Meltan (Japanese: メルタン Meltan) is a Steel-type Mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation VII in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.
In Pokémon GO, it evolves into Melmetal by using 400 Meltan Candy. It cannot be evolved in other games.
Its appearance was first teased during the September Pokémon GO Community Day on September 22, 2018, and it was officially revealed on September 25, 2018.
Biology
Meltan is a small Pokémon with a shiny, silvery body made of liquid metal. Its head is a golden hexagon with a large circular hole in its center, resembling a hexagonal nut. Floating inside the hole is its eye. A red tail extends from its body with two tiny protrusions at the end.
It is a curious and expressive Pokémon. Meltan's liquid arms and legs can corrode and absorb metal into its body, which it uses to generate electricity. Its eye can use this energy to fire an attack against opponents.[1] Meltan are instinctively drawn towards each in order to combine into Melmetal.
Many Ditto transformed into Meltan have been observed in Pokémon GO, including in Professor Willow's field work. It has also been described in ancient texts found in the same place as the Mystery Box, a mysterious item that attracts Meltan to its location when opened. As seen in the anime, the hexagonal nut on the bodies of Meltan can be removed. They have also been seen working in packs and can eat metal. When provoked, they spin their heads, creating a sound that calls others of its own kind. This head-spinning can also be used as a sign of affection. The anime has also shown Meltan can be tamed if fed metal-like treats.

Trivia
- Meltan is the only Mythical Pokémon that is capable of evolution.
- Meltan is tied with Alolan Diglett and Klefki as the shortest Steel-type Pokémon.
- It is also tied with Shaymin as the shortest Mythical Pokémon.
- Meltan, along with its evolved form Melmetal, is the only Pokémon in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! to not be introduced in Generation I.
- This makes Meltan, along with its evolved form Melmetal, the only Pokémon in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! whose Kanto Pokédex number (152) is not the same as its National Pokédex number (808). While Kanto Pokédex numbers are normally used throughout the game, the judge screen displays National Pokédex numbers, which is evident for Meltan and Melmetal.
- Meltan is the only Pokémon capable of evolution that cannot be evolved in the core series games.
- Meltan is the first Mythical Pokémon caught by a main character in the anime.
- In the anime, Professor Oak is the person who gives Meltan its species name.
Origin
Meltan may be based on a hexagonal nut, and its tail resembles an exposed wire. Its body is based on mercury, a metallic element that is liquid at room temperature. Mercury can also conduct electricity, as well as react with many other metals to form amalgams.
Name origin
Meltan may be a combination of melt, metal, and たん -tan (diminutive Japanese suffix). It may also be derived from tantalum or molten.
