The Memory Girl (Japanese: おもいでむすめ Memory Girl) is a character in the Generation VI games that tells the player about a Pokémon's experiences with its current Trainer and original Trainer. In X and Y, she stands outside the Pokémon Center in Anistar City, and has the appearance of a Furisode Girl. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, she stands outside the Pokémon Center in Lilycove City.
A memory (Japanese: 思い出 memory) is a feature in the core series Pokémon games introduced in Generation VI that describes a Pokémon's experiences with its current Trainer and original Trainer.

Mechanics
A Pokémon can be selected from either the party or the Pokémon Storage System. An Egg cannot be selected. The memories of Pokémon range from meeting the Trainer for the first time, defeating wild Pokémon or Gym Leaders, using HM moves outside of battle, exploring various locations, evolving, etc. A Pokémon's memory may change over time as it has new experiences with its Trainer.
section
To check a Pokémon's memories, the player can take it to an NPC who can read a Pokémon's memories. A Pokémon can be selected from either the party or the Pokémon Storage System. Eggs cannot be selected. The memories of Pokémon range from meeting the Trainer for the first time, defeating wild Pokémon or Gym Leaders, using HM moves outside of battle, exploring various locations, evolving, etc. A Pokémon's memory may change over time as it has new experiences with its Trainer.

For example, the Memory Girl may say of a Bulbasaur hatched from an Egg: "Bulbasaur hatched from an Egg and saw original Trainer for the first time at... a large city. The Pokémon remembers that it was restless." Taking the Bulbasaur to be rated by the stats judge may change the memory to: "Bulbasaur was stared at by the Judge intensely when it met him with original Trainer. The Pokémon remembers that it felt proud." If the Bulbasaur is then traded to another player, in addition to the most recent memory with the original Trainer, the Memory Girl may add: "And... Bulbasaur became other Trainers friend when it arrived via Link Trade at... 17. The Pokémon remembers that it got nervous." If the Bulbasaur is then returned to its original Trainer, it will retain its memory from the previous Trainer, but it will not remember this Trainer if traded to a third Trainer.
For example, in Pokémon X and Y, the Memory Girl may say of a Bulbasaur hatched from an Egg: "Bulbasaur hatched from an Egg and saw original Trainer for the first time at... a large city.

Pokémon received from events or transferred from a Generation V game won't have any memories of their original Trainer; the Memory Girl will say "The Pokémon seems to have a good memory, but it doesn't seem to be able to remember..." They may still make new memories with their current Trainer however. Pokémon who have a memory exclusive to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will also display this message in Pokémon X and Y; the memory will be displayed correctly if traded back to a copy of Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.
Pokémon received from events or transferred from a Generation V or VII game have no memories of their original Trainer (with the exception of Pokémon received from an in-game trade in Sun and Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon); the Memory Girl will say "The Pokémon seems to have a good memory, but it doesn't seem to be able to remember..." They may still make new memories with their current Trainer, however. Pokémon who have a memory exclusive to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will also display this message in Pokémon X and Y; the memory will be displayed again when transferred to a later game.

Pokémon with a memory exclusive to Pokémon X and Y will cause a blank dialogue box to appear if this memory is checked in Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.
Locations
The following NPCs can read a Pokémon's memories:
* In X and Y, the Memory Girl (Japanese: 思い出娘 Memory Girl) stands outside the Pokémon Center in Anistar City, and has the appearance of a Furisode Girl.
* In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Memory Girl (Japanese: おもいでむすめ Memory Girl) stands outside the Pokémon Center in Lilycove City, and has the appearance of a young girl.
* In Sword and Shield, Jack can be found in any Pokémon Center, and has the appearance of a Café Master.

Memories cannot be checked in the Generation VII games.

List of memories
A Pokémon's memories are stored across ten bytes in the Pokémon data structure, with memories with the current Trainer and the original Trainer occupying five bytes each. Of these five bytes, the index numbers of the memory, its rank, and its feeling occupy one byte each, while the remaining two bytes store variable data.

All memories end with the text "<rank> that <feeling>."; this is omitted in the table below. Memories marked with only XY and SwSh in the table display a blank dialogue box in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Feelings
In the Generation VI games, feelings are indexed from 0, while in the Generation VIII games, feelings are indexed from 1. Due to a bug, this value is neither modified when a Pokémon is transferred from Generation VI to Generation VIII through Pokémon Bank and Pokémon HOME nor do Pokémon Sword and Shield specially handle memories of transferred Pokémon. This means that the feeling "it was happy" displays as an empty string (or the same as the last checked Pokémon's feeling if another Pokémon's memories have been checked), and all subsequent feelings are displayed as a different feeling, shifted by one with respect to their index number.

*If the Pokémon has no data for some set of memories
Variable data
:"The Pokémon seems to have a good memory, but it doesn't seem to be able to remember..."
Depending on the variable in the memory text, two bytes in the Pokémon data structure can be read as the index number of a place, specific location, an item, a move, or the species of another Pokémon.

