Mallow (Japanese: マオ Mao) is a student at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island and one of Ash's classmates. She made her debut in Alola to New Adventure!.

History

Mallow when she was younger

Mallow lives with her father Abe at their family restaurant, while her brother Ulu is out on a cooking journey.

As a toddler, Mallow had a walk with her mother in a forest on Melemele Island after her mother had just gotten out of a hospital for an unspecified illness. During the walk, they encountered a wild Bounsweet, which Mallow found very cute. As such, her mother caught it and gave it to her as a gift. However, her mother was soon forced to return to the hospital. Mallow eventually grew tired of her mother's endless apologies about her condition and yelled that she hated her, before running away. Soon after, Mallow's mother passed away due to her illness.

Sometime later, Mallow met Lana and befriended her after they had an adventure in a forest and met a resident Drampa, which was eventually nicknamed Grandpa Forest. Years later, Mallow received a cookbook from Ulu with recipes of various dishes, which he found from old manuscripts while traveling.

Mallow first appeared in Alola to New Adventure!, where she was riding a Ride Tauros with her classmates Lana and Sophocles at the Pokémon School. She accidentally ran over Ash when he stumbled upon the school and, mistaking him for a new student, introduced him as such to her principal, Samson Oak. After the misunderstanding was cleared up, she decided to show Ash around the campus, introducing him to her teacher, Professor Kukui, along the way. She then witnessed Ash join Kiawe in a scuffle against some Team Skull Grunts, and was amazed by his and Pikachu's battle skills. Shortly after the battle, Ash saw the guardian deity Tapu Koko in the sky, but it flew off before Mallow and the other students could see it.

In The Guardian's Challenge!, Mallow threw Ash a surprise welcome party. She acted as the referee in a series of games between him and the other students.

In First Catch in Alola, Ketchum-Style!, Mallow continued to accompany Ash in his attempts to catch a Pokémon and was present when he caught his Rowlet.

In A Seasoned Search!, she revealed that her top goal was to make the Aina's Kitchen the best in the world. In order to accomplish this, she had to recreate a special recipe to attract more customers, but the key ingredient, Yellow Nectar, was out of season. After unsuccessfully using Pikachu's Thunderbolt as a substitute, she set off in search of an Oricorio to help find the Yellow Nectar. During a fight with Team Rocket, who tried to steal the Yellow Nectar, Bounsweet evolved into Steenee, and she successfully recreated the secret recipe.

In Mallow and the Forest Teacher!, Mallow had enough of being overworked by her father at the Kitchen, and ran away. She tripped on a rock and fell down a hill, injuring her knee. She was later found by an Oranguru, who helped her recover. Later, when Team Rocket captured her Steenee, Oranguru helped save her just as Abe and her friends arrived. As Abe recognized the Oranguru from his past, Mallow reconciled with him and returned home.

From Family Determination! to 10,000,000 Reasons to Fight!, Mallow was among those who helped Lillie and Gladion in their mission to rescue their mother Lusamine after Lusamine was kidnapped by the Ultra Beast Nihilego. In Ultra Deep Sea, her Steenee, along with Ash's Litten and Rowlet, and Lana and Sophocles's Pokémon, fought and overcame Lusamine's Mismagius, Milotic, and Lilligant, which were under Nihilego's control. The battle ended when Ash and Pikachu performed 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt to defeat Nihilego, freeing Lusamine from its grasp.

In The Professors' New Adventure!, Mallow attended the wedding of Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet. During the post-nuptials, Lusamine asked Mallow and her classmates to join the Ultra Guardians, a task force dedicated to dealing with any upcoming Ultra Beast incidents, which they accepted.

In A Mission of Ultra Urgency!, Mallow and her classmates set out on their first Ultra Guardians mission. They were tasked with capturing a Buzzwole that emerged from an Ultra Wormhole onto Melemele Island, where it began causing havoc. During the mission, Mallow helped heal a wild Snorlax that was drained of its energy by the Ultra Beast. Eventually, Buzzwole was distracted by Kiawe's flexing long enough for Ash to capture it in a Beast Ball. Afterwards, Buzzwole was released and returned to its home thanks to a wormhole opened by Lusamine's team.

Mallow in her Ultra Guardian uniform

In Rise and Shine, Starship!, Mallow and her classmates traveled to Bamboo Hill to see a mysterious creature that Sophocles had discovered the night before. Together, the group unsuccessfully tried to dig it up. The next day, Lusamine revealed the creature was actually an Ultra Beast named Celesteela and set the Ultra Guardians off to return it back home. Attempts to catch Celesteela in a Beast Ball proved unsuccessful as it was firmly rooted down. Team Rocket later attempted to catch Celesteela, forcing the Ultra Guardians to protect it as Celesteela began to launch into the air. After creating an area for Celesteela to launch safely without setting the immediate area ablaze, they watched it fly home.

