Misty (Japanese: カスミ Kasumi) is a Gym Leader of Cerulean City's Gym, known officially as the Cerulean Gym.  She hands out the Cascade Badge to Trainers who defeat her. She specializes in Water-type Pokémon. In Japanese she is voiced by 飯塚雅弓 Mayumi Iizuka. In English she is voiced by Rachael Lillis (4Kids dub), and Michelle Knotz (Pokémon USA/TAJ Productions dub). Misty is voiced by Márcia Regina in the Brazilian dub, Míriam Valencia in the Spanish dub, and Xóchitl Ugarte in the Latin American Spanish dub.
In the anime
Misty is the youngest of four sisters who live in the Cerulean Gym. Fed up with her more glamourous older sisters, Misty left the gym with the goal of becoming the world's greatest Water Pokémon Trainer. She met Ash when she "caught" him with her fishing line in a river between Pallet Town and Viridian City. She travelled around with Ash, Brock, and Tracey through the Kanto region, Orange Islands, and Johto region.
Misty can be sweet and optimistic at times, but she is best known for how easily she can be angered or frustrated, and how loud and violent she can become in response. She is very extreme in most of her moods, and can switch between them quickly. Her goals are not as clear as those of the other main characters, since though her main interest is training Water-type Pokémon, there's many things she loves to do and she is very confident in her abilities in all aspects of life.  Fishing is one of her hobbies, however, and she has a special lure which she designed to look like herself and gave to Ash as a gift.
Her purpose was ostensibly to get Ash to replace her bicycle, which he had accidentally destroyed when they first met. However, Misty often seemed to have forgotten about the bicycle, indicating that her real reason for following along was that she simply wanted to remain with her friends. In the Orange Islands, evidence that she has romantic feelings for Ash surfaced as well.

After Ash competed in the Johto League Silver Conference, however, her bicycle is repaired and returned to her by the Viridian City Nurse Joy. Misty was shown to be sad that she no longer had the convenient excuse to travel with Ash. In addition, her sisters Daisy, Lily, and Violet, called Misty at this time to tell her they were going on a world tour, and needed her to return to Cerulean and watch the Gym in their absence. Misty wanted to stay with Ash, but felt it was her responsibility to take over the Gym, which would be shut down if left unattended.
Meanwhile, even after her sisters returned, Misty remains the sole Cerulean Gym Leader, as they have never been reliable in that role. Only Daisy (the eldest sister, and the one Misty is on the best terms with) seems to spend any significant amount of time at the Gym now that Misty has returned.
Misty leaving the main cast caused a great amount of controversy among the fanbase with many extremely upset with her leaving.  This led to many of Misty's fans leaving the fandom and a lot of hate being directed towards May in her early years.  Misty naturally comes up as a candidate whenever there is speculation on the main characters of a future saga, with opinions on whether she will ever return divided. Canonically, Misty will have to find a good replacement before she can leave the Gym for an extended period of time.
While working in the gym, Misty sometimes receives help from Tracey when he is either visiting or running an errand for Professor Oak.
Pokémon
This is a listing of Misty's Pokémon as of the most recent Japanese episode. As she is currently residing in the Cerulean Gym, all of her Pokémon are there and none are listed as "on hand".

Misty's title is "The Tomboyish Mermaid." Her strategy is an all-out attack with Water-type Pokémon.

Misty is constantly looking for ways to improve her technique. A swimmer herself, she trains at the Seafoam Islands. As Misty becomes a stronger Trainer, she becomes the only one in her town who can defeat the Trainers at Cerulean's cape.
Three years later, in , Misty remains the Gym Leader of the Cerulean Gym, which can be challenged once the Team Rocket Grunt who stole the Machine Part from the Kanto Power Plant is encountered at the Gym. Initially, she cannot be found in the Gym. Instead, she can be seen at Cerulean Cape on a date with her boyfriend. When the player arrives, her boyfriend is scared away, prompting her to grow angry with the player and refer to them as a pest. Upon noticing their eight Johto Badges, however, she accepts the player's challenge and returns to the Gym. While she doesn't give out a TM in Gold, Silver, and Crystal, she gives out TM03 (Water Pulse) in HeartGold and SoulSilver.

