Lana (Japanese: スイレン Suiren) is a student at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island and one of Ash's classmates. She made her debut in Alola to New Adventure!.

History

Lana when she was younger

Lana lives with her parents and twin sisters Harper and Sarah. Prior to enrolling to the Pokémon School, Lana first met Mallow when they were younger and instantly became best friends. Years later, Lana rescued a wild Popplio from being harassed by a gang of Team Skull Grunts and nursed it back to health at a Pokémon Center. Immediately afterwards, the two became good friends and partners.

Lana debuted in Alola to New Adventure!, meeting Ash and Pikachu while fishing with Popplio on a Ride Lapras. She and Ash met again at the Pokémon School, where Ash decided to join her class to study the Pokémon of Alola under their teacher, Professor Kukui.

In The Guardian's Challenge!, Lana participated in the surprise welcome party her class threw for Ash to celebrate his enrollment. She challenged Ash to a Pokémon swimming contest as his third "surprise", which Popplio won due to its superior swimming ability. She later bore witness to Ash and Pikachu's battle against Tapu Koko, the guardian deity of Melemele.

In Yo, Ho, Ho! Go, Popplio!, Lana received help from Ash while training Popplio how to blow human-sized water balloons, revealing her dream to one day use them to explore the ocean depths and discover new undersea Pokémon. She was also chosen to give a class lecture on sea Pokémon, loaning Ash a fishing rod at her house and introducing him to her sisters. During the lecture, the class's Ride Pokémon were caught in a net by Team Rocket, who infuriated Lana with their disregard for the other Pokémon they had inadvertently caught. Together with Ash, she was able to bring the captured Pokémon to safety by using Popplio's water balloons.

In Treasure Hunt, Akala Style!, Lana found a Sparkling Stone during one of her treasure hunts with a Poké Ride Stoutland on Akala Island, which Olivia took in order to turn it into a Z-Ring for Lana.

Lana's Z-Ring and Waterium Z

In Big Sky, Small Fry!, Lana took part in a trial at Brooklet Hill where she earned a Waterium Z from battling a Totem Wishiwashi with Popplio. Near the end of the episode, Olivia gave the Z-Ring to Lana, which she had just successfully converted from the Sparkling Stone.

In Balloons, Brionne, and Belligerence!, Lana and Popplio were practicing their Z-Move at the beach with Ash and Mallow, but were unsuccessful. Nearby, they noticed a crowd watching a performer named Ida with her Brionne. Lana was intrigued and insisted Ida to be her tutor. They then trained for days. One day when they were out in the sea looking for treasure with Ida and Kanoa, they got in trouble with a Dhelmise. Lana and Popplio then attempted Hydro Vortex again and succeeded, defeating the anchor Pokémon in the process.

In Alola, Kanto!, Lana joins her classmates for a trip to Kanto. While there, Lana meets Misty and Brock as they used to travel with Ash. In When Regions Collide!, Lana teams up with Mallow for a Multi Battle against Misty. However, the battle was called with no winner.

From Family Determination! to 10,000,000 Reasons to Fight!, Lana was among those who helped Lillie and Gladion in their mission to rescue their mother Lusamine after Lusamine was kidnapped by the Ultra Beast Nihilego. In Ultra Deep Sea, her Popplio, along with Ash's Litten and Rowlet, and Mallow and Sophocles's Pokémon, fought and overcame Lusamine's Mismagius, Milotic, and Lilligant, which were under Nihilego's control. During the battle, Lana and Popplio used Hydro Vortex on Mismagius. The battle ended when Ash and Pikachu performed 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt to defeat Nihilego, freeing Lusamine from its grasp.

In The Professors' New Adventure!, Lana attended the wedding of Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet. During the post-nuptials, Lusamine asked Lana and her classmates to join the Ultra Guardians, a task force dedicated to dealing with any upcoming Ultra Beast incidents, which they accepted.

Lana in her Ultra Guardian uniform

In A Mission of Ultra Urgency!, Lana and her classmates set out on their first Ultra Guardians mission. They were tasked with capturing a Buzzwole that emerged from an Ultra Wormhole onto Melemele Island, where it began causing havoc. During the mission, Lana helped heal a wild Snorlax that was drained of its energy by the Ultra Beast. Eventually, Buzzwole was distracted by Kiawe's flexing long enough for Ash to capture it in a Beast Ball. Afterward, Buzzwole was released and returned to its home thanks to a wormhole opened by Lusamine's team.

