Hitmontop (Japanese: カポエラー Kapoerer) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

He evolves from Tyrogue starting at level 20 when Tyrogue's Attack and Defense are equal. It is one of three of Tyrogue's final forms.

Biology

Physiology

Hitmontop's main body has a spherical shape and is mostly blue (except for a brownish triangular patch on his chest). He has short legs with white bands at the lower portions, and big blue feet similar to Hitmonlee's (but with a different toe arrangement) and a circular brown marking on the underside. He has a skinny brownish tail that ends with a blue sphere with a spike on it. His head is round and brown with flat, curved extensions, a beady-eyed face and a single spike on top.

Gender differences

Hitmontop is a male-only species with no female-counterpart.

Special abilities

Hitmontop is the only known Pokémon that learns Triple Kick. If it spins at high speed, it may bore its way into the ground.

Behavior

Hitmontop spins on his head and uses his tail and legs to smack enemies. Although Hitmontop travels faster spinning than walking, it is still capable of walking normally in which case it retracts its tail to its side.

Trivia

• Despite gaining an extra ability in Generation IV, Hitmontop doesn't have an exclusive ability. Hitmonlee's exclusive ability is Reckless, while Hitmonchan's exclusive ability is Iron Fist.
• Unlike Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, Hitmontop's English name does not derive from that of a movie star.

Origin

Hitmontop is based on a top and a practitioner of capoeira.

Name origin

Hitmontop's name is a combination of hit, monster and top, likely referring to spinning tops as Hitmontop has been known to spin. His name is also based on those of Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, who are parallel evolutions to him. The name could also be seen as "hit 'em on top".

Kapoerer is derived from capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that often involves spinning one's legs in the air.