It is said that Misty has high hopes for the north cape, a romantic date spot. In later years, she is seen there with an unidentified boyfriend. She dislikes pests who bother her when she's on a date.
In HeartGold and SoulSilver, once all 16 Badges have been obtained and Suicune has been captured or defeated, Misty can be found on Route 25 on any day between 4 PM and 6 PM. If spoken to, she will offer her Pokégear number to the player. If she is called on Wednesday mornings, she will be up for a rematch at the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City. After her Pokégear number has been obtained, she will also appear on Route 25 every day between 2 PM and 4 PM. Upon speaking to her, the player can have a photograph taken with her if the first Pokémon in their party is a Water-type.

Misty worships Lorelei of the Elite Four. It's Misty's dream to travel one day. She wishes to meet many strong Trainers, such as Trainer Gold/Kris from Johto who defeats her in battle.
In , Misty appears alongside the other Gym Leaders of Kanto as an opponent in the Kanto Leaders Tournament at the Pokémon World Tournament. She also participates alongside the Gym Leaders of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova in the World Leaders Tournament, and other Water-type experts in the Water Type Expert Tournament.

In addition to the Cascade Badge, Misty gives out 11, in Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, she gives out 03.
In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Pokémon Crystal, she doesn't give out a TM.

History
Red, Green & Blue
Misty debuts in Gyarados Splashes In!, where Red saves her from her enraged Misty, which has been experimented on by Team Rocket. After they recapture the Pokémon, Red and Misty join forces to defeat Team Rocket and find the Moon Stone at Mt. Moon. During the battle, Misty is knocked out by a Team Rocket Grunt's Rhydon.

As is shown in Suddenly Starmie, she lives in a large mansion and has a horde of maids that look after her. Here she defeats Red in the Cerulean Gym and trains with him for a couple of days to make them both stronger. At the end of this chapter, she gives Red the Cascade.

Later, Red wants to teach his Pokémon Surf, but the HM he tries to acquire is destroyed in a battle with a wild Dragonite. Misty saves Red from drowning; he at first, mistakes her for a mermaid. As Red's one hope of teaching his Pokémon Surf has been utterly demolished, Misty trades Red her Gyarados for his Krabby. They have each other's Pokémon in their respective parties to this day.

Yellow
She is seen talking with Professor Oak about Red's disappearance and worries about him, especially after hearing that Oak gave Red's Pokédex and Pika to Yellow, who she considered a random stranger. She was then seen teaming up with the other 'good' Gym Leaders of Kanto to thwart Super Nerd Miles, then possessed by Agatha's Gastly and attempting to retrieve Pika. After the event, she meets Yellow for the first time and gives her an Omanyte. She was also seen being stalled by Agatha, who forced Cerulean under attack by a group of Gastly and Haunter. They finally retrieve what they were after all along, her Gym Badge. Misty had her Starmie go to Cerise Island and give the message to the others.

Gold, Silver & Crystal
Unlike in the anime, Misty has changed her hairstyle later on to match the one worn by her in Gold and Silver. During the second Team Rocket crisis, Legendary beasts (Adventures) lured Misty into a battle underneath Tohjo Falls and later offered to be her partner. The recruitment somehow gave her strength and confidence, as she was able to easily defeat Whitney in her exhibition game at the Indigo Plateau. However, she later becomes injured in the battle with the Masked Man, and Suicune goes on to take Crystal as its second partner for the battle's climax.

In The Last Battle XIV, Misty decides to report to Erika via her Pokégear. Since Erika lent her Pokégear earlier to Red, Red ends up being the one who receives the call. Misty's feelings for Red couple with Yellow noticing that Red is talking to Misty creates an awkward tension in the air. Green, fully aware of the tension between them, smugly declares that the three should simply all live together, much to their embarrassment.

Pokémon Pocket Monsters
Red meets Misty while seeking a Moon Stone along with his Pikachu and his Clefairy. During the meeting, Clefairy notices that she is wearing a Moon Stone as a necklace. She declares that they battle her if they wish to have it. While the Clefairy is initially pumped up to battle, he quickly changes his mind when he sees that his opponent is a massive Blastoise. After a while, the battle is won when Clefairy sucks up all the water in a nearby river and releases the water onto Misty's Pokémon, sending it flying into the sky. Just when Misty is about to reward Red's group with the prize they sought, it gets stolen by someone else.

