Website Main Page

Marriland.com is a fan website that was created by Marriland (a.k.a Devin) in June 2003. Following a hiatus of three years between 2016 to 2019, the site has undergone a rebuilding process, with all content prior to 2019 being lost. The website serves as a hub for Pokémon-related content. There exists a forum, known as Marriland Forums for fans of Marriland to discuss content, but it is administered separately from Marriland.com, which is run by Marriland. Both feature a Marill as a mascot, and both were part of the Curse network between 2012 and 2018, where the forum was known as Azurilland Forums.

History

Forums

Server issues

The Marriland Forums have suffered from server problems ever since Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were released in April 2007. The "Diamond/Pearl Rush," as it is known on the forums, created a surge of traffic on the main site, and many new members signed up for the forums. Due to the website being fairly small in scale before this, the servers that were in place at the time were not in a state to handle the influx of traffic. This created a phenomenon dubbed "Marrilag" on the forums. Loading pages would take up to ten minutes at a time during a bad period, and even resulted in the server going down for hours at a time, as it couldn't handle the flood of new users.

This dire state persisted throughout 2007 and into 2008. During this time, Marriland himself was a declining presence on the forums due to commitments to the main site and real life obligations. In July 2008, Marriland began updating the forums from phpBB2 to phpBB3, following complaints from both users of the forums and members of staff. The transition began at the beginning of August 2008, with the boards staying open for as long as possible before closing in September 2008. Due to delays, the boards were closed for all members for approximately two months, with the transition being completed on November 12. Despite server issues and periods of maintenance being needed after the completion of the transition, usage issues decreased dramatically from the phpBB2 period.

Curse

On December 4, 2012, Marriland joined the gaming network Curse, giving it access to Curses' staff, a new look, and its own forums.

Fandom

Fandom acquired most of Curse in December 2018. In 2019, Azurilland.com was instead redirected to Pokémon Wiki, which is owned by Fandom.

Forum Reboot and Closure

After Curse closed the Azurilland Forums, a reincarnation of the Marriland Forums emerged in 2018 with the help of Devin himself. Due to a decline in activity, the forums was permanently shut down on February 15, 2021 and relegated to a Discord only community known as Village Bridge.

Services

Adopt-A-Newbie!

The Marriland Forums have a helpful service called "Adopt-A-Newbie!", where newcomers (called "newbies") can get a helpful start along with some knowledge about the forums and what to do. The service is located in the "General Forums" section inside the "Introduce Yourself!" forum and involves a mentor system to assist newbies who come and ask for help. Newbies pick their mentor by looking at each mentor's application to see how many newbies he can mentor and what guidance the mentor provides. Mentors can only mentor newbies who are working on their Green and Yellow rank. After one month the newbie turns into a "Graduated Newbie" and is added to the Graduated Newbie list.

The "Adopt-A-Newbie!" service has mentored over 140 Marriland Forums newcomers so far. However, "Adopt-A-Newbie!" is currently accepting applications to become a mentor only after fulfillment of certain criteria as of March 23, 2012.

Origin

The idea for "Adopt-A-Newbie!" was suggested by Marriland Moderator: Pupitar247 on September 29, 2007. The idea started running on the forums on June 05, 2008.

"Adopt-A-Newbie!" was created by Marriland Administrator Azulkitten.

Team Builder

Marrilands' Team Builder tool allows users to input a standard six-member party and view the types that their team overall is weak to, resistant to, and immune to; it also calculates the average of the teams' base stats.
