Malamar (Japanese: カラマネロ Calamanero) was a recurring wild Pokémon in the anime that plotted to rule the world.

History

Malamar first appeared in A Conspiracy to Conquer!. Prior to the episode, Malamar had set up its hideout at a radio observatory near Camphrier Town. It also hypnotized an Officer Jenny who went to investigate a radio observatory near. As a result, she became "Madame X". Together, they confronted Team Rocket and hypnotized them, but Meowth scratched his face and later informed Ash and his friends. With Team Rocket in tow, Malamar located Ash's group by a tree. It then kidnapped Pikachu, hoping to use his power to lead its Pokémon army, the Pokémon Patrol, and aid in its plans for world domination.

By the time Ash, his friends, and Meowth arrived in the observation chamber of the radio observatory, Malamar cruelly took control of Clemont, Bonnie, and Serena. The Automatic Pikachu Retrieving Device that Clemont built earlier entered the observatory and crashed into Malamar, breaking its control over everyone it had hypnotized. Malamar revealed that it tricked them into believing that Madame X was the real person behind everything, but it was a cover for its true intentions – to build a mind control machine to reconstruct the world. Malamar led the group to its "grand design" room, and destroyed it before fleeing.

Malamar with its two fellow Malamar

Malamar reappeared in Facing the Grand Design! where it had recruited two other Malamar in a plan to distort the world using energy crystals. Malamar and the other two hypnotized the top Scientists of Kalos to build the energy crystals, and later transported them to Grace Tower. When Team Rocket went to the top of Grace Tower, the Malamar trio spotted them after Inkay became furious at the one particular Malamar for what it did to them previously. Team Rocket encounter Ash's group and the Officer Jenny from the radio observatory, and they attempted to carry out a plan to disrupt Malamar's latest scheme.

Later, the Malamar used Psychic to immobilize Ash, Serena, Bonnie, Jessie and Officer, leaving Clemont, Meowth, James and Inkay to save the day. Malamar and the other two were defeated after being subdued by James's Inkay, several other Malamar and Inkay. The crystals were deactivated by Officer Jenny's Manectric. Despite their defeat and Officer Jenny pointing it out, all of the crystals combined into one and the evil Malamar went in them as a method of escape, allowing all three of them to avoid capture and thus destroying any evidence of their plan. Before they left, they claimed they were heading into the future but swore they would return to fight once more and their plan would succeed someday.

Personality and characteristics

Unlike most Pokémon, Malamar is a cruel and evil Pokémon with a mysterious dark past. Malamar maybe the mastermind of its world domination strategy, but is aware of its limitations and surrounds itself with others to avoid direct confrontation. Manipulation and deceit are key to Malamar's plans: Officer Jenny was used as a mouth piece, while Jessie and James provided Malamar with crucial insight.

It enjoys control, using Hypnosis to manipulate a person or Pokémon's mind and Psychic to physically move its pawns around. Despite its overwhelming powers and menacing persona, Trainers with a strong bond with their Pokémon such as Ash and Pikachu or James with Inkay are able to break free of Malamar's hypnotic control, or by inflicting pain on themselves as seen in Meowth's case.

The three evil Malamar showed no signs of remorse, guilt, or redemption after their plans were stopped by Ash and his friends. Failure appears to be merely a part of the process in amongst a confusing game of psychology, theatrics and fragmented lies.
