The Johto Safari Zone is a special Pokémon preserve where Trainers can enter to capture certain types of Pokémon. The Johto Safari Zone will make its debut appearance in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, where it will be located northwest of Cianwood, and a previously unknown route will have to be traveled through to get there.
The island Cianwood City has been on has been enlarged from Gold, Silver, and Crystal in order to fit that route and the Safari Zone in. To access the Safari Zone, there will be a cave, on the northwest side of Cianwood, which can be entered to access another area, a previously unknown route, which will lead to the Safari Zone.
Like other Safari Zones, for $500, the player will receive 30 Safari Balls. With a large area to cover, Trainers must plan out their destination so as to arrive in time to capture all the Pokémon they want. When a wild Pokémon appears, no Pokémon may be sent out to battle it: catching Pokémon here, as in all Safari Zones, requires sheer luck. There are four options in the battle screen: Throw a Safari Ball, throw bait, throw a rock, and run away. Throwing bait makes a Pokémon less likely to run, but makes it harder to catch; while throwing a rock does the reverse, making it easier to catch but more likely to run.
Areas
A feature unique to the Johto Safari Zone is the customization of the areas inhabited by Pokémon. Each of the six areas may be placed in any arrangement the player desires. This is a useful function, as it means the player does not have to traverse to the furthest area from the entrance to get the Pokémon living in it and can save his or her limited amount of steps to locate the Pokémon.
Customization happens on the touch screen of the Nintendo DS's touch screen. By dragging and sliding the tiles with the stylus, the player can move them with ease. The exits to each area are arranged so that every combination of areas is possible: up to 120. The specific layout of the Safari Zone may be shared by multiple players at one time, like other events in Generation IV, through mixing records.
In total, there are five areas:
- Forest area
- Grassland area
- Pond area
- Desert area
- Cave area