In Rise and Shine, Starship!, Lana and her classmates traveled to Bamboo Hill to see a mysterious creature that Sophocles had discovered the night before. Together, the group unsuccessfully tried to dig it up. The next day, Lusamine revealed the creature was actually an Ultra Beast named Celesteela and set the Ultra Guardians off to return it back home. Attempts to catch Celesteela in a Beast Ball proved unsuccessful as it was firmly rooted down. Team Rocket later attempted to catch Celesteela, forcing the Ultra Guardians to protect it as Celesteela began to launch into the air. After creating an area for Celesteela to launch safely without setting the immediate area ablaze, they watched it fly home.

In Dewpider Ascending!, a wild Dewpider ended up falling for Lana after seeing her with one of Popplio's water bubbles on her head. Later, when the Dewpider fought a Surskit for the ownership of a pond near the Pokémon School, Lana encouraged it to keep fighting. Despite this, the Surskit won the battle, causing to evolve into a Masquerain. Happy with its new form, Masquerain abandoned the pond, allowing Dewpider to make the area its new home.

Lana and her family

In Twirling with a Bang!, Lana and her classmates watched a fireworks show. The show was interrupted by a strange creature that used its exploding head to create a fireworks show of its own. The next day, the Ultra Guardians were called down by Lusamine, who revealed the creature from before was the Ultra Beast Blacephalon. The Ultra Guardians set off to find Blacephalon, but their efforts to track it down only led to a different Ultra Beast, later named Xurkitree by Lusamine. When Blacephalon and Xurkitree met, they began doing flashy performances in an attempt to outdo the other. Worried that serious trouble could arise if the competition kept escalating, the Ultra Guardians combined the attacks of their partner and Ride Pokémon into a giant firework that distracted the Ultra Beasts long enough for Ash to make them flinch with Lycanroc's Splintered Stormshards. Together, Lana managed to catch Xurkitree while Lillie caught Blacephalon, allowing the two Ultra Beasts to be later released back to their homes.

In The Long Vault Home!, Lana and her classmates were sent on an Ultra Guardians mission to capture the Ultra Beast Stakataka. They found it lying motionless in the middle of a field at the Pokémon School. The Ultra Guardians' attempts to capture Stakataka all failed as it easily dodged all of their thrown Beast Balls, forcing them to give up and try again later. The next day, they found that Stakataka had left the Pokémon School and moved to the construction site of a resort Viren was building. Viren, mistaking the Rampart Pokémon for a statue stand, glued a golden statue of himself onto Stakataka, causing it to go berserk in an attempt to get the statue off. With the assistance of Kiawe's Turtonator, Ash made it on top of Stakataka and had Pikachu knock the statue off, calming it down. Afterwards, Stakataka happily agreed to be captured and was then returned to its home.

In Filling the Light with Darkness!, mysterious dark clouds appeared over the Alola region, causing all of the adults in Alola to lose their energy and motivation. The next day, Lana and her classmates embarked on their fifth mission to investigate the situation at the Altar of the Sunne. Shortly after arriving, Lusamine revealed that Gladion would be joining them as a new member. In order to disperse the clouds, Lana, Ash, Kiawe, and Gladion combined their Z-Power to fuel a device that successfully made the clouds disappear, but they uncovered a hidden Ultra Wormhole in the process. Afterwards, Lusamine took the Ultra Guardians into the ruins, where she showed them a mural depicting the Blinding One. Before any attempt to translate the mural could be done, the Ultra Guardians were forced to return outside, where they found the wormhole increasing in size. At that moment, a Lunala emerged from the wormhole with a Necrozma chasing after it.

In Full Moon and Many Arms!, Lusamine's group came to the conclusion that Necrozma was the cause of the Alolan adults' loss of energy. Realizing that Necrozma intended on draining Lunala's Ultra Aura in order to possess it, Lusamine sent the Ultra Guardians off to protect Lunala. The Ultra Guardians chased Necrozma to Melemele Island, where they fought alongside Lunala to drive Necrozma away. Despite their best efforts, Necrozma easily shrugged off the Ultra Guardians' attacks and eventually took over Lunala's body to become Dawn Wings Necrozma. Soon afterwards, an elite Team Rocket group known as the Matori Matrix appeared and attempted to capture Necrozma, only for it to easily break free from their electrified net.

