Hidden Power (Japanese: めざめるパワー Awakening Power) is a damage-dealing Normal-type move introduced in Generation II. Although it appears as a Normal-type move, Hidden Power's actual type varies. It was TM10 from Generation II to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it is the signature move of Unown.

Effect

Main article: Hidden Power (move)/Calculation

Generations II and III

Hidden Power inflicts damage using a type and power determined by the user's IVs. The power varies between 31 and 70 in Generation II, and varies between 30 and 70 in Generations III to V. It can be any type that exists in Generation II other than Normal and ???.

Hidden Power receives a same-type attack bonus. For instance, a Bug-type Pokémon will receive same-type attack bonus when using a Bug-type Hidden Power.

Regardless of Hidden Power's actual type and damage category, Hidden Power can be countered by Counter but not by Mirror Coat. For other purposes, the damage category of Hidden Power matches its type.

Hidden Power cannot thaw a frozen target, even if its actual type is Fire.

Generation IV

Hidden Power is a special move regardless of its actual type, so it can now be countered by Mirror Coat but not by Counter.

Fire-type Hidden Power can now thaw a frozen target.

Hidden Power is affected by Normalize.

Generation V

Hidden Power is no longer affected by Normalize.

Generations VI and VII

Hidden Power's base power is now always 60. The method for determining the type of Hidden Power is the same as Generations III to V, so a Fairy-type Hidden Power is not possible.

Due to never being a Normal-type move, Hidden Power is unaffected by Pixilate, Refrigerate, Aerilate, and Ion Deluge. If the user is under the effect of Electrify, Hidden Power's type will become Electric, regardless of the user's IVs.

Hidden Power is always treated as Normal-type for Z-Move mechanics, and can be upgraded to Breakneck Blitz by a Normalium Z.

Generation VIII

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Hidden Power cannot be selected in a battle. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it can be selected and functions as it did in previous generations.

In other games

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Hidden Power is a move with 12 PP and 88% accuracy. The user attacks enemy in front, cutting corners. The type and base power of Hidden Power is randomly calculated whenever a Pokémon enters a dungeon, and does not change between floors. The type is selected among each of the 17 types with roughly equal probability (the game chooses from the 18 types, including typeless, choosing again if typeless is chosen; if this is done 100 times consecutively, Hidden Power will be of the Fire-type). The base power of the move is chosen among the following values with equal probability: 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 15, and 17. On description menu, Hidden Power is shown as a typeless move.

In Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, the move's base power range is now 2-15.

Pokémon Rumble series

Hidden Power is randomly assigned any of the 17 types whenever a Toy Pokémon has it as one of its moves. The type does not change for as long as the Pokémon keeps the move.

Pokémon GO

In Pokémon GO, Hidden Power is a Fast Attack that has been available since February 16, 2017. While Hidden Power is a Normal-type move in the game data, its actual type varies between individual Pokémon and is visible on the status screen of that Pokémon. Like in the core series, Hidden Power cannot be Normal- or Fairy-type; however, Hidden Power's type is not dependent on IVs and is instead randomly determined. If two players catch the same instance of a wild Pokémon that knows Hidden Power, the resulting Hidden Power type may still differ between the two players. If a Pokémon evolves, its Hidden Power type will also be randomly re-rolled. Hidden Power's type cannot be changed using a Fast TM or Elite Fast TM. If the player uses an Elite Fast TM on a Pokémon that can learn Hidden Power, its Hidden Power type will be displayed on the move selection screen.

If the player battles against a Pokémon that knows Hidden Power in a Raid Battle or Team GO Rocket Battle, the Hidden Power type will always be Fighting. However, its Hidden Power type will be randomly re-rolled if the player ends up capturing that same Pokémon.
