It evolves from Cubone starting at level 28.

Biology

Physiology

It looks mostly like a larger Cubone. Its head has grown into the skull it wore as a baby, changing its shape.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Marowak are highly skilled at fighting with the bones they carry around, capable of using them as clubs for close combat or as boomerang-like throwing weapons.

Marowak, and its pre-evolution, Cubone, are the only known Pokémon that learn Bone Club and Bonemerang.

Behavior

Upon evolution, Marowak has overcome the grief of never seeing its mother. Its behavior has become ferocious and savage.

Major Appearances

Marowak first appeared in Bad to the Bone under the ownership of Otoshi, who had recently got his gym badges stolen by Team Rocket. The Marowak left Otoshi because it felt that if he lost his badges, he lost the respect Marowak had for him. Marowak finally decided to come back and help its Trainer when he battled Team Rocket to get his badges back.

Luana, the Gym Leader of Kumquat Island, used a Marowak and an Alakazam against Ash's Pikachu and Charizard in Pokémon Double Trouble.

In The Ole' Berate and Switch!, Oriba used a Marowak in a fake tournament that was created by Team Rocket.

Minor Appearances

During the first round of the Hoenn League in From Brags to Riches, Morrison's opponent, Gavin, used a Marowak and a Machamp against Morrison's Gligar and Growlithe.

At the start of Gymbaliar!, Jessie faced an a opponent named Jeffrey with a Marowak. It defeated her Dustox.

Trivia

  • Marowak's original English name was going to be "Guardia," the Spanish word for guardian.
  • When holding the Thick Club, Marowak can reach a maximum Attack stat of 568. This is the highest attack stat obtainable without the assistance of stat-enhancing moves or berries.
  • Until the release of Lucario (which can learn Bone Rush) in Generation IV, Marowak had three signature moves, tying with Porygon for the most signature moves.
  • According to some of Marowak's Generation II and IV Pokédex entries, somewhere exists a legendary Marowak graveyard. This is a reference to the Elephant's graveyard of modern myth.

Origin

Marowak is probably based on a dinosaur fossil, and type ground because that's where fossils are found. Its Bonemerang move was probably derived from the Aboriginal people who throw boomerangs to catch food.

Name origin

Marowak's name might be a combination of marrow and whack. Garagara may be taken to mean がらがら, clattering. It is worth noting that garagara denotes heavier clattering than karakara.

In other languages

  • German: Knogga - From Knochen (bone).
  • French: Ossatueur - From os (bone) and tueur (slayer).
  • Korean: 텅구리 Tungguri
