Granbull (Japanese: グランブル Granbulu) is a Fairy-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II. Prior to Generation VI, it was a Normal-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Snubbull starting at level 23.

Biology

Granbull is a purple, bipedal, bulldog-like Pokémon. It has a prominent lower jaw with two long, fang-like growths. Its upper jaw has two small fangs. The jaws are so heavy that the Pokémon has trouble keeping its head up. On the sides of its head are flat, curved ears, and its small nose is black. There is a black collar around its neck with two small white markings on it. Around its wrists are two black band markings, and it has a short tail.

Despite its fierce appearance, it is actually very timid. Unless Granbull is startled, it will not bite indiscriminately. If attacked, it will flail about to fend off its attacker. Granbull wanders around urban areas.

In the anime

In the main series

Major appearances

Madame Muchmoney's Granbull

A female Snubbull ran away from its home and followed Team Rocket (and, by extension, Ash and his friends) around the Johto region for a short while. She evolved into a Granbull in The Trouble with Snubbull. It was then returned to her owner, Madame Muchmoney.

Other

In Sleight of Sand!, Cassidy's Granbull battled Jessie's Seviper and was then defeated by Dawn's Piplup and a wild Hippopotas.

In Dressed for Jess Success!, Mario used a Granbull during the Lilypad Contest. It went up against Dawn and Mamoswine, and it was soon defeated.

In The Young Flame Strikes Back!, the Officer Jenny from Akala Island owns a Granbull. It prevented Viren and his henchmen from escaping after they arrived to arrest them for attempting to destroy the Paniola Ranch.

Minor appearances

In Spell of the Unown: Entei, Lisa used a Granbull during her battle against Ash, only for it to be defeated by Totodile.

In Ring Masters, two Granbull competed in Rikishii Town's Sumo Conference.

A Granbull appeared in Pikachu's PikaBoo.

A Granbull appeared in Extreme Pokémon!, under the ownership of a participant in the Extreme Pokémon Race.

A Coordinator's Granbull appeared in Harley Rides Again.

In Glory Blaze!, a Trainer's Granbull competed in the Hearthome City Tag Battle Competition.

Two Trainers' Granbull appeared in The Power of Us.

In Showdown on Poni Island!, Lillie photographed a wild, sleeping Granbull during her time on Poni Island.

In Pokémon Generations

A soldier's Granbull appeared in The Redemption, during a fantasy of a story from the past. It was one of the many Pokémon fighting in the great war of Kalos 3,000 years previously. Two other Granbull were seen petrified by AZ's ultimate weapon.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

A Granbull appeared in Teddiursa's Picnic, where it was stealing Pokémon to get attention as its jaw was dislocated. When Gold accidentally knocks its jaw into relocation, it happily returns all the Pokémon it took.

A Granbull appeared in The Last Battle XIII as one of the Pokémon sent to participate in the fight in Ilex Forest.

Green's Snubbull evolved into Granbull in Give It Your Best, Blastoise.

A Granbull appears with its Trainer at the Mini-game Corner in the X & Y arc.

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Granbull hangs around Pokémon Square. Granbull evolved from Snubbull without realizing what was happening, though it enjoyed its new appearance after getting over the initial shock. This event alerted the rest of the characters that evolution was now possible.

Trivia

  • Granbull and its pre-evolved form share their category with Clefairy and Clefable. They are all known as the Fairy Pokémon.
  • As the Ability Quick Feet did not exist until Generation IV, a Snubbull with either Intimidate or Run Away will always evolve into a Granbull with Intimidate in Generation III games. This means that in Generation III, Granbull is the only Pokémon with an Ability that evolves from a Pokémon with one of two possible Abilities that shares to Granbull's Ability.
  • Granbull is the first Pokémon to evolve on-screen in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series.
  • Granbull has the highest Attack stat of all non-legendary Fairy-type Pokémon.

Origin

Granbull is based on a bulldog. Its category, Egg Group, and (as of Generation VI) type may reference the Cù-sìth, a mythological creature in Celtic mythology whose name literally translates to "dog fairy". Granbull's current typing and appearance also may reference goblins, orcs, or other mythical races of grotesque appearance.

Name origin

Granbull and Granbulu may be a combination of grand and bulldog or bully (referencing its tendency to scare foes with its fangs or even bite them). It may also reference grumble (referring to its grumbling, growling tendency).