;Unknown
In Generation VI, if the variable data is not recognized, the game will display one of the following placeholders in place of the actual name of the item, move, or Pokémon.
:"a certain item"
:"a certain item"
:"a certain move"
:"a certain move"
:"a Pokémon"
:"a Pokémon"

Possible memories
Places
:"<Pokémon> met <Trainer> at...<location>. <Trainer> threw a Poké Ball at it, and they started to travel together."
section
:"<Pokémon> hatched from an Egg and saw <Trainer> for the first time at... <location>."
In the Generation VIII games, the places added in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are listed in a different order in the internal data, with most of these places now corresponding to different index numbers. Due to a bug, this value is neither modified when a Pokémon is transferred from Generation VI to Generation VIII through Pokémon Bank and Pokémon HOME nor do Pokémon Sword and Shield specially handle memories of transferred Pokémon. This means that, for example, a Terrakion with a memory of being caught at the Pathless Plain would display in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire as being caught at "a tiny island", but this memory would display as being caught "in a Secret Base" once transferred to Sword and Shield.

* The location memory for Azure Bay and Hoenn water routes is すいどう in the Japanese version, which can be translated as either "water route" or "water supply". This ambiguity caused it to be mistranslated in X and Y as "a sewer", and retranslated in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire as "a watery route".
* The location memory for Azure Bay and Hoenn water routes is 水道 suidō in the Japanese version, which can be translated as either "water route" or "water supply". This ambiguity caused it to be mistranslated in English, German, and French versions of X and Y as "a sewer", and retranslated in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire as "a watery route".
** In Spanish, it was mistranslated as "unas alcantarillas" (a sewer) and remains unchanged in Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sword, and Shield.
** In Italian, it was originally translated as "in un canale" (in a channel) and was retranslated as "in una via d'acqua" (in a waterway) in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and as "in un percorso acquatico" (in a water route) in Sword and Shield.

A Bulbasaur's memory being read in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

A memory (Japanese: 思い出 memory) is a feature in the core series Pokémon games introduced in Generation VI that describes a Pokémon's experiences with its current Trainer and original Trainer.

Mechanics

050Diglett.png This section is incomplete.
Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.
Reason: Determine how memories are overwritten

To check a Pokémon's memories, the player can take it to an NPC who can read a Pokémon's memories. A Pokémon can be selected from either the party or the Pokémon Storage System. Eggs cannot be selected. The memories of Pokémon range from meeting the Trainer for the first time, defeating wild Pokémon or Gym Leaders, using HM moves outside of battle, exploring various locations, evolving, etc. A Pokémon's memory may change over time as it has new experiences with its Trainer.

For example, in Pokémon X and Y, the Memory Girl may say of a Bulbasaur hatched from an Egg: "Bulbasaur hatched from an Egg and saw original Trainer for the first time at... a large city. Bulbasaur became other Trainer's friend when it arrived via Link Trade at... a snow-swept road. The Pokémon remembers that it got nervous." If the Bulbasaur is then returned to its original Trainer, it will retain its memory from the previous Trainer, but it will not remember this Trainer if traded to a third Trainer.

Pokémon received from events or transferred from a Generation V or VII game have no memories of their original Trainer (with the exception of Pokémon received from an in-game trade in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon); the Memory Girl will say "The Pokémon seems to have a good memory, but it doesn't seem to be able to remember..." They may still make new memories with their current Trainer, however. Pokémon who have a memory exclusive to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will also display this message in Pokémon X and Y; the memory will be displayed again when transferred to a later game.

Locations

The following NPCs can read a Pokémon's memories:

Memories cannot be checked in the Generation VII games.

Quotes

A Pokémon will have two sets of memories if it has been traded. If this is the case, then the Pokémon's memories with its current Trainer will be second; if the current Trainer is also the Pokémon's original Trainer, then the first memory will be from its previous owner, otherwise they will be from the Pokémon's original Trainer.

Variable data

Depending on the variable in the memory text, two bytes in the Pokémon data structure can be read as the index number of a place, specific location, an item, a move, or the species of another Pokémon.

In Generation VI, if the variable data is not recognized, the game will display one of the following placeholders in place of the actual name of the item, move, or Pokémon.

"a certain item"
"a certain move"
"a Pokémon"

Places

050Diglett.png This section is incomplete.
Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.
Reason: SwSh locations, ORAS buildings, any other missing locations

In the Generation VIII games, the places added in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are listed in a different order in the internal data, with most of these places now corresponding to different index numbers.

Trivia

  • The location memory for Azure Bay and Hoenn water routes is 水道 suidō in the Japanese version, which can be translated as either "water route" or "water supply". This ambiguity caused it to be mistranslated in English, German, and French versions of X and Y as "a sewer", and retranslated in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire as "a watery route".
    • In Spanish, it was mistranslated as "unas alcantarillas" (a sewer) and remains unchanged in Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sword, and Shield.
    • In Italian, it was originally translated as "in un canale" (in a channel) and was retranslated as "in una via d'acqua" (in a waterway) in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and as "in un percorso acquatico" (in a water route) in Sword and Shield.