After the Matori Matrix retreated, Nebby appeared from a wormhole and fought alongside the Ultra Guardians to free Lunala. With its Sunsteel Strike, Nebby successfully knocked Necrozma off of Lunala, causing it the former to fall into the ocean below. The Matori Matrix returned in order to capture Nebby and Lunala, though the two Legendary Pokémon were freed by Ash's Pikachu and Gladion's Silvally. The distraction allowed Necrozma to return and possess Nebby instead, causing it to become Dusk Mane Necrozma. Ash tried to free Nebby, but was unable to stop Necrozma from escaping into an Ultra Wormhole. With Necrozma gone, the adults of Alola were restored to their normal selves and the injured Lunala was taken to the Ultra Guardians base to recuperate. When the Ultra Guardians expressed their determination to rescue Nebby, their Z-Rings began shining a light that went into Lunala, healing it in the process.

Lana after catching a Pokémon

In The Prism Between Light and Darkness!, the Ultra Guardians and Lunala traveled through an Ultra Wormhole and arrived at Poipole's home world. While Lunala went off ahead to face Necrozma, the others stayed behind and were introduced to Poipole's friends and the leader of its hive, Naganadel. With its telepathy, Naganadel revealed to everyone how Necrozma lost its light protecting the world from a meteor, causing everything to become barren and shrouded in darkness. Realizing that Necrozma is actually the Blinding One, the group decided to help Necrozma by giving it their Z-Power in the hopes that it would release Nebby, regain its true form, and bring light back to Poipole's world. After heading to where Lunala and Necrozma were fighting, Lana, Ash, Kiawe, and Gladion fired simultaneous Z-Moves at the Prism Pokémon.

In Securing the Future!, the combined Z-Moves were absorbed by Necrozma, but it wasn't enough to get it to release Nebby. After informing Lusamine's group of the situation, the Ultra Guardians learned that, in the tale of Alola's creation, the people and Pokémon of Alola assisted Solgaleo and Lunala in restoring Necrozma's light by sharing their Z-Power with it. Together, the Ultra Guardians, their Pokémon, Lunala, Poipole's comrades, and everyone else back in Alola shared their Z-Power with Necrozma, causing to release Nebby. Afterwards, Ash and Nebby used Searing Sunraze Smash, while Gladion and Lunala used Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom on Necrozma. The combined Z-Moves fully restored Necrozma's light, giving it the strength to become its true form, Ultra Necrozma, and restore Poipole's home world back to its original state. Afterwards, the Ultra Guardians, Nebby, and Lunala traveled back to Alola through the Ultra Wormhole.

In SM095, Lana and the rest of the Ultra Guardians headed over to Wela Volcano park to investigate a disturbance thats going over there because its causing the Aether Foundation equipment for detecting Ultra Aura to get messed up. Finding out that someones been mining the area, Lana and the rest of the Ultra Guardians spring into action to stop them. After stooping them, Lana witness the Hikers that live in the area volunteer to help the Aether Foundation patrol area in case someone try to mess up the area again.

In SM099, Lana went to buy malasadas for a dinner with her family meant to celebrate her father's return from a fishing trip. When she asked Popplio what flavor malasada it wanted, she noticed that it had disappeared. As she searched for Popplio, Lana met up with the rest of her classmates, who agreed to help look around. Eventually, they found Popplio at the Hau'oli City Beachfront trying to defend a wild Eevee from Tupp, Rapp, and Zipp. With its newly-learned Surf, Popplio created a platform of water for Eevee to jump on, allowing it to use a powerful Double-Edge and send the Team Skull Grunts blasting off. After some encouragement from the others, Lana asked Eevee if it wanted to join her team, which it happily accepted. Eevee was nicknamed Nagisa and caught in a Dive Ball. After returning home, Lana introduced Nagisa to her father, who recognized it surfing on a Mantine earlier. Lana gave Nagisa a haircut, cutting its long bangs to a shorter length resembling her own hair.

In SM102, Lana surprised her classmates when she invited Misty and Brock to visit everyone in Alola as she kept in contact with Misty by writing letters to her. While Brock helps Nurse Joy at the Pokémon Center, Lana and everyone shows Misty around as they showed her some of their favorite places to eat. While the boys waited outside, Lana and the rest of the girls showed Misty their favorite store. Lana became interested in trying the Poké Ride Mantine Surf. Through Ash's suggestion of going to Treasure Island where he once visited with his Pikachu, Lana and everyone all Mantine Surfed over there. While surfing, Lana became surprised to see a wild Mantine popped right in front of her and that Nagisa jumped onto its back but does realized that the wild Mantine is a friend of her Pokémon. Arriving on the island, Lana enjoys having fun with her friends then joins Misty when she was siting on a log but Team Rocket showed up to steal the Mantine. Thanks to their teamwork, Lana and everyone were able to send Team Rocket blasting off. In the following episode, Lana and everyone brought Misty and Brock to Akala Island. Meeting up with Olivia, Lana and everyone watch Brock battle Olivia but it was interrupted by Team Rocket. Thanks to Brock and Olivia efforts, Lana and everyone were safe then watched a firework display.