In Sours for the Sweet!, Mallow prepared to enter the Alola Bread Festival‎‎ with her father. Due to Abe's back problems, he couldn't enter, but Mallow was saved by the arrival of her brother, Ulu. Together, they entered the competition, but an incident led to Ulu accidentally losing the Berries they were going to use to a Snorlax. With the assistance of her friends and Steenee, Mallow successfully made sweet bread without the Berries, successfully winning the competition. However, by that point, Ulu had left to go on another journey.

In Twirling with a Bang!, Mallow and her classmates watched a fireworks show. The show was interrupted by a strange creature that used its exploding head to create a fireworks show of its own. The next day, the Ultra Guardians were called down by Lusamine, who revealed the creature from before was the Ultra Beast Blacephalon. The Ultra Guardians set off to find Blacephalon, but their efforts to track it down only led to a different Ultra Beast, later named Xurkitree by Lusamine. When Blacephalon and Xurkitree met, they began doing flashy performances in an attempt to outdo the other. Worried that serious trouble could arise if the competition kept escalating, the Ultra Guardians combined the attacks of their partner and Ride Pokémon into a giant firework that distracted the Ultra Beasts long enough for Ash to make them flinch with Lycanroc's Splintered Stormshards. After Blacephalon and Xurkitree were captured, they were released back to their respective homes.

In All They Want to Do is Dance Dance!, Mallow and Steenee started practicing for a Pokémon dance in class. When the day of the dance came, Mallow and the others were captured by Team Rocket, except for Steenee, who was doing some last-minute practicing. Mallow witnessed Steenee learn Stomp and subsequently evolve into Tsareena. Thanks to Tsareena, the group was freed and Team Rocket was sent blasting off.

In The Long Vault Home!, Mallow and her classmates were sent on an Ultra Guardians mission to capture the Ultra Beast Stakataka. They found it lying motionless in the middle of a field at the Pokémon School. The Ultra Guardians' attempts to capture Stakataka all failed as it easily dodged all of their thrown Beast Balls, forcing them to give up and try again later. The next day, they found that Stakataka had left the Pokémon School and moved to the construction site of a resort Viren was building. Viren, mistaking the Rampart Pokémon for a statue stand, glued a golden statue of himself onto Stakataka, causing it to go berserk in an attempt to get the statue off. With the assistance of Kiawe's Turtonator, Ash made it on top of Stakataka and had Pikachu knock the statue off, calming it down. Afterwards, Stakataka happily agreed to be caught and was then returned to its home.

In Filling the Light with Darkness!, mysterious dark clouds appeared over the Alola region, causing all of the adults in Alola to lose their energy and motivation. The next day, Mallow and her classmates embarked on their fifth mission to investigate the situation at the Altar of the Sunne. Shortly after arriving, Lusamine revealed that Gladion would be joining them as a new member. In order to disperse the clouds, Ash, Kiawe, Lana, and Gladion combined their Z-Power to fuel a device that successfully made the clouds disappear, but they uncovered a hidden Ultra Wormhole in the process. Afterwards, Lusamine took the Ultra Guardians into the ruins, where she showed them a mural depicting the Blinding One. Before any attempt to translate the mural could be done, the Ultra Guardians were forced to return outside, where they found the wormhole increasing in size. At that moment, a Lunala emerged from the wormhole with a Necrozma chasing after it.

In Full Moon and Many Arms!, Lusamine's group came to the conclusion that Necrozma was the cause of the Alolan adults' loss of energy. Realizing that Necrozma intended on draining Lunala's Ultra Aura in order to possess it, Lusamine sent the Ultra Guardians off to protect Lunala. The Ultra Guardians chased Necrozma to Melemele Island, where they fought alongside Lunala to drive Necrozma away. Despite their best efforts, Necrozma easily shrugged off the Ultra Guardians' attacks and eventually took over Lunala's body to become Dawn Wings Necrozma. Soon afterwards, an elite Team Rocket group known as the Matori Matrix appeared and attempted to capture Necrozma, only for it to easily break free from their electrified net.

After the Matori Matrix retreated, Nebby appeared from a wormhole and fought alongside the Ultra Guardians to free Lunala. With its Sunsteel Strike, Nebby successfully knocked Necrozma off of Lunala, causing it the former to fall into the ocean below. The Matori Matrix returned in order to capture Nebby and Lunala, though the two Legendary Pokémon were freed by Ash's Pikachu and Gladion's Silvally. The distraction allowed Necrozma to return and possess Nebby instead, causing it to become Dusk Mane Necrozma. Ash tried to free Nebby, but was unable to stop Necrozma from escaping into an Ultra Wormhole. With Necrozma gone, the adults of Alola were restored to their normal selves and the injured Lunala was taken to the Ultra Guardians base to recuperate. When the Ultra Guardians expressed their determination to rescue Nebby, their Z-Rings began shining a light that went into Lunala, healing it in the process.

