Mantine (Japanese: マンタイン Mantain) is a dual-type Water/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves from Mantyke when leveled up with a Remoraid in the party.

Biology

Mantine is a large, manta ray-like Pokémon with wide fins and two ring-shaped marks. Its back is a dark blue with a wavy outline on its wings. It has a streamer-like tail and long "antennae". Two pairs of gills are visible on its gray underside. Generally, it is pictured with a Remoraid attached to its underside, much like a cleaner fish. Mantine can fly in the air if they build up enough speed, in a similar manner to how real-life manta rays breach the surface, and can soar gracefully out of the water. Mantine is mostly docile. It thrives in open seas.

Trivia

  • Mantine can be seen as a parallel to Skarmory. Both of them are Flying-type Generation II Pokémon. Mantine is exclusive to Pokémon Gold and HeartGold, while Skarmory is exclusive to Pokémon Silver and SoulSilver. Furthermore, neither of the two had any evolutions in Gold and Silver.
    • They also have exactly the same base stats, except that Mantine is oriented towards the special stats, while Skarmory is more based in the physical stats.
  • Mantine has the highest Special Defense base stat out of all non-legendary Water and Flying types.
  • Despite the fact that Mantine evolve from Mantyke in the presence of a Remoraid, Remoraid has not been present on any of Mantine's sprites in the main series of games since Generation IV, in which this evolution method was introduced. This may be due to fact that the Remoraid used for evolution doesn't disappear after Mantine evolves from Mantyke.

Origin

It is similar to a manta ray, with some kite-like aspects. Its flying type seems to be a reference to flying rays, known as such due to their propensity for breaching. As Remoraid, a Pokémon based on a rifle, often attaches to the undersides of Mantine's wings, it may also be based on a fighter plane.

Name origin

Mantine may be a combination of manta and marine. It may also be a combination of manta and either brine or Tyne (pronounced tain).
