Mewtwo (Japanese: ミュウツー Mewtwo) is a Psychic-type legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve to or from any other Pokémon. However, it does have an alternate form with an unknown name. The method by which it changes forms is unknown.

It is among the most well-known Pokémon, being the star of the first movie and, in Generation I, the most powerful Pokémon in regards to its total base stats. It is a member of the Mew duo along with Mew.

Biology

Physiology

Mewtwo is one of the first Pokémon created by science. The scientists who created it dreamed of creating the world's strongest Pokémon. It is unique in that it was the only clone to survive the cloning process before it destroyed the facility in which it was created. However, this has yet to be fully confirmed.

Mewtwo is a creature with a humanoid frame, but has some feline features. Mewtwo's body is grey with a long, purple tail. It has three circular pads on its fingers and opposable toes on the inside of its feet, like many real-world primates, as well as two others that face forward. It has purple eyes (that glow blue during some attacks) and two blunt horns.

One of Mewtwo's most notable features is the tube extending from the back of its skull to its spine. It is most likely a secondary spinal cord, or a system of nerves, allowing for an increased amount of blood and sensory transmission to the brain, heightening its psychic powers.

In its alternate form, it is smaller and is closer to Mew in size. Its head loses the tube and gains a large growth on the back that resembles its other form's tail, a ring-shaped crest with two thin, pointed horns, and red eyes with faint scleras. Instead of a breastplate-shaped chest, it develops a long, bumpy ridge much like a sternum. Its forearms thicken, its fingers and toes become purple and smooth, and its middle toes become larger than the others. Its grey body takes on a purplish tinge, and the growth on its head is mostly purple.

Gender differences

Mewtwo is a genderless species.

Special abilities

Mewtwo is highly skilled with Psychic powers. It can levitate through use of telekinesis, speak telepathically, and take control of another living being's mind. It has a powerful signature move, Psystrike, and it is also known for its powerful Shadow Ball and Aura Sphere. Mewtwo is also capable of wielding various types of attacks (but to a lesser extent than Mew). To exert its powerful psychic abilities, it will stay motionless for long periods of time in intense concentration to raise its capabilities to their maximum power.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Mewtwo fights with a highly skilled combination of Psywaves and a giant spoon for long range and close range battles, respectively.

In the anime, Mewtwo also has the ability to telekinetically create a massive hurricane and is constantly protected from harm inside a reflective sphere of psychic energy. In the English dub, it is claimed that the hurricane was powerful enough to destroy the planet, as well as Mewtwo being able to block a Pokémon's "special abilities."

Mewtwo has another form; however, nothing is known about it other than its appearance.

Behavior

Due to its early visions of the human race, Mewtwo is known to be very aggressive and thinks of nothing but battling and defeating its foes. Its viciousness results from repeated DNA splicing and, in the anime, the loss of its friend Amber (whom it completely forgot about after its creators administered a serum to wipe its memory). During the anime special Mewtwo Returns, however, Mewtwo seems to have developed a very protective and guardian-like nature, to the point of surrendering to Giovanni just to keep its fellow clones safe.

Habitat

Mewtwo, being a cloned Pokémon, has no natural habitat. However, it generally likes to be in dark solitude, such as the darkness of a deep cave. In Kanto, it can be found in the lowest level of Cerulean Cave. In the anime, Mewtwo has been seen roaming a large city under the cover of night. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team, Mewtwo is said to sleep in a cave located in the west.

History

According to the scientific logs found in the Pokémon Mansion of Cinnabar Island, Mewtwo was born of a pregnant Mew, found deep in the jungles of Guyana, whose embryo had been tampered with to alter its DNA. It was held and studied in the mansion where the scientists, including Blaine and Mr. Fuji, performed horrific gene-splicing experiments that made it vicious and extremely powerful. It eventually broke free of the Mansion, destroying it in the process, and fled. It can be encountered in Cerulean Cave, accessible only after a Trainer has proven his or her skill at the Indigo Plateau.

Major appearances

Mewtwo (anime)

While Mewtwo has been the Pokémon of focus of a movie and a special, it also made brief appearances in The Battle of the Badge and Showdown at the Po-ké Corral in its body armor. The first instance was when Giovanni used it to battle Gary's Arcanine and Nidoking. The second time was when Mewtwo totaled Giovanni's headquarters and flew off. While a scene involving Mewtwo and Giovanni did appear in It's Mr. Mime Time, it wasn't in the movie. Mewtwo made further appearances during the openings of Jirachi Wish Maker standing on a rooftop wearing a cape, in the intro of Destiny Deoxys and The Rise of Darkrai, chasing a Mew.

Mewtwo (M16)

Another Mewtwo debuted in its new forme in the special episode SS026, a prologue to the upcoming movie M16. In the movie, Mewtwo appears in both of its formes, fighting against the Genesect Army alongside Ash and his friends.

Other

A mirage Mewtwo appears in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon and is the most powerful Pokémon controlled by the Mirage Master.

Mewtwo has a similar origin and personality to the Mewtwo that appeared in the anime. It is a genetically engineered Pokémon created by Blaine for Team Rocket by splicing Mew's DNA with his own. Blaine later defected from Team Rocket and hid himself away, as both he and Mewtwo were suffering from an illness caused by a shared psychic link due to their mutual DNA. Mewtwo went on a rampage and hid itself in the Cerulean Cave, but Red was able to capture it with a Master Ball. Red returned it to Blaine so he could attempt to show the mutant compassion and, if possible, find a cure for their illness. Blaine and Mewtwo fought against Lance two years later, but were defeated when their condition weakened them and Blaine collapsed. The pair were later cured by the flames of Entei, whom Blaine had earlier befriended and partnered with. Later, Blaine left Mewtwo on his own. The legendary Pokémon only returned in the FireRed & LeafGreen arc when he learned of Giovanni's plans to use Deoxys for nefarious purposes. Once it could communicate telepathically, Mewtwo joined up with Red in an attempt to defeat Deoxys and Giovanni. With Red's help, Mewtwo managed to defeat the duo after a tough fight that nearly killed it. It has a Quiet nature.

In the Pokémon Get da ze! manga

Shū's father is portrayed as having been the creator of Mewtwo after a failed five-year search for the elusive Mew.

In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga

Mewtwo made its first appearance in the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga and debuted in Big Battle In The Viridian Forest!!

Trivia

Origin

Like Mew, Mewtwo has some feline characteristics. Its body structure is much larger as a result of gene splicing. Mewtwo also has some characteristics of a grey alien.

Name origin

Mewtwo is a combination of Mew (the Pokémon it originated from) and two (indicating that it is a clone). It also sounds somewhat similar to mutant (myūtanto).
