Generation I

There was no infrared connectivity during Generation I.

Generation II

In Generation II, the infrared port at the top of the Game Boy Color allows players to obtain Mystery Gifts via Pokemon Stadium 2, Pokémon Pikachu 2, or other Game Boy Colors.

Generation III

Generation III did not have infrared connectivity due to the release of the Wireless Adapter.

Generation IV

In Generation IV, the infrared detection was used to link the Nintendo DS and the Pokewalker.

Generation V

In Generation V, the infrared feature is accessed via the C-Gear.
