Gladion (Japanese: グラジオ Glazio) is a character introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. He works for Team Skull as an enforcer, and serves as a rival character to the player in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. He is the only character in the games to have the Trainer class Team Skull (Japanese: スカルだん Skull Gang).

In the games

Gladion first appears in Pokémon Sun and Moon. He was originally a member of the Aether Foundation together with his mother, Lusamine, and his sister, Lillie. However, over time, he noticed his mother's obsession with the Ultra Beasts and realized that she would ruin Alola if she let Ultra Beasts into the region. For this reason, he decided to leave the foundation, only telling Wicke of his departure. Before leaving, he stole one of the three Type: Null created to be a weapon to attack Ultra Beasts.

Upon leaving the Aether Foundation, Gladion had two goals: to stop his mother and to free Type: Null from the helmet that was meant to subdue it. He eventually worked as an enforcer for Team Skull but was never considered an actual member of the team.

Gladion first meets the player on Route 5 as a Team Skull member, but he does not seem to be interested in Team Skull's affairs, unlike the Grunts near him. After his second battle with the player at the Battle Royal Dome, he realizes the player might be able to help him stop Lusamine. When encountered on Route 13, he informs the player Team Skull is after Cosmog. Knowing now Team Skull is helping Lusamine get Cosmog back, he tells the player that they should make sure Cosmog is safe. When Lillie gets captured while the player is battling Guzma in Po Town, Gladion appears before the player upon their return to the Aether House and battles them to express his frustration. After getting his priorities straight, he takes the player and Hau to Aether Paradise to face Lusamine and save both her and Lillie. Gladion is also encountered on the way to the newly finished Pokémon League on Mount Lanakila. He thanks the player for stopping Lusamine and reveals that not only has he received a Z-Ring, but also managed to release his Type: Null from its restraint, evolving it into Silvally. His Silvally will be holding the memory of the type that is strong against the player's starter Pokémon's type.

After the player has become the Champion of the Alola region, Gladion has taken over as acting president of the Aether Foundation while Lusamine is away. He may be spoken to at Aether Paradise's conservation area, where he will give the player a Type: Null of their own, along with all of Silvally's memory drives.

Gladion is also one of the possible challengers who may appear at the Pokémon League as the player defends their title as Champion.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Gladion's role is mostly similar as in Sun and Moon, although with several changes. As Lusamine is not obsessed with Ultra Beasts in this continuity, he instead left Aether Paradise with Type: Null due to Mohn's disappearance, seeking to become stronger to protect Lillie and Lusamine. After the player becomes Champion, Gladion leaves the Alola region to train at Kanto and Johto. Before leaving, he leaves a Type: Null and a set of memory drives in the possession of Wicke, who gives them to the player at Ancient Poni Path during the post-game.

A month after Ultra Necrozma's defeat, Gladion returns to Alola and can be faced in a Pokémon League Title Defense battle, where he will wield the fully evolved form of a Kanto starter Pokémon, whose type matches the player's starter Pokémon's type. After Gladion has been defeated in a Title Defense battle, the player can visit Aether Paradise to see Gladion witnessing a meeting between Lusamine and Mohn, with Lusamine letting her amnesiac husband continue his life of running Poké Pelago. Gladion asks Lusamine if she's sure about wanting to leave him in his current state, but Lusamine is simply satisfied to see Mohn being happy with his life.

