Gligar (Japanese: グライガー Gliger) is a dual-type Ground/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves into Gliscor when leveled up, at night, holding a Razor Fang.

Biology

Physiology

Gligar is a small, purple, bat-like Pokémon. It has blue wings, which are similar in function to a flying squirrel's, and have pointed purple tips at the edges of the membranes. Gligar has pincers on its forelegs, and a segmented, insectoid tail with a stinger on the end. Gligar has short hind legs, and feet that appear segmented with a large, single claw each. Additionally, Gligar has long, pointed ears and triangle-shaped eyes, fangs and a large tongue which is often seen out of its mouth. Gligar could be considered a cousin of Skorupi due to its scorpion-like traits; however, it shares some bat-like traits as well, making it similar to Zubat.

Gender differences

A female Gligar has a smaller stinger.

Special abilities

Gligar knows a small handful of poisonous attacks, such as Poison Sting and the rarely known Cross Poison. Gligar can also use a few Template:Type2 moves, like Fury Cutter and U-turn. While Gligar can learn Ground and Template:Type2 moves typical to a Template:Type2 Pokémon, its abilities as a Template:Type2 are limited. Most notable is the fact that Gligar cannot learn Fly.

Also, Gligar and its evolved form Gliscor are the only two Pokémon that are both Flying and Ground, which gives them a unique immunity to both Template:Type2 and Ground moves. This trait is shared only with Vibrava, Flygon, Baltoy, and Claydol due to the Levitate ability.

As shown in Riding the Winds of Change!, Gligar, along with its evolved form Gliscor, can emit sound waves to detect obstacles and fly around them.

Behavior

Flying straight at the foe’s face, it startles them by clamping on with its clawed hind legs and the pincers on its forelegs, before jabbing with its poison stinger. Gligar also tend to ambush prey as it passes by below. When it is done gliding, it hops along the ground back to its nest.

Habitat

Gligar live in mountainous regions, making their nests along cliff sides. It also prefers hot arid environments, but doesn't mind forests either.

Ash's Gligar

A group of Gligar, along with a Gliscor, was featured in Riding the Winds of Change!. One of the Gligar was captured by Ash, while the Gliscor was captured by Paul. Ash's Gligar later evolved in Fighting Fear With Fear!.

Other

Gligar debuted in The Superhero Secret. It was owned by a superhero named Gligarman, and later by his daughter when he retired from crime-fighting.

Minor appearances

Morrison's Gligar first appeared in Saved by the Beldum.

A Gligar appeared in For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll.

A Gligar appeared in Volume 9 that stole Gold's Togepi egg. With its Poison Sting, it felled both Ataro and Poltaro, then a Poliwag, before being caught by Utaro, Gold's Sudowoodo, and then attacked by Explotaro, and Gold's Sunkern, Sintaro, as it tried to escape. It was then beaten by the newly hatched Togepi it tried to eat, waking Gold in the process.

Trivia

• Although Gligar was unable to learn Earthquake by TM in Generation II, a Gligar that knew Earthquake was a reward in Pokémon Stadium 2 for beating the rival in Round 2.
• Gligar and its evolution are the only Pokémon to have the Ground/Flying type combination.
  • Gligar and Gliscor are the only dual-typed Pokémon that have immunity to one of their own types without the help of an ability.
• Gligar's colors vary between games and the anime. It is light blue-violet in most sprite artwork and game artwork, dark pink in Pokémon Gold and Silver, blue-purple in Platinum, regular purple in the high-grade console games such as Pokémon Battle Revolution, and powder-pink in the anime and in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
• Gligar is heavier than its evolution at 142.9 lbs to Gliscor's 93.7 lbs.
• Gligar is one of ten non-Bug, Template:Type2 Pokémon that cannot learn Fly.

It shares physical traits with bats, gargoyles, and scorpions. It may be based on the scorpionfly.

Gligar's name is a combination of glide and gargoyle.
