Jasmine (Japanese: ミカン Mikan) is the Gym Leader of Olivine City's Gym, known officially as the Olivine Gym. Her specialty is Template:Type2 Pokémon, and she gives the Mineral Badge to Trainers who defeat her in battle. She also appears in Sinnoh to give trainers HM07 (Waterfall) and to compete in Sinnoh's Super Contests.

In the games

Jasmine appears in Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver as the Gym Leader of the Olivine Gym. Her title in these games is "The Steel-Clad Defense Girl." She also appears in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

Jasmine is a very shy girl, and has trouble speaking. She is a compassionate girl, and when the Ampharos in Glitter Lighthouse (nicknamed Amphy) falls ill, Jasmine is so worried she cannot even smile. Amphy and Jasmine appear to be close, because once medicine is brought for Amphy, it will only take it from her.

Typically Jasmine is the sixth Gym Leader to be challenged in the Johto region, although she is the fifth to be encountered. When she is first met she will refuse to battle the player, as she is busy taking care of a sick Ampharos. She requests that a special medicine be brought from the Cianwood City pharmacy. When it is retrieved, she will heal the Ampharos and return to the Gym. In battle, she uses the recently-discovered Template:Type2 Pokémon, but it's said that she recently used to train a different type. A Gentleman in the Lighthouse says she used to train Template:Type2 Pokémon, like Onix. Once defeated she will yield the Mineral Badge and TM23 (Iron Tail).

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Jasmine is available to be fought again in Saffron City's Fighting Dojo. She will use a stronger team here—but will not appear until her Pokégear phone number has been obtained from the Olivine City diner. She goes there every afternoon, between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, but will travel to Kanto for battles on Wednesday afternoons. After defeating her in a rematch, Jasmine will call the player on his or her Pokégear to suggest a trade. She offers a Steelix nicknamed Rusty (Japanese: ネール Neil) (OT: 26491) that holds a Soothe Bell. She will accept any Pokémon in exchange. The Steelix, notably, shares its name with the one she uses in Super Contests in Sinnoh.

Jasmine in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum

In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Jasmine is staying in Sunyshore City for a while, which she says reminds her of home with its lighthouse and its location on the sea. She also occasionally enters Super Contests with her Steelix, which is nicknamed Rusty (Japanese: ネール Neil). She gives the player HM07 (Waterfall) after defeating the eighth Gym Leader, Volkner. A conversation with Erika in HeartGold and SoulSilver places Jasmine's appearance in Sinnoh after the main plot of the Johto games.

In the anime

Jasmine appears in Fight for the Light and Nerves of Steelix.

In the anime, Jasmine runs the Glitter Lighthouse in Olivine City. She used her Ampharos to light the way over the shore, but when it became ill, she asked Ash to fetch it some medicine from Cianwood City. Ash and his friends retrieved the medicine and sent it back with one of Jasmine's young apprentices, Janina.

Several weeks later, Ash and his friends returned from the Whirl Islands and Ash challenged Jasmine to a Gym battle. Ash used Cyndaquil and was able to defeat Jasmine's Steelix.

Compared to other media, where she is typically depicted as meek and soft-spoken, the anime version of Jasmine is markedly more confident, and even aggressive during Gym battles. She makes a powerful introduction, leaping from a cliff and gracefully landing on her Steelix. She is not afraid to take on Team Rocket, and is quite vocal in letting Ash know she won't go easy on him during battle.

Jasmine initially left her Gym to see Totaro, the egg of her two Togetic that Gold hatched for her. However, on her way Jasmine was caught in an earthquake caused by Team Rocket while traveling through Ecruteak City. Gold was to journey there to help her as instructed by the elderly couple at the Day Care. She had climbed the Tin Tower to get away from the shaking and had been caught in some rubble. Using Ampharos to send off a distress flare, she caught the attention of both Gold and Silver. Silver originally saved her, but Gold believed that Silver had in some way contributed to her injuries. Silver handed her over to Gold and was later given to Amphy, who rushed her out of the tower under Gold's orders before it collapsed, leaving the young rivals trapped in the tower.

Jasmine later managed to recover, unaware of Gold and Silver's efforts to rescue her (as she had not the consciousness to have any memory of the events). At the Pokémon League Tournament, she fought against Brock. She covered her Steelix in rubble to make it look like an Onix, thinking that the newly-discovered Steel Pokémon would be too horrifying for people to see. Steelix's type advantage gave it away, and the rubble was eventually cleared off to reveal her Steelix's nature. She later reasoned that she doesn't like to show off.

Jasmine once specialized in Template:Type2 Pokémon before Crystal and Professor Oak discovered Steel-type Pokémon.

Jasmine's two Togetic are the parents of Gold's Togepi.

In VS Pachirisu, Jasmine appears briefly in the background with Fantina, entering the Master Rank Super Contest.

• Her Japanese Leader title is 鉄壁ガードの女の子.
• She is the only female Gym Leader of Johto that admits defeat.
  • She is also the only female Johto Gym Leader that is not voiced by Megan Hollingshead in English.
• Jasmine appears to be watching the Contests in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald and in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. Whitney and Pryce appear in the audience as well.
• The Olivine City Gym is the only Gym in Johto that does not have any Trainers other than its leader.
• Jasmine is the first Gym Leader to appear in all five versions of a generation, as well as the first Gym Leader to appear outside of her home region in the games (both Brock and Misty take this honor in the anime).
• In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Jasmine uses an Empoleon in her team in a rematch against the player. This makes her the third gym leader to use a starter Pokémon, or one of its evolutions, and one of two to use a different region's starter, the other being Clair's Charizard.
• When rematched in HeartGold and SoulSilver, Jasmine's levels are actually the highest of all of the Johto leaders, despite her typically being the sixth leader; her Steelix reaches level 62, while the maximum of any other Johto leader is level 60.
• Jasmine appears as an opponent in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge. She uses a Steelix to battle.
• The moveset of Jasmine's team in Generation IV is almost completely identical to the moveset in Generation II - the only difference is her Steelix knows Sandstorm instead of Sunny Day.
• Jasmine is the only in-game trade in the series that doesn't require the player to have a specific Pokémon to give.
• In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Jasmine can be found in Celadon City with Erika. Erika is apparently trying to convince Jasmine to go participate in Pokémon Super Contests in Sinnoh, indicating that the events of HeartGold and SoulSilver versions happened prior to the events of Diamond, Pearl and Platinum.
