Pokémon the Movie 3 - Spell of the Unown (Japanese: 結晶塔の帝王 ＥＮＴＥＩ Emperor of the Crystal Tower: Entei; officially Lord of the "Unknown" Tower in Japan) is the 3rd Pokémon movie, and 3rd of all Pokémon movies. It debuted in Japanese theaters on July 8, 2000. It then made its way to North American theaters on April 6, 2001.

Spell of the Unown was shown with the Pikachu short movie, Pikachu and Pichu.

Synopsis

The feature film focuses on the beautiful town of Greenfield. Living in the town is Professor Spencer Hale, a research scientist who is researching on the elusive Unown. He and his assistant, Skyler, discover a site of ruins but Hale is sucked into the dimension of the Unown, soon after Professor Hale's disappearance Skyler arrives back in Greenfield, He speaks with a man in the mansion and Molly comes rushing down to see Her Father. Molly is told the news by Skyler and goes downstairs in shock and sadness, She goes on her father's laptop trying to find out what happend, but soon she sees the box her father discovered in the ruins, and she sees all the Unown shapes, assuming they are letters, she spells, Mama, Papa and Molly, and the Unown come to life from the blocks and start making her dream world a reality, Skyler comes rushing in the main hall where She is but the Unown seal the door in ice, then Molly starts wishing Her father was there and the Unown bring Entei) to her making him think Molly is his child, they pan out and we see the new Greenfield, and the movie starts.

Meanwhile, Ash Ketchum and his friends have landed into Greenfield in the process and agree to join in the rescue mission to save young Molly. However, Entei kidnaps Delia, following Molly's request for a mother as well. Through Entei's powers, Delia is hypnotized into thinking she is Molly's mother and ends up being kidnapped. Ash, Misty, Brock and their Pokémon head out to the mansion to save Delia, communicating with Professor Oak and Skyler thanks to a Pokégear device given to them by a Pokémon trainer named Lisa. Team Rocket try to investigate the mansion only to be blasted out of the air by Entei into the depths of the mansion. Molly watches Ash and the others through a television and falls asleep, imagining herself being a Pokémon Trainer. Entei creates a dream version of Molly as an adult trainer and takes her to battle the three. She first fights Brock but her dreamed-up Pokémon are stronger then his, and then she has a more friendlier fight against Misty in an underwater battle but the winner is not shown.

Ash manages to locate Molly and Delia, but Molly refuses to leave with him and the mansion transforms. Entei refuses to allow Ash to leave with his mother, and fights his Pokémon. He then blasts Ash and Pikachu off a cliff, but they are saved by the arrival of Ash's Charizard. Charizard with Ash on his back, battles Entei until he is knocked out of the sky. Entei nearly kills Charizard until Molly commands him to stop and begs that no more fighting happens, which manages to stop Entei. Ash and his friends convince Molly to leave with them, Entei revealing he was created by the Unown to be her father.

The Unown suddenly lose control of their powers and start to seal the group in the mansion. Ash, Pikachu, Charizard, Misty, Brock, Delia, Molly and Team Rocket escape down to the hall where the Unown are. Pikachu and Charizard attempt to break the forcefield protecting the Unown, but they are joined by Entei, combining their powers to destroy the shield with Molly's support. Entei sacrifices himself and the Unown return to their dimension, reversing all of their effects on the world and returning Professor Hale to the ruins where he vanished.

The group venture outside where Professor Oak, Skyler, Lisa and others meet them. Team Rocket hide in the mansion upon seeing all of the police outside and vow they will succeed or fail in their next scheme. In the end credits, Charizard and Lisa depart from Ash's company, and Molly is seen with her own Teddiursa and is reunited with her father, and later, her mother.

• This movie premièred in Japan between the episodes The Forest Grumps and The Psychic Sidekicks. Judging by the storyline, it takes place after Fowl Play, because Ash's Noctowl is present, but before Hassle In The Castle, because Brock's Golbat is still a Zubat, so its première took place in proper time.
• The movie's title, Spell of the Unown, refers to both the fact that the crystal covering much of Greenfield is made by a spell that the Unown have made, but as well that Unown are able to be used to literally spell out words and phrases, which Molly does with the tiles.
• Some of the Unown that appear on Professor Oak's computer are, as of yet, unreleased. However, since they're just drawings, it is possible that they don't really exist in the Pokémon world.
• This is the only original series movie not to feature a Template:Type2 legendary Pokémon as the main Pokémon.
• Jessie and James break the fourth wall twice during the movie: first they do so when they sneak past Misty and Molly battling against each other, by asking if they'd have more important a role in the next movie, and again when saving Ash from falling, by saying that without him they wouldn't be in show business.
  • Ironically, concerning the first instance of breaking the fourth wall, Team Rocket had a minor role in the fourth movie.
• Professor Oak's computer's task-bar area features Energy symbols from the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
• At the end James holds a rose for the first time in several seasons.
• In the UK airings of this movie, the line of dialogue where Molly tells her Flaaffy to use Headbutt is removed (however the shot of Flaaffy using the attack is left intact).
• This is the first movie where an evolution of Dratini is not shown. Dragonite appears before Ash, Misty, and Brock in Mewtwo Strikes Back, and in Pikachu's Rescue Adventure, which is shown before The Power of One, the storm is stopped by a Dragonair.
  • On the same note, this is the first movie not to feature a storm.
    • Also to note, this is the only movie thus far that only has one legendary Pokémon present in it.

Errors

• For some reason, the report from Prof. Hale about the Unown contains numerous mistakes. Not only is the species spelled as "Unknown", but many obvious spelling and grammar mistakes are made. It seems to be a rough translation of Japanese.
• Unown is in Molly's book of legendary Pokémon, though it is not explicitly legendary in the games.
• In the DVD commentary, Michael Haigney incorrectly states that Entei can talk due to it being a Fire/Psychic Pokémon. Entei is actually a pure Fire-type, while its ability to talk was given by the Unown.
• In the Brazilian Portuguese dub, Misty states that she was the Vermilion Gym Leader, instead of Cerulean Gym Leader.

Dub edits

• Originally, the scene where Spencer Hale returns from the Unown world was part of the end credits. For the dub, this scene was moved after Greenfield was restored and before the scene where Ash, Pikachu, Misty, Brock, Charizard and Molly come out from the mansion after Greenfield's restoration (the 4Kids staff stated that they did this because western audiences tend to leave the theaters without watching the closing credits. Therefore the producers were worried that if the audience did leave before watching the credits, then they would assume the film ended with Molly still being left as an orphan).
• In the original, Spencer Hale's wife left him due to his obsession with discovering the secrets of the Unown. However, in the dub, her absence was explained as her having gone missing while studying the Unown.