As is shown in Suddenly Starmie she lives in a large mansion and is looked after by a horde of maids. Here she defeats Red in the Cerulean Gym and trains with him a couple of days to make them both stronger, at the end of this round she gives Red the Cascade Badge.
She is seen again when Red participates in the No. 1 Pokémon contest acting as a judge and when he went to a swimming pool.

Later, Red wants to teach his Pokémon Surf, but the HM he tries to acquire is destroyed, so Misty trades Red her Gyarados for his Krabby. Red still has Misty's Gyarados in his party to this day. Misty seems to have a crush on Red, and this is distinct from Misty's suspected crush on Ash in the Pokémon anime, and in other manga.
Misty lent him her Misty while in the Pokémon League as Red needed extra support to defeat Green.

In Johto, during the second Team Rocket crisis, Suicune chooses Misty to be its partner.
Misty reappears in a cameo in Clefairy, Form Teacher Of Class 1P!!, where she is seen wearing her outfit from FireRed and LeafGreen.

Pokémon Zensho
When Satoshi arrives at the Cerulean Gym in PZ03, he is given a pair of swimming trunks as that is all that is allowed inside the pool arena. Misty appears soon after, prompting a blush from him. Soon after, during the battle, he sends out his Satoshi, which is afraid of going near the water since the flame on its tail might go out. His Pikachu is sent next, but having no idea of what to do around the water, it falls in. As he attempts to save his Pokémon, Satoshi gets a cramp and nearly drowns, but Misty manages to rescue him.

Later on, as Satoshi and Pikachu dry themselves off, Misty suggests that she teach them how to properly move around in the water, so they can stand a better chance next time. He trains along with Pikachu, who floats on a lifesaver. Misty attempts to take the device away from the mouse, only to see that it is clinging to it. Eventually, Satoshi and Pikachu end up improving. As Satoshi sits around with a Seel, Misty relays a story over how a Dewgong rescued her once when a large wave swept her underwater at the beach. Due to that experience, she feels gratitude toward the Pokémon.

After Satoshi thwarts an attack by a Team Rocket Grunt, she awards him with the Cascade and her Seel, telling him that she hopes to meet the Dewgong that rescued her someday.

In the Electric Tale of Pikachu
None of the Gym Pokémon's moves are known.}}
Misty first appears riding her bicycle and finding a Pikachu in a field. During her initial meeting with its owner, she proceeds to explain how difficult it is to become a pro Pokémon Trainer and soon departs. Later, in a manner similar to the Pokémon anime, Ash runs into her again, only to take her bike to escape from a flock of Spearow and a Fearow. In the end, the bike shared the same fate as the anime counterpart.

Throughout the series, Misty and Ash travel together on occasion. At one point, Ash ends up having to battle her in the Cerulean Gym in order to win the Cascade Badge and to retrieve the hat she took off his head.

In the slapstick manga, Pocket Monsters (manga), depicts Misty differently than in other manga. Red, the protagonist of the series, is seeking a Moon Stone along with his Pikachu and his Clefairy (one that speaks human language). When they meet Misty, Clefairy notices that she is wearing a Moon Stone as a necklace. She declares that they battle her if they wish to have it. While the Clefairy is initially pumped up to battle, he quickly changes his mind when he sees that his opponent is a massive Blastoise. After a while, the battle is won when Clefairy sucks up all the water in a nearby river and releases the water onto Misty's Pokemon, sending it flying into the sky. Just when Misty is about to reward Red's group with the prize they sought, it gets stolen by someone else.

Misty first appeared in the Pokémon Trading Card Game with the release of the Japanese Hanada City Gym deck on April 26, 1998. The deck is built around Misty and Owner's Pokémon, including the eponymous Gym Heroes, Gym Heroes, Gym Heroes, and Gym Challenge Trainer cards. The Leaders' Stadium expansion released shortly afterwards would add more of Misty's Pokémon and another Trainer card, Gym Challenge. These cards would see international release in the Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge expansions, with the former including a Misty Theme Deck.

