Misdreavus (Japanese: ムウマ Muma) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Mismagius when exposed to a Dusk Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Misdreavus is a dark bluish-green ghost-like Pokémon. It has a red "necklace" which is uses to absorb fear as nourishment and flowing hair which it can manipulate. Misdreavus's eyes are yellow with red irises.

Special abilities

Misdreavus can use various Ghost, Dark, Psychic, and Electrical attacks.

Misdreavus is the only known Pokémon that learns Pain Split by level-up.

Behavior

As Template:Type2 Pokémon, Misdreavus have a habit of being pranksters. Misdreavus tend to yank at people's hair or scream at them from behind.

Habitat

Misdreavus live in caves, dark forests and run-down buildings.

Diet

Misdreavus is a phobovore: it eats fear that it collects in its "necklace". However, it can also eat normal food.

Little Miss is a Misdreavus that first appeared under the ownership of Marina during The Legend of Thunder! special.

In Entei at Your Own Risk, Nelson wanted to use his Misdreavus to battle and capture an Entei.

A group of wild Misdreavus were causing a ruckus in at the Silver Conference Hotel in Johto Photo Finish. Ash and his friends found that one of them was trapped under a fallen tree.

Katie battled Ash with a Misdreavus during the Hoenn League in Shocks and Bonds. Although Ash's Glalie defeated it, the Screech Pokémon used Destiny Bond, which caused Glalie to get knocked out.

Minor appearances

Zoey, Dawn's rival, has a Misdreavus that she uses in contests.

Ash and Angie encountered a Misdreavus in the forest during Ghoul Daze!. It scared them off with Screech.

A Misdreavus appeared in Try for the Family Stone!.

Trivia

• Misdreavus's name can be said two ways. When 4Kids was dubbing, it was said mis-dre-vis. When TPCi began dubbing, it is said mis-dree-vus.
• Misdreavus was the first pure Template:Type2 Pokémon to be introduced. It's also the only Template:Type2 Pokémon to be introduced in Generation II.
• Misdreavus's first two anime appearances both involved legendary beasts (Raikou and Entei).
• Despite it being the Screech Pokémon, it can only learn Screech as an egg move.
• In terms of Pokédex info, both Shuppet and Misdreavus are similar in that they feed off of human feelings, respectively envy and fear.

Origin

It is likely that Misdreavus was based on a banshee, a female spirit from Gaelic folklore who was known for its unearthly wailing and screaming.

It is also possible that Misdreavus is based on langsuir, a type of vampire in Malaysian mythology known to appear as a flying decapitated female head.

Name origin

Misdreavus's name is a misspelling of mischievous. It is also possible that reave, or rob, was incorporated into the name, while another possibility is the addition of dread was incorporated into the name, or the word "dreary". Its name can relate to "miscreant", due to the way it always scares people.

Its Japanese name, Muma, is probably a corruption of 夢魔 muma, nightmare, or a demon in a dream.
