Kalos (Japanese: カロス地方 Kalos-chihō) is a region of the Pokémon world. It is the setting of Pokémon X and Y. It is based on France.[1]

The Kalos region is shaped like a five-pointed star, with one of its biggest cities being Lumiose City to the north-central part of the region. It features a vast network of rivers and waterways snaking through much of its landscape, cities and towns. North-east of Lumiose City, lies a mountain range where more frigid temperatures exist, extending down into the plains below. Western Kalos features a vast ocean, where the shore side city of Shalour City lies in the middle of a cove.

Etymology

According to Junichi Masuda, the name "Kalos" comes from the Greek word κάλλος, meaning beauty.[2]

Culture

The Kalos region is based on Northern France, and, also much of the French culture has been implicated into the games. Language is interestingly used in the games, with signs, particularly cafe menus being written in French, and trainers including Professor Sycamore saying things like "Magnifique!" and "C'est Bon!". Not only does this imply that the region is bilingual, but it also implies that the region is part of an entirely separate nation from the other regions.

Another cultural similarity between Kalos and France is the music in the game, with a lot of

accordion, which is an instrument commonly associated with France. Evidence of this can be heard in many of the towns, including Aquacorde Town and Lumiose City. Professor Sycamore has his own, very French-sounding music as his theme when you are talking to him as part of the storyline. Music is not the only evidence of cultural similarities in the towns and cities however, with much of the architecture being similar too.

Illumoise city is based on Paris, and so has many similarities with the narrow roads and

alleys shared with central Paris. Another huge similarities is Prism tower in Centrico plaza being based on the Eiffel Tower, a significant landmark of Paris. Vaniville Town and Aquacorde both have buildings which represent much of the more rural parts of France's architecture.

Trivia

  • The English names of cities and towns in Kalos are derived from various ingredients used in fragrances. Likewise, the names in the European versions are derived from various terminologies related to art.