In SM104, Lana and her classmates headed over to Poni Island for their individual research projects for school. Her research project's plans were to meet up Ida and catch up with her.

In SM106, Lana met up with Ida and realized that her Brionne had evolved into Primarina. Lana then trained with Ida while Mallow and Lillie watched. Later at night, Lana observed Ida and her Primarina as they performed their Z-Move, Oceanic Operetta. Wanting to show Ida how much she and Popplio have grown, Lana decided to do some training of her own. Before Ida left to search for treasure again, Lana arrived at the pier just in time to show Ida her growth by having her Popplio create a big balloon, which resulted in it evolving into Brionne. Impressed, Ida gave Lana a Primarium Z so she could do Oceanic Operetta someday.

Character

Lana with her sisters

Lana is a calm and gentle girl who cares deeply for Pokémon, particularly Water-types. As such, she enjoys many seafaring activities, such as fishing while riding on Lapras. While sincere most of the time, she also has a playful side, oftentimes telling outrageous jokes, such as being able to catch Legendary Pokémon like Kyogre and that a Lugia was nearby. She is additionally shown to become aggravated and flustered when dealing with her unruly younger sisters. Her love for Pokémon runs deep to the point where she grows incensed at the sight of cruelty against Pokémon, speaking in a hushed tone of voice and shooting an icy glare towards the aggressors. She is highly protective of her Pokémon if they are in danger. This was seen again in SM094, when she became concerned about them when they were surrounded by Ghost-types. When she isn't concerned for the well-being of Pokémon, she takes many measures to keep them happy, such as when she turned the Pokémon School into a haunted house for them so they could enjoy themselves.

Lana with Mallow when they became friends

When Lana was young, she used to be rather shy. This was best demonstrated during a flashback in Tasting the Bitter with the Sweet!; when she first encountered Mallow, she initially called her "Miss Family Restaurant" (Japanese: アイナ食堂さん Miss Aina Cafeteria), but when Mallow said she can call her Mallow, she became nervous and her face turned red. Lana's friendship with Mallow is strong, as seen in SM108, when she went to comfort Mallow when she became sad.

Lana is shown to be an expert at fishing as shown in Yo, Ho, Ho! Go, Popplio!, where Professor Kukui had her teach the class on fishing and managed to hook several Pokémon quickly such as Alomomola, Corsola, Finneon and later surprised the Fishing Expert by quickly catching a Feebas.

She has been shown to get annoyed at her sisters and their antics. Despite this, she still cares for them; once, she was concerned when she saw them jumping on the back of Kiawe's Turtonator, fearing they would touch its spines. Even though she gets frustrated with her sisters, it wasn't until SM094 that she had finally found the secret to stopping their antics, which involves forcefully yelling at them with a scary demeanor.

She cares deeply for her Pokémon, as shown in They Might Not Be Giants!, when her Popplio became separated from her along with Rowlet, to the point where she has to drag Ash along when they go searching for their Pokémon. This was shown again in SM102, when Nagisa tried to save a school of Mantine from Team Rocket; it was repelled by their mecha, but Lana caught it in time and praised it for its efforts.

Lana has been shown to be brave, as seen in Alola, Kanto!; whilst Mallow, Lillie, and Misty ran away after being scared by a Gyarados, she remained still and then, after changing into her swimsuit, jumped into the lake that Gyarados appeared from in search of Popplio.

Lana is shown to be quite athletic, as seen in The Long Vault Home!, where she was able to jump over 12 steps of a vaulting box which surprised everyone.

She has a tendency to make things up, but inadvertently tell the truth in the process, as seen in SM099. This personality trait appears to have been inherited from her mother, who does the same thing.

Since meeting Misty in Alola, Kanto!, they have become good friends, even writing to each other. This was revealed in SM102, when she invited Misty and Brock to come and visit Alola. The fact that Lana keeps in touch with friends was further expanded in SM104, where it was revealed she had been keeping in contact with her master Ida by writing her letters.
