Mega Evolution (Japanese: メガシンカ Mega Evolution) is a temporary transformation introduced to Pokémon GO on August 27, 2020. Like in the core series, Mega Evolution will significantly increase a Pokémon's stats and potentially change its type, but its moves will remain the same. However, rather than using a Mega Stone, an eligible Pokémon instead consumes Mega Energies to undergo a temporary Mega Evolution.

Activation

Mega Evolving a Pokémon costs a large amount of Mega Energies for the first time and a significantly reduced amount for subsequent times. As of September 3, 2020, the reduced cost is one-fifth of the initial amount. (When first introduced, subsequent Mega Evolutions required one-fourth of the initial Mega Energy.) This reduction is applied only to that specific Pokémon, not the species as a whole. And for a Pokémon with multiple Mega Evolutions, the reduction only applies to forms it has previously Mega Evolved into. So if a Charizard has previously evolved into Mega Charizard X for the first time, then it would cost Charizard Mega Energy40 to evolve into Mega Charizard X again, but Charizard Mega Energy200 to evolve into Mega Charizard Y.

In addition, after registering a Mega Evolution into the Pokédex, walking a Buddy Pokémon that belongs to that Mega Evolution's evolutionary family can yield its respective Mega Energies (at Mega Energy5 per km).

Shadow Pokémon and Clone Pokémon cannot Mega Evolve, but Purified Pokémon and other event forms can.[1] Slowbro's Galarian Form cannot Mega Evolve.

  • Mega Evolution lasts for eight hours. This timer can be seen on the Mega Evolved Pokémon's summary view.
    • Prior to October 15, 2020, Mega Evolution lasted four hours.
  • A player can only have one active Mega Evolution at a time. A player that has recently Mega Evolved a Pokémon would have to wait out the timer before Mega Evolving another one.
  • Mega-Evolved Pokémon cannot be deployed to defend Gyms, traded, or powered up

However, some Pokémon that can Mega Evolve in the core series games cannot Mega Evolve in Pokémon GO.

In battle

Mega-evolved Pokémon can be used in all types of battles, except in the GO Battle League.

When used in Raid Battles, a Mega-Evolved Pokémon provides special damage bonuses to all allies when on the battlefield:

  • ×1.3 damage for all moves that match any of the ally Mega-evolved Pokémon's type or
  • ×1.1 damage increase for all other ally Pokémon's moves

Prior to 0.189.0 update, there was a bug that caused Mega-evolved Pokémon to be more powerful depending on the level the Pokémon was powered up from.

Multiple players can send out Mega-evolved Pokémon at one time, but the damage bonuses will not stack, and only the highest possible damage bonus will be applied.

Outside of battle

If a player has a Mega Evolved Pokémon, then catching a Pokémon may yield one extra Candy if

  • The caught Pokémon shares a type with the Mega Evolved Pokémon or
  • The Pokémon was caught from a raid, regardless of type.

Mega Raids

Main article: Raid Battle

Mega-evolved Pokémon may appear as Raid Bosses for Mega Raids. Upon completion, Mega Raids reward Mega Energies that correspond to the Mega Raid Boss. Upon defeat, the Raid Boss will revert to its normal form and can be caught as such during the bonus challenge.
