Google Play (formally Android Market) is a digital distribution service owned and operated by Google and is the official app store for the Android operating system. Along with Android apps, the service also sells movies, TV shows and books. The service is linked to Google's online video-sharing platform YouTube; movies and TV shows purchased on Google Play are watchable on YouTube.

The Android Market launched on October 22, 2008[1] and rebranded as Google Play on March 6, 2012[2]. It is the official app store of Android, and as of March 2020, it had 2,870,000 apps available for download[3].

Movies & TV

Google TV launched in May 2011 as Google Movies[4], and rebranded with the rest of Google Play in March 2012 as Google Play Movies[2] (later becoming Google Play Movies & TV and then Google TV in September 2020).[5] It is possible to purchase or rent movies in in over 110 countries and TV shows are available to purchase in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States[6]. Purchases and rentals are viewable via the Google Play Movies & TV app, the Google Play website, the YouTube app or the YouTube website.
