Marshal (Japanese: レンブ Renbu) is a Master Fighting-type Trainer and member of the Unova Elite Four.

In the games

In Pokémon Black and White, Marshal appears as a member of the Elite Four of Unova. He calls himself Alder's apprentice, though he is largely unaware of Alder's thoughts. He is first mentioned outside Twist Mountain when Alder says Cheren reminds him of Marshal due to the value he places on power. Post-game, Marshal appears in Victory Road before Cheren's rematch, at the cave exit of Victory Road.

In Black 2 and White 2, Marshal first appears outside the south entrance of Twist Mountain, where he will prevent the player from entering, saying there has been a cave-in.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Marshal first appears in Nimbasa City carrying an unconscious White after she fell off the Rondez-View Ferris Wheel. After stopping Black who had mistaken him as her attacker, Marshal hands the girl to him and excuses himself. Later, he meets up with Alder for a special event at the Battle Subway and they begin battling. Despite Marshal seemingly gaining the upper hand, Alder manages to defeat him. They reveal that they were testing the Battle Subway before it gets open to public, but also need a normal Trainer to also test it. White decides to trial the Battle Subway despite having no battling experience, and after White captures a Pokémon with Black's help, Marshal reveals that Black's newly-caught Tirtouga used to belong to him before he released it a day earlier.

On Route 6, Marshal tries to convince Alder to not leave the Pokémon League, only for his pleas to be refused. They are approached by N, who had awakened Zekrom and befriended it. When N challenges Alder to a Double Battle as a part of his plan to keep humans and Pokémon separated, Marshal referees the battle. In the end, Alder loses and eventually disappears, allowing Team Plasma to use his defeat as a means to justify their goals, which only increased the amount of released Pokémon and lowered the number of Pokémon League spectators.

At the Pokémon League, Marshal gathers with his fellow Elite Four members to make way for the tournament. Marshal, furious at how Team Plasma has used Alder's defeat to justify their goals, asks his allies to help join in the fight against them. Much to his disappointment, none of them agree with his wishes. The four then watch as spectators for the tournament before their battles can begin. Although the tournament is won by Black, the event is interrupted by Team Plasma, who attacks the stadium by surrounding it with N's Castle. The Elite Four travel on Shauntal's Golurk to try and confront N at the top of the castle, but they are attacked by Hood Man, who uses Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus against them to try and figure out how to activate the three Pokémon's Therian Formes.

		Throh is the first Pokémon Marshal is seen to own. He fought Black's Nite and won when Black thought that Marshal had kidnapped White and attacked him. Throh's only known move is Storm Throw.

		Mienshao is the third Pokémon Marshal is seen to own. It was used to battle Alder in the Battle Subway. Although it was shown to be very quick, Alder's Accelgor managed to defeat it. Mienshao's only known move is Pound.

		Conkeldurr is the fourth Pokémon Marshal is seen to own. It was first seen with its Trainer at the Pokémon League. Later, it was used to battle the Hood Man's Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus. None of Conkeldurr's moves are known.

		Marshal had owned a Tirtouga sometime before arriving in Nimbasa City. Because of its hard-to-control nature, he had released it the day before meeting Black and White. It was later captured by Black and was named Costa.

Marshal appears alongside the other Elite Four members defeated by N's Zekrom at the destroyed Pokémon League. He is also shown on the cover of Monthly Fighting, and Shin and his Emboar are fans of his.

Trivia

• In his pre-National Pokédex battle in Black and White, Marshal is the only member of any Elite Four who has no dual-type Pokémon.
• According to an interview with Yusuke Ohmura in Nintendo Dream, Marshal's theme is a street fighter and tiger, and his original design featured a large hood and cap.^[1]
• Marshal says at the Pokémon League that the player met him at Twist Mountain, even if the player didn't meet him, he still says the same sentence in rematches.
