History

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

Kelly and May

After meeting at the Lilycove Berry markets, May and Kelly quickly became friends and rivals in the upcoming Pokémon Contest. Kelly escorted the group to her mother's Pokéblock store, where May was introduced to Pokéblock making and a Berry Blender for the first time.

In Lessons in Lilycove, using her Combusken, May got off to a bad start, but managed to scrape through the Lilycove Contest's Appeals Round. Kelly, on the other hand, was very successful in making her way through, earning herself a 27.6 for her Grumpig's Pokéblock juggling performance.

Eventually, Kelly faced off against May in the final round of the Contest. Her Grumpig battled hard, quickly taking control of the round with its Psychic attack. However, May overcame Psychic by having Combusken aim a Fire Spin at the ceiling, dealing damage to Grumpig and causing it to eventually lose control of its Psychic attack. When time ran out, May had the most points remaining and won the Contest, earning her third Ribbon. Shortly after this, Kelly congratulated May, with both of them claiming they learned much from each other, and that they would both be ready for the next time they met up in a Contest battle.

In Hi Ho Silver Wind!, it was revealed that Kelly sent May a letter in the post, wishing her luck in the Hoenn Grand Festival.

Kelly was also seen very briefly at home watching the Hoenn Grand Festival on television in Deceit and Assist.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

In Battling as Hard as Stone!, Kelly and her Grumpig were seen watching Steven's Masters Eight Tournament match against Ash on television.

Character

Kelly is a fiery individual, who trains hard to prove that she is the best. While she is currently embarking on becoming a Top Coordinator, her long-term goal and real passion is to take over her mother's Pokéblock store.

She is upbeat, and encouraged May while she experimented with making her own Pokéblock in Pokéblock, Stock, and Berry. This attribute was also showcased during her Lilycove Contest performance, where she got the crowd involved by clapping along. Kelly utilizes a an experimental approach in her Contests, often taking control of the rounds with her unconventional methods and Grumpig's Psychic attack.

Kelly's Grumpig first appeared in Pokéblock, Stock, and Berry. It is very well trained and Kelly readily feeds it homemade Pokéblocks, as evident by the sheen of its black pearls. It is normally seen outside its Poké Ball.

When its owner was trying to haggle for Berries, she tripped, but Grumpig used Psychic to steady her and stop the Berries falling out of the grocery bag. Later, Team Rocket captured Grumpig, but with the help of May's Combusken and Beautifly, they were able to send Team Rocket blasting off.

In Lessons in Lilycove, Grumpig was used in the Lilycove City Pokémon Contest, where in the Appeals Round it used its Psychic and Bounce to juggle Pokéblocks. Kelly and Grumpig battled their way through to the finals, where they took on May and her Combusken. Grumpig quickly took control of the round with its Psychic attack used to manipulate Combusken's Fire Spin into a fire dragon and also immobilize its opponent. However, May overcame Psychic by having Combusken aim a Fire Spin at the ceiling, dealing damage to Grumpig and causing it to eventually lose control of its Psychic attack. When time ran out, May had the most points remaining and won herself the Contest.

It was seen watching the Hoenn Grand Festival in Deceit and Assist.
