Helioptile (Japanese: エリキテル Erikiteru) is a dual-type Electric/Normal Pokémon.

It evolves into Heliolisk when exposed to a Sun Stone.

Biology

Helioptile are small, lizard-like Pokémon. They have a tapering tail, short legs, and small feet with three pointed toes on each foot. Their body is pale yellow, while their feet and the tip of their tail are black. The top of their head is black as well with a small triangular yellow patch between the eyes. They have two long, pointed frills hanging from the sides of their head that are black with yellow tips. The frills can stiffen and unfold. They have large eyes with blue irises and white pupils.

Trivia

  • Helioptile is the first Pokémon to have Normal-type as a secondary typing.

Origin

Helioptile is based on a lizard. It is likely based on a Frill-necked lizard. It may also be based on the spotted salamander, a salamander that can photosynthesize.

Name origin

Helioptile is a combination of ἥλιος helios (Ancient Greek for sun), heliophile (organism attracted to large amounts of sunlight), and reptile.

Erikiteru may be a combination of elekiter, エリマキトカゲ erimaki tokage (frill-necked lizard), and 照る teru (to shine).