The Riding on Lapras CD released August 21, 1999 included a special promo card of CD, as Misty's voice actor performed the song. The Sun & Moon Series added another Supporter card, Unified Minds, in the international Unified Minds and Japanese Miracle Twin expansions. Another Japanese deck was then built around Misty: the Trainer Battle Decks. While the Pokémon within lacked her name from their titles, Misty was named in two new cards, Hidden Fates and Hidden Fates. These cards saw international release in the Hidden Fates expansion. Misty's the gym leader of Cerulean City and a real tomboy. She loves swimming and all things aquatic, so she makes a point of collecting Starmie, Staryu and other Water-type Pokémon. This is common among gym leaders: typically, the Pokémon kept by trainers tend to reflect that person's personality and preferences.

Misty (Japanese: カスミ Kasumi) is the Gym Leader of Cerulean City's Gym, known officially as the Cerulean Gym. She gives the Cascade Badge to Trainers who defeat her in battle. She specializes in Water-type Pokémon.

In the core series games

Misty appears in Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen and Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! as the Gym Leader of the Cerulean Gym, which is the second Gym that the player challenges on their journey. Her strategy is an all-out attack with Water-type Pokémon, and she is constantly looking for ways to improve her technique. A swimmer herself, she trains at the Seafoam Islands. She admires Lorelei of the Elite Four. It is said that she has high hopes for Cerulean Cape, a romantic date spot. She also expresses a desire to travel one day once she has become stronger. In addition to the Cascade Badge, Misty gives out TM11 (BubbleBeam) in Red, Blue, and Yellow, TM03 (Water Pulse) in FireRed and LeafGreen, and TM29 (Scald) in Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.

In Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Misty appears in Vermilion City after the player has defeated Lt. Surge, offering to show them the way to the Diglett's Cave entrance on Route 11. She also reveals that she sometimes visits Vermilion to swim in the sea.

Three years later, in Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, Misty remains the Gym Leader of the Cerulean Gym, which can be challenged once the Team Rocket Grunt who stole the Machine Part from the Kanto Power Plant is encountered at the Gym.

In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Misty appears alongside the other Gym Leaders of Kanto as an opponent in the Kanto Leaders Tournament at the Pokémon World Tournament. She also participates alongside the Gym Leaders of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova in the World Leaders Tournament, and other Water-type experts in the Water Type Expert Tournament.

Misty in the anime
Main article: Misty (anime)

Misty is a friend and former traveling partner of the anime's main character, Ash Ketchum. After he stole her bike and proceeded to accidentally destroy it in Pokémon - I Choose You!, Misty followed him around the Kanto region, the Orange Islands, and the Johto region, using the time she spent with him to further her goal of becoming the greatest Water Pokémon Master.

At the end of the original series, Misty's bike was returned and repaired by the Nurse Joy of Viridian City, and as her sisters were leaving on a world tour, Misty stayed at the Cerulean Gym as its leader in order to keep it open.

Despite this, she still visits Ash from time to time, meeting up with him during the Mirage Kingdom and Battle Frontier arcs of Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire. More recently, she reappeared in Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon for two small arcs set in Kanto and Alola, respectively. In Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Misty was inspired to travel again after seeing the Masters Eight Tournament and reunited with Ash to travel with him for a while, before eventually returning to the Gym.

Misty appeared briefly in File 2: Cubone. She was shown being challenged to a Gym battle by Red, who later defeated her off-screen, earning the young Pokémon Trainer the Cascade Badge.

History

Red, Green & Blue arc

Misty debuts in Gyarados Splashes In!, where Red saves her from her enraged Gyarados, which has been experimented on by Team Rocket.

At the end of this chapter, she gives Red the Cascade Badge.

Misty dressed up

Later, Red wants to teach his Pokémon Surf, but the HM he tries to acquire is destroyed in a battle with a wild Dragonite. Misty saves Red from drowning; he at first, mistakes her for a mermaid. As Red's one hope of teaching his Pokémon Surf has been utterly demolished, Misty trades Red her Gyarados for his Krabby. They have each other's Pokémon in their respective parties to this day.

Yellow arc

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

Unlike in the anime, Misty has changed her hairstyle later on to match the one worn by her in Pokémon Gold and Silver. During the second Team Rocket crisis, Suicune lured Misty into a battle underneath Tohjo Falls and later offered to be her partner. The recruitment somehow gave her strength and confidence, as she was able to easily defeat Whitney in her exhibition match at the Indigo Plateau.

