Growlie (Japanese: ガーちゃん Gar-chan), a Growlithe, was the first Pokémon belonging to James of Team Rocket. Its Japanese voice actor is 小形満 Mitsuru Ogata, and its English voice actress is Maddie Blaustein.

History

Before James ran away from home when he was a child, Growlie was his only friend on his parents' estate. The two were inseparable, and Growlie comforted James when he faced problems with his parents and arranged fiancé, Jessiebelle. When the stresses of home became too much, James ran away from home, but Growlie stayed behind, probably at James's request.

Years later, in Holy Matrimony!, James returned to his parents' home after hearing that they had died. However this turned out to be a hoax for them to get him to marry Jessiebelle, and after the deception was revealed, Jessiebelle trapped James in the family's basement. James called for Growlie, and Growlie burst into the room, rescuing its long-lost master. The two had a happy reunion, which had to be cut short to battle Jessiebelle and her Vileplume. Once again, James left home, set on giving up on his inheritance and continuing to live with Jessie and Meowth, and he told Growlie to stay behind to watch after his parents. Saddened, Growlie howled as James walked away from the mansion.

Growlie may very well be one of the most well-off Pokémon in the world. Its doghouse is the size of an average-sized human mansion, and it appears to get cared for by the family's butler. However, it is understandable that Growlie would be much happier on the road with James; perhaps one day, the two friends will be reunited. Growlie is set for a reappearance in DP153
