Kotone speaking with Gold

Kotone (Japanese: コトネ Kotone) is the female player character in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. In these remakes of Pokémon Gold and Silver Versions, she is the counterpart to Gold, taking over the role from Kris in the original games. Her hometown is New Bark Town; she lives there with her mother.

Kotone can be seen talking with Gold in New Bark Town at the start of the game. In this particular scene, she is seen with a Marill. It is unknown if she will always have Marill or if the Pokémon will change if another starter Pokémon is selected. Her role in the storyline of HeartGold and SoulSilver will be similar to that of Lucas/Dawn in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum if they are not chosen as the player character, while Gold will presumably take this place if she is selected as the player.

Trivia

  • Much like Silver received the fan name "Kamon" from the list of Gold's names in Pokémon Silver for discerning purposes, Kotone was known by much of the fandom as "Soul", following the precedent of Red's female counterpart introduced in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Interestingly, Gold was the only one who appeared in-game in demos with the name Soul: Kotone's name was in fact "Heart" (though likewise, Leaf was a default name for Red in LeafGreen, and Fire and Red default names for Leaf in FireRed).
  • Kotone strongly resembles Super Mario, as a result, many have given her the nickname "Maria".
  • Previously to the announcement of Kotone's name in 6 September 2009's episode of Pokémon Sunday, she was seen by many fans as an updated form of Kris, rather than a new character; the announcement of her name, however, means that the developers do intend to distinguish her from her Pokémon Crystal counterpart.
