A bug involving Clefairy's nickname occurs if the serial code is redeemed on a Korean language game. Clefairy's origin language will be set to Japanese, but it is set to have no nickname, causing the game to assign it Clefairy's species name in Korean. Since its origin language and nickname don't match typesets, Clefairy's nickname will display as "??" when redeemed in this language. | A bug involving Clefairy's nickname occurs if the serial code is redeemed on a Korean language game. Revision as of 20:27, 29 January 2023
This is a reverse-chronological list of event Pokémon distributions that were given away via the Code/Password or the Poké Ball Plus mystery gift functions to Pokémon games in Generation VIII. A subscription to Nintendo Switch Online is not required to claim Mystery Gifts on Nintendo Switch games.
Serial "codes" are one-time use codes. "Passwords" are codes that can be used by any number of people, but are usually limited to one redemption per save file.

Mythical 2022 Pokémon
These Pokémon were distributed to promote the Lost Origin set of the Pokémon TCG at various retailers in select western countries. If redeemed in an Asian language game (Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese), these Pokémon redeemed with English language tags instead. Except for in Canada or the United States, each pamphlet had 3 printed codes, for each of the three Pokémon. In Canada and the United States, the distribution was staggered with Genesect and Volcanion available on a single code card and Marshadow being distributed on a separate card later.
In Europe the codes were distributed from September 9 to 30, 2022 and expire on December 31, 2022 at 07:59 (UTC). In the Americans and Oceania, codes were distributed from varying dates between October 16 and November 12, these codes expire on January 1, 2023 at 7:59 (UTC).

Pokémon Center Otsukimi Clefairy
This Clefairy was distributed via serial code to players of all Generation VIII games at the Pokémon Centers in Japan from September 3 to 11, 2022 in commemoration of the Otsukimi festival in Japan. A pamphlet with three serial codes could be obtained during the distribution period, but in order to obtain it, the recipient must imitate the move Metronome. The codes are single-use; one of the codes on the pamphlet is valid for Sword and Shield, the second is for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and the last is for Legends: Arceus. The codes expired on September 30, 2022.
Due to a printing issue, the code cards only had the randomised 12 digit serial code and omitted the 4 character prefix. For the first Sword and Shield code the prefix J256 should be used before inputting the remaining 12 character code. The Second Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl code has the prefix J257. The third Legends: Arceus code's prefix is J258.

Pokémon Get Challenge 2020 Pokémon
These Pokémon were distributed to players who entered the codes from the "Mythical Pokémon Get Challenge" (Japanese: 幻のポケモンゲットチャレンジ) onto the official site in exchange for a serial code. Pokémon Scraps could be found in participating types of Pokémon merchandise starting on November 20, 2020.
The number of codes entered determined what type of serial code was received; one Pokémon Scrap resulted in a Genesect code, five resulted in a code for ten pieces of Dynite Ore, ten resulted in a code for Poké Ball Set 1 (consisting of a Fast Ball, a Level Ball, and a Love Ball), 13 resulted in a Volcanion code, 16 resulted in a code for ten pieces of Dynite Ore, 20 resulted in a code for Poké Ball Set 2 (consisting of a Moon Ball, a Heavy Ball, a Friend Ball, and a Lure Ball), 23 resulted in a Marshadow code, 27 resulted in a code for Poké Ball Set 3 (consisting of a Safari Ball and a Sport Ball), and 30 resulted in a Master Ball code. The serial codes could be redeemed from November 20, 2020 to April 30, 2021.

Japan Pokémon Center Birthday Milcery
These Milcery were distributed via serial code to players of Pokémon Sword and Shield at Pokémon Center stores and Pokémon Stores in Japan from November 1, 2020 until October 31, 2021, if they visited during the month of their birthday, but only if they provided proof of their date of birth and Nintendo Switch.
As both Pokémon share the same Wonder Card ID, only one of the two Milcery (either holding a Ribbon Sweet or a Star Sweet) could be redeemed on a single save file.
Before November 6, 2020, the Wonder Card did not set a nickname for Milcery, causing a bug if the serial code is redeemed on a Korean, Traditional Chinese, or Simplified Chinese language game. Milcery's origin language would be set to Japanese, but since it had no nickname, the game would assign it Milcery's species name in Korean/Traditional Chinese/Simplified Chinese. Since its origin language and nickname did not match typesets (Japanese-language Pokémon cannot have Korean/Chinese nicknames), Milcery's nickname would display as "???" on the save file. This was fixed by replacing the Wonder Card with another version with the same ID, that directly set Milcery's nickname to マホミル (Milcery's species name in Japanese).

They included a Shiny Celebi and a Zarude, both Pokémon that play important roles in the movie. Celebi's distribution was originally due to begin on April 17, 2020 and Zarude's on June 15, 2020; due to the delay of the movie's release, both distributions instead began on August 7 and were redeemable until March 31, 2021. Multiple redemptions of these Pokémon are allowed on a single game, provided the player had preordered multiple tickets and consequently had multiple serial codes.
Additionally, the Dada Zarude was distributed from December 25, 2020 to March 31, 2021 to players who watched the movie in Japanese movie theatres.
The Shiny Celebi and Dada Zarude were re-released in Taiwan between December 10, 2021 and March 31, 2022 to promote the release of the movie in this market.

Poké Ball Plus Mew
Initially released with Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, the Poké Ball Plus comes programmed with an internal serial code to redeem this Mew that is compatible with Pokémon Sword and Shield. Despite being marketed as the Poké Ball Plus "containing" Mew, the serial code aspect means that to claim Mew, the player must connect to the Internet through Mystery Gift.
The serial code aspect also means that it is impossible for a single manufactured Poké Ball Plus to redeem more than one Mew, even if the Poké Ball Plus is later resold. Players that purchased multiple Poké Ball Pluses can redeem one Mew for each.
