Lucario (Japanese: ルカリオ Lucario) is a Fighting/Steel-type Pokémon.

Lucario evolves from Riolu by leveling up during the day if its Happiness has reached a certain point.

Biology

Physiology

Lucario is a bipedal, jackal-like Pokémon that's around four feet in height. Lucario's forepaws are now black and the rounded bumps on the back are now pointed spikes. In addition, there's a third spike on Lucario's chest. Lucario's snout and ears have also grown longer since its evolution from Riolu. Lucario also now has a yellow torso.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Lucario are sensitive to a special type of energy called aura. Lucario can study these waves to predict the movements of their opponents, and use them to track anyone. They can also guide the waves offensively to create explosive balls of aura energy (such as Aura Sphere, one of only two non-legendaries to learn that move). Lucario are also able understand human speech; some people say that Lucario can also speak it, though only one has reportedly done so.

Behavior

Habitat

Lucario usually live deep in mountains far from people to improve their skills.

Diet

The Lucario in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew was shown eating berries and was introduced to chocolate by Max.

In the anime

Lucario in the anime

In the Pokémon movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Lucario is considered a legend from olden times to the town where it appears in front of Ash Ketchum and his friends, and mistakes Ash for its old friend Sir Aaron due to his similar aura.

Lucario also makes a cameo in the theme songs Battle Frontier and Together.

Lucario's first appearance in an actual episode was in DP066, under the ownership of Maylene.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Special manga, like in games, it appears under the ownership of Riley

Lucario in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Lucario is a playable character. It is unlocked by encountering it in The Subspace Emissary either from choosing it to battle and claim victory over Meta Knight or vice-versa. It can also be unlocked by playing 100 brawls or beating Target Smash!! on all difficulty levels (in either 1 or 2-player modes). Lucario also appears to be able to talk, while using his Final Smash he says "Watch the power of Aura." Lucario's fighting style revolves around aura manipulation and the concept of "high risk, high return"; the more damage Lucario has taken, the more it can deal. Its power is at its peak when it has taken 200% damage, and is in last place during a fight.

  • Mei Ling: "You're fighting Lucario, aren't you, Snake?"
  • Solid Snake: "Mei Ling, what's that purple fire coming out of his hands??"
  • Mei Ling: "That's his 'Aura.'"
  • Solid Snake: "Aura?"
  • Mei Ling: "I guess you could call it his life force. Lucario can use his own Aura and turn it into power. Every time Lucario's damage increases, his Aura gains strength, making his attacks more powerful. So don't think you've got him beat just because his health is down."
  • Solid Snake: "The cornered rat will bite the cat... Sounds like trouble."
  • Mei Ling: "Hey! When did you become so good with proverbs?!"
  • Solid Snake: "You must have rubbed off on me."
  • Mei Ling: "Well, come back in one piece, and I'll teach you all the Chinese proverbs you can handle."

Trophy information

Classic Mode: Lucario

An Aura Pokémon. It can track energy called Aura, which is given off by all living creatures. It's a unique combination of both Fighting- and Steel-types. Lucario evolves from Riolu during the day if its happiness has reached a certain point. It specializes in attacks that use Aura energy, like Dark Pulse and a can't-miss technique, Aura Sphere.

All-Star Mode: Aura Storm

Lucario's Final Smash. After flying off the screen, Lucario reappears in its center. It then launches a powerful Aura attack against all foes within a certain distance. The key to this attack is the ability to change its angle--it's a must to sweep slowly left and right to his selected enemies multiple times. The last blow will send the victim flying away.

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Lucario is seen as the greatest rescue leader of all time, and his adventures have become legendary. While the player never meets Lucario, Alakazam tells the player that his goal is to become closer to Lucario's greatness. Earning 15,000 Rescue Points will put the player in the top rank - the Lucario rank - at which point the Lucario statue will be displayed outside the rescue base.

Trivia

Origin

Lucario appears to be based on the Egyptian god Anubis, who has the head of a jackal. It also seems to be based on an Egyptian boxer. Boxing is a sport that is believed to have origins in Egypt. The black appendages on the back of its head are used to detect the auras of creatures and objects around it. While Lucario reads aura, it closes its eyes, and thus the appendages and the way they look "tied" around its face appear to be based on someone being blindfolded.

Name origin

Lucario's name may be orikaru said syllabicly-backwards, which is Japanese for oracle. It may also be a reference to Cairo, Egypt. The "lu" may come from "lupine," meaning "wolf," in reference to its canine-like appearance.