Pokémon Sun and Moon

Route 5
"Are you even taking this seriously?"
"...Enjoying it?"
"You can enjoy Pokémon battling when you put everything you have into it... which clearly you haven't."
"You're <player>?"
Yeah, that's me: "Hmph. Not very cautious. Even some Pokémon have a better sense of self-preservation than you apparently do."
Nope, not me/Who?: "Hmm. So you have enough sense to be wary. Not bad..."
"I'm Gladion. I battle for my partner, Null, to make it strong. Though most of our time gets used up doing small jobs for Team Skull."
  • Before battle
"Battle me. I won't take no for an answer."
  • Upon being defeated
"How annoying!"
  • After being defeated
"Hmph... It's not like me to slip up like that. I've got to keep fighting stronger opponents. Looks like I'm still not ready..."
Regardless of choice: "That kid there. His Pokémon aren't weak."
"And sure, it's fine to enjoy battling..."
"But this brat... he's just using that as an excuse not to try hard because he can't beat the kahuna. Because he can't beat Hala when he's serious!"
"Just give it up already."
"You know you can't beat me. You'll just get your Pokémon hurt for no reason."
"They're good Pokémon."
Royal Avenue
"Hmph. Why do I do this... Every time something brings me down, I end up coming right back here again..."
"Come on, Null. Let's go bury our sorrow in the crowd."
Battle Royal Dome
"Because Null and I have to make it on our own. And I don't ever want to forget that."
Akala Motel - Route 8
"Get out."
Route 13
"You only have one volume, don't you? Haven't you ever heard the expression that silence is golden?"
"Listen, Team Skull is looking for a Pokémon called Cosmog... Do you two know anything?"
"So you do know something. Look... Cosmog isn't even a strong Pokémon. But it has the potential to summon Pokémon so terrifyingly strong that you don't even know. If something like that happened, it would be a disaster for Alola..."
"Protect it! If you do know where Cosmog is or if you do find anything out...just keep it safe! I know I might be working for Team Skull right now, so you may not trust me or care but... I'm going to tell you this just once. You have to protect Cosmog... no matter what!"
"I still don't even understand how Team Skull found out about Cosmog in the first place..."
Aether House
  • Before battle
"Did I hear that right? It was Lillie who took Cosmog?!"
"And you all are so useless and weak that now Cosmog is... Lillie is... Arghhh! I'll show you how angry you make me!"
  • Upon being defeated
"Hmph... How annoying."
  • After being defeated
"That was wrong of me... I shouldn't have dragged you into a meaningless battle like that..."
"But I told you both! I told you that Cosmog would bring disaster to all of Alola! I have to get it back from them!"
"We'll leave from the ferry terminal. You're coming with me whether you like it or not, so the only question is, are you ready to come now or not?"
Yes: "Good... Then let's go."
No: "I'll wait for you near the Ula'ula ferry terminal. Don't make me wait long."
Malie City
  • Before battling Nanu
"Hrmph..."
"So, we're waiting for Hau?"
Regardless of choice: "Yeah, I guess so... He's a pretty interesting kid. I'll give you that."
"Growing up in the great kahuna's shadow and still trying to stand up to Hala as an equal? ...I couldn't do it."
"Officer Nanu?"
  • After defeating Nanu
"Don't you dare say a word about this being fun."
"Hmph... So you're not quite as dumb as you are naive."
"It'll be Aether Paradise."
Aether Paradise
B1F
"Aether Paradise's harbor... We made it this far without running into trouble. But I don't like how quiet it is. You two...stay alert."
"She just will be."
"I guess...we take the elevator."
  • If talked to before using the elevator
"The air is already growing heavy... I have to do something!"
  • If talked to after attempting to use the elevator
"Hmph. Just like I thought..."
"Looks like outsiders can't use the main elevator to reach the lower levels."
"I was afraid this might happen. But still... What a pain."
"We don't have any choice. We'll have to go up."
1F
"Like you don't know why. You of all people should know everything that happens in the Aether Foundation. Isn't that right, high-and-mighty Branch Chief?"
"Hey, <player>."
"You know why being a Trainer is so great? Because when you're battling, it doesn't matter if you're a kid or an adult. Everyone's equal in Pokémon battle!"