When Satoshi arrives at the Cerulean Gym in PZ03, he is given a pair of swimming trunks as that is all that is allowed inside the pool arena. Misty appears soon after, prompting a blush from him. Soon after, during the battle, he sends out his Charmander, which is afraid of going near the water since the flame on its tail might go out.

After Satoshi thwarts an attack by a Team Rocket Grunt, she awards him with the Cascade Badge and her Seel, telling him that she hopes to meet the Dewgong that rescued her someday.

Cards

For the full list of cards featuring Misty or her Pokémon, see Category:Misty (TCG)

Hanada City Gym deck box

Misty first appeared in the Pokémon Trading Card Game with the release of the Japanese Hanada City Gym deck on April 26, 1998. The deck is built around Misty and her Pokémon, including the eponymous Misty, Misty's Wrath, Misty's Duel, and Misty's Tears Trainer cards. The Leaders' Stadium expansion released shortly afterwards would add more of Misty's Pokémon and another Trainer card, Misty's Wish. These cards would see international release in the Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge expansions, with the former including a Misty Theme Deck.

The Riding on Lapras CD released August 21, 1999 included a special promo card of Misty's Treatment, as Misty's voice actor performed the song. Misty would next be featured in the TCG with two more of her Pokémon being released in the Pokémon VS expansion. The Theater Limited VS Pack including Misty's Politoed and Misty's Corsola would be Misty's last appearance in the TCG for 13 years.

Misty's Determination Full Art print

Misty would return to the TCG during the XY Series in the BREAKpoint expansion (the Golduck BREAK + Palkia-EX Combo Deck in Japan) in a cameo in Lapras's artwork and the Misty's Determination Supporter card. A print of Gym Badge featuring Misty and the Cascade Badge would also be a prize at official tournaments near the end of the XY Series.

The Sun & Moon Series added another Supporter card, Misty's Favor, in the international Unified Minds and Japanese Miracle Twin expansions. Another Japanese deck was then built around Misty: the Misty of Cerulean City Gym Trainer Battle Deck. While the Pokémon within lacked her name from their titles, Misty was named in two new cards, Misty's Water Command and Misty's Cerulean City Gym. These cards saw international release in the Hidden Fates expansion. At the end of the Series, Misty was featured alongside Lorelei in the TAG TEAM Supporter card Misty & Lorelei in the Cosmic Eclipse and Tag All Stars expansions.

Misty's next appearance was in the artwork for Astral Radiance StarmieV.

Merchandise

Contents of the Misty of Cerulean City Gym Trainer Battle Deck

The Hanada City Gym and Misty Theme Decks prominently featured her on the box.

In Japan, a set of card sleeves featuring Misty and her Psyduck were released alongside the special Pokémon 20th Anniversary set, the Expansion Pack 20th Anniversary.

Like the first deck, the Misty of Cerulean City Gym Trainer Battle Deck features Misty on the box, as well as the card sleeves, deckbox, coin, and playmat. A rubber playmat sold separately also uses this artwork, along with her Starmie.

A set of card sleeves featuring Misty, her Starmie, and her Politoed was available in Japan the same day as the Battle Region subset.

In the TFG

Misty appears as a rare Trainer figure in the launch set, Next Quest, of the Pokémon Trading Figure Game.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Misty appears as a random trophy, wearing her outfit from the anime.

Trophy information

Misty's the gym leader of Cerulean City and a real tomboy. She loves swimming and all things aquatic, so she makes a point of collecting Starmie, Staryu, and other Water-type Pokémon. This is common among gym leaders: typically, the Pokémon kept by Trainers tend to reflect that person's personality and preferences.

Trivia

 • Misty's Japanese Leader title is おてんば人魚 The Tomboyish Mermaid.
 • In Pokémon Yellow, Misty calls Red a "sweetie" right before the battle, in the sentence "Are you ready, sweetie?". In the original Japanese version, she uses her anime counterpart's catchphrase instead (いくわよ!マーイステディ! Go! My Steady!).
 • Misty slightly resembles Arle Nadja from the Puyo Puyo franchise.
 • Misty appeared in concept art included in the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Essential Artbook, implying she was considered to appear in the game. The art depicted her on a floating house with two canoes modeled after Huntail.