In The Prism Between Light and Darkness!, the Ultra Guardians and Lunala traveled through an Ultra Wormhole and arrived at Poipole's home world. While Lunala went off ahead to face Necrozma, the others stayed behind and were introduced to Poipole's friends and the leader of its hive, Naganadel. With its telepathy, Naganadel revealed to everyone how Necrozma lost its light protecting the world from a meteor, causing everything to become barren and shrouded in darkness. Realizing that Necrozma is actually the Blinding One, the group decided to help Necrozma by giving it their Z-Power in the hopes that it would release Nebby, regain its true form, and bring light back to Poipole's world. After heading to where Lunala and Necrozma were fighting, Ash, Kiawe, Lana, and Gladion fired simultaneous Z-Moves at the Prism Pokémon.

Mallow saying goodbye to her mother

In Securing the Future!, the combined Z-Moves were absorbed by Necrozma, but it wasn't enough to get it to release Nebby. After informing Lusamine's group of the situation, the Ultra Guardians learned that, in the tale of Alola's creation, the people and Pokémon of Alola assisted Solgaleo and Lunala in restoring Necrozma's light by sharing their Z-Power with it. Together, the Ultra Guardians, their Pokémon, Lunala, Poipole's comrades, and everyone else back in Alola shared their Z-Power with Necrozma, causing to release Nebby. Afterwards, Ash and Nebby used Searing Sunraze Smash, while Gladion and Lunala used Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom on Necrozma. The combined Z-Moves fully restored Necrozma's light, giving it the strength to become its true form, Ultra Necrozma, and restore Poipole's home world back to its original state. Afterwards, the Ultra Guardians, Nebby, and Lunala traveled back to Alola through the Ultra Wormhole.

In SM104, Mallow and her classmates arrived on Poni Island for their individual research projects for school. Her research project was to focused on how to make daikon-based dishes. In SM107, Mallow succeeded in making the daikon-based dishes. She eventually brought them to Hapu for her to taste.

In SM108, Mallow became depressed after learning of Tapu Fini's ability to reunite people with the souls of the deceased. After being comforted by Lana, Mallow admitted she didn't want to see her mother, as she felt guilty about declaring her hatred of her shortly before she passed away. Later, at Hapu's house, Tapu Fini filled the area with mist, causing Mallow to get separated from the others. Mallow was visited by the spirit of her mother, and promptly apologized to her for her past actions. After the mist cleared and her mother's spirit faded away, Mallow encountered a wild Shaymin, which had been attracted to the feelings of gratitude Mallow expressed during her apology, and decided to take it in until it was time for it to fly off.

In SM114, Mallow and her classmates were sent on an Ultra Guardians mission to capture the Ultra Beast Pheromosa, which had been stealing Z-Crystals from various Trainers. TRMeowth ([[{{{2}}} (move)|{{{2}}}]]), who had fallen for Pheromosa, lured the Ultra Guardians to it, allowing Pheromosa to take one of Ash's Z-Crystals. After consulting Lusamine's group, the Ultra Guardians tried to capture Pheromosa with a glue trap, only for Meowth to see through the plan and get caught himself. Bewear, angry that Pheromosa hurt Team Rocket during the battle, fought and easily defeated the Lissome Pokémon, allowing the Ultra Guardians to catch it. After Pheromosa was released back to its home world, the Ultra Guardians returned the stolen Z-Crystals back to their owners.

Character

Mallow excited to see Grass-type Pokémon

Mallow is an upbeat and friendly girl who gets along well with her classmates at the Pokémon School. She admits herself to be so energetic that she sometimes misses important details and jumps to the wrong conclusions. She is shown to have a firm sense of right and wrong, such as her distaste for Team Skull's bullying of other students. Much like Brock, Cilan, and Clemont, she is also a talented cook for both people and Pokémon, and as such is a self-proclaimed poster girl at her family's restaurant, Aina's Kitchen.

Mallow is shown to be very good friends with Lillie. This was demonstrated in Lillie's Egg-xhilarating Challenge!, when she completed her chores early and headed over to see how she was getting on with the Egg; in Getting to Know You!, when she dragged Ash along to see how she and Snowy were getting along; and in Lulled to La-La Land!, when she defended Lillie after Rotom accused her of being the culprit for making everyone hungry.

Mallow is also supportive of Lana. This was demonstrated in They Might Not Be Giants!, when she showed up to watch how Popplio's balloons were doing and explained to Rotom why Lana was acting the way she was whenever she was separated from Popplio. This was seen again in Balloons, Brionne, and Belligerence!, when she showed up to watch how her and Popplio perform Hydro Vortex.

Mallow is shown to be a fan of Grass-type Pokémon, as evident in Alola, Kanto!, when she excitedly greeted a Vileplume and two Gloom and called them cute. Mallow has shown to be secretive of what had happened to her mother, as shown in Alolan Open House!, where she lied about both of her parents being busy and in Night of a Thousand Poses! where she talked about Sima, when her other classmates talked about their own mothers. In SM108, it is revealed that she harbors deep regret for snapping at her mother shortly before her mother passed away from an illness. It is also shown that Mallow only speaks to Lana about her mother's death. At the end of the episode, Mallow overcomes her guilt when she is briefly reunited with her mother's spirit in Tapu Fini's mist.
