According to [[Professor Sycamore]], Mega Stones are the results of [[Evolutionary stone]]s being irradiated by the power of the [[Legendary Pokémon]] {{p|Xerneas}}{{sup/6|X}} or {{p|Yveltal}}{{sup/6|Y}}.

==Mechanics==

During a {{pkmn|battle}}, a {{pkmn|Trainer}} can use their [[Key Stone]] (held in the Mega Ring{{sup/6|XY}}, Mega Bracelet{{sup/6|ORAS}}, [[Z-Ring]]{{sup/7|SM}}, or [[Z-Power Ring]]{{sup/7|USUM}} for the player character) to Mega Evolve a Pokémon that holds its corresponding Mega Stone before it attacks. Pokémon only remain Mega Evolved during battles and [[Pokémon Contest|Pokémon Contest Spectaculars]], and will revert to their original state once the battle has ended or if they [[fainting|faint]]. Every Pokémon that can undergo Mega Evolution has a corresponding Mega Stone that is named after it, except for {{p|Rayquaza}}, which instead needs to know the move {{m|Dragon Ascent}} to Mega Evolve. Some Pokémon have multiple different Mega Stones for their species.

In {{g|Sun and Moon}}, only Mega Stones for Pokémon in the [[List of Pokémon by Alola Pokédex number (Sun and Moon)|Alola Pokédex]] and for the fully-evolved [[Kanto]] {{pkmn2|starter}}s are available through normal gameplay. [[Dexio]] gives the player the Alakazite and a Key Stone after defeating him on [[Ancient Poni Path]] after becoming {{pkmn|Champion}}. Most Mega Stones can be purchased at the [[Battle Tree]] for 64 [[Battle Point]]s. {{ga|Red}} will give the player all Mega Stones associated with the starter Pokémon of the Kanto region after being defeated in a Single Challenge at the Battle Tree. The remaining Mega Stones have been distributed as [[event item]]s; by participating in [[Pokémon Global Link]] online competitions or with universal codes provided on the official Pokémon website.

In {{g|Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon}}, all Mega Stones are available for purchase at the Battle Tree except for [[Diancite]], which is given to the player at [[Olivia]]'s {{DL|Konikoni City|jewelry store}} in [[Konikoni City]] for showing a man a {{p|Diancie}}, and the Kanto Starter Mega Stones, which are received from Red or Blue. Dexio also gives the player Alakazite in these games, but he is found at the entrance to [[Poni Meadow]] in [[Poni Plains]].

In the {{series|XY}}, Pokémon wear Mega Stones using equipment similar to that which their {{pkmn|Trainer}}s use to hold their [[Key Stone]]s. The equipment disappears while the Pokémon is in its Mega Evolved state. In the {{series|Sun & Moon}}, Mega Stones appear to be merged with the body of their holders and only appear when Mega Evolution is triggered.

Mega Stones were first mentioned in ''[[XY002|Lumiose City Pursuit!]]'', where [[Professor Sycamore]] told {{Ash}} that a "special stone" is required to trigger Mega Evolution, referring to Mega Stones.

Mega Stones made their physical debut in ''[[SS029|Mega Evolution Special I]]''. The Mega Stones seen were [[Alain]]'s [[Charizardite X]], [[Astrid]]'s [[Absolite]], [[Remo]]'s [[Garchompite]], [[Siebold]]'s [[Blastoisinite]], and a [[Gyaradosite]] found by Alain from a set of ancient ruins. In addition, a [[Lucarionite]] was seen in a painting featuring the first-ever Mega Evolution, which was shown to Alain by Professor Sycamore in a flashback. Astrid's Absolite made a brief reappearance during the opening credits of ''[[M17|Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction]]''.

[[Diantha]]'s {{TP|Diantha|Gardevoir}}'s [[Gardevoirite]] debuted in ''[[XY028|The Bonds of Evolution!]]''. The Embrace Pokémon was shown carrying its Mega Stone in a necklace around its neck.

A Lucarionite appeared in ''[[XY031|The Cave of Trials!]]'', where it was found by [[Korrina]] in a cave near [[Geosenge Town]]. After battling a {{p|Blaziken}} guarding the Lucarionite—which was afterward revealed to belong to Korrina's grandfather, [[Gurkinn]]—Korrina obtained the Mega Stone and used it to Mega Evolve her {{TP|Korrina|Lucario}}. The uncut Lucarionite was later set in an armband by [[McGinty]], allowing Lucario to wear the Mega Stone.

Another Lucarionite appeared in ''[[XY032|The Aura Storm!]]'', under the ownership of Gurkinn. Much like Korrina's Lucario, Gurkinn's Lucario also wears its Lucarionite in an armband on its left wrist.

A [[Mawilite]] appeared in ''[[XY034|The Bonds of Mega Evolution!]]'', worn by [[Mabel]]'s {{p|Mawile}} in a piece of jewelry placed at the foot of its head jaws.

A Lucarionite appeared in a story told by Gurkinn in ''[[XY043|Origins of Mega Evolution!]]'', depicting the first known Mega Evolution.

{{Steven}}'s {{Shiny}} {{TP|Steven|Metagross}}'s [[Metagrossite]] appeared in ''[[SS031|Mega Evolution Special II]]'', wearing it as a large bracelet on its right foreleg. An [[Ampharosite]] was also seen in a flashback in the same episode, having been found by [[Lysandre]] before Alain could get his hands on it.

Another Garchompite, belonging to Professor Sycamore and his Garchomp, appeared in ''[[XY068|Garchomp's Mega Bond!]]''. Garchomp wears her Mega Stone as a choker around her neck.

Several different Mega Stones appeared in ''[[SS035|Mega Evolution Special IV]]''. The Mega Stones seen included a [[Venusaurite]] attached to the tree on a {{p|Venusaur}}'s back; an [[Alakazite]] tied onto one of {{p|Alakazam}}'s spoons; and [[Malva]]'s [[Houndoominite]], which is attached to a collar her {{p|Houndoom}} wears around its neck.

An [[Audinite]] appeared in ''[[XY096|A Giga Battle with Mega Results!]]'', where a [[Nurse Joy]] with an {{TP|Nurse Joy|Audino}} had found one. She later used it and Professor Sycamore's Key Stone to Mega Evolve Audino.

An [[Abomasite]] appeared in ''[[XY122|A Real Icebreaker!]]'', worn by [[Wulfric]]'s {{p|Abomasnow}}. The Frost Tree Pokémon wears its Mega Stone on its chest, revealing it only when it is about to Mega Evolve.

A [[Charizardite Y]] appeared in ''[[XY125|A League of His Own!]]'', worn by {{an|Trevor}}'s {{TP|Trevor|Charizard}} in a ring around its tail.

A [[Sceptilite]] appeared in ''[[XY126|Valuable Experience for All!]]'', worn by [[Sawyer]]'s {{TP|Sawyer|Sceptile}} on a bandanna that is tied around its neck.

A [[Gyaradosite]] appeared in ''[[XY133|Coming Apart at the Dreams!]]'', worn by [[Lysandre]]'s Shiny {{p|Gyarados}} around its neck in a holder similar to the one Alain's Charizard keeps its Charizardite X in. It is unknown whether this is the same Gyaradosite that Alain found in ''Mega Evolution Special I'', or a different one.
