out of the four Template:Type2 gym leaders, Misty is the only female. She also is the youngest.
• Misty was the first of Ash's friends to be shown bleeding. Ash himself was the second main character who was shown bleeding.
• Misty's Latin American Spanish dub actress, Xóchitl Ugarte, has a sister (Gaby Ugarte) who dubs another female main character of the anime.
• All of Ash's female friends have a native Korean word as their name in Korean version (dew, spring and shine respectively). Such names were trendy in late 70s, now they are rare.
• Misty is the only main anime character that is not a Pokémon to have a trophy in the Super Smash Bros. series.
• Misty is the first of Ash's friends to challenge a gym (albeit an unofficial gym), since she challenged and won against the unofficial Johto Water gym leader in Just Add Water.
• Misty has not yet been seen to own a Generation IV Pokémon.
• Misty is the only character in the Pokémon franchise to have a recurring Pokémon in all the franchise media, the Pokémon being Starmie.
• Misty was the first main character to leave her Pokémon at home not via PC. In The Misty Mermaid, she left her Horsea and Starmie at the Cerulean Gym. Ever since, Ash has left his Pokémon at Oak's after travelling through Johto and Hoenn, as have Brock and May on their stops home.
• Recently, former director and storyboard artist of the Pokémon anime, Masamitsu Hidaka, stated in an interview that Misty will not return as a main character in future seasons, but she will continue to make cameo appearances from time to time like she has in the past. His words caused some controversy among fans. However, this was only stated by Hidaka and not by other staff members.