  • After defeating Faba
"So... As I said, Faba. You of all people know what I'm here for."
"We're in a bit of a hurry, Faba. A lift would be nice."
"<Player>. Hau. If you're ready, let's head down."
"Are you ready?"
Yes: "...All right. Let's go."
No: "...Don't make me wait too long."
B2F
"...Everything looks the same. I guess it's only been two years, though."
"Don't get too excited, Hau."
"Though I guess it's better than freezing from fear or nerves."
"There are two labs up ahead. I'll check the first lab, Secret Lab A. You two check out Secret Lab B. It's the second lab, down the hall."
"...Just focus, Hau. Think you can do that? We can't trust Faba. I'm sure he's already told half the foundation all about us."
  • If talked to in front of Secret Lab A
"It's not here..."
"Don't even think about getting in here."
"Me and Null... We're more alike than we might look. We're both what we were made to be..."
"I was like an ornament to my mother. Wearing whatever she told me to wear, acting however she wanted me to act..."
"Null was crafted just as carefully. It was made just to battle the beasts. In this room...right here..."
  • After searching Secret Lab B
"Did you find anything?"
"If you stress it... If you hurt it—is that what you mean? Was that why she ran away with it?"
"Yeah... Faba probably knew this would be a dead end."
"Darn... Did he outsmart us?"
1F (after clearing B2F)
"Hmph... Even beaten down, old Faba doesn't change, does he?"
"Beat whoever stands in our way. What other choice do we have?"
"That's what you get when you go through the trials of the island challenge. Now that you understand...how about you get out of our way?"
"Let's go."
"You know... I know we aren't friends. But I'm glad you two are here... I remember what you said at Battle Royal Dome that day, Hau. About how people can achieve more if they do something together. Looks like maybe you were right."
"What's happened to Lillie? Do you know anything?"
"Then that's where I'm going. That's all I need to know."
"Yeah, she's real nice...as long as you mean nothing to her."
"That's not stopping me."
"We don't have time for this. Help me out here, <player>."
  • After defeating the second pair of Aether Foundation Employees
"Maybe helping one another out isn't so bad..."
"<Player>! Hau! I leave Faba to you!"
Outside
"Ngh! So I'm still not strong enough."
"All the days that I struggled alone and lonely... it was all for nothing? Is that it?"
  • If talked to again
"Please...help Lillie... and save Cosmog! I'll be right behind you..."
Trophy Room
"Will you listen to me at least? You mustn't open the Ultra Wormhole. You cannot let the beasts run wild!"
"I'll stop the beast!"
"My partner Null was born to be a beast killer!"
"Hau, you take Guzma!"
"<Player>! Stop the president!!! If we don't, Alola will be flooded with beasts!"
  • After defeating Lusamine
"What is it?"
"Come on. Let's get out of here. Nothing good can happen here."
Lusamine's room
"Yeah, maybe. But there is still a ton we have to do..."
"There's the president and Guzma, who both disappeared into the Ultra Wormhole..."
"Not to mention Cosmog and why it stopped moving like that..."
"Even if she is...like that, Lusamine is still our mother. We can't just leave her in the beast's world."
"We might be able to reach other worlds if we had Alola's Legendary Pokémon on our side. The people of Alola worship it, but I don't know if it's even real..."
"We'll take you up on that."
Outside (the next day)
"So this is where you were."
"I found this downstairs."
"It's the MoonS/SunM Flute. It's apparently an artifact from Alola's past. They say it's to be played under the moon'sS/sun'sM light."
"The Sun Flute and the Moon Flute. When sounded together, it's said that they can call the Legendary Pokémon... That is, if you believe in old myths, anyway."
"Looks to me like that woman was even planning to add the Legendary Pokémon to her little collection here."
"Here. Take this with you."
"It's a Master Ball. It can catch any Pokémon without fail."
"I'm counting on you to help Lillie. This is the least I can do."
"Deal with this mess. I've got to clean up Aether Paradise."
"I'd wanted to get as far away from this place as I could, together with Null... but in the end, it looks like I ended up right back here again..."
"What was that?"
"Sorry for dragging you into our family mess."
"Yeah. Our mother does like to do things on an... extravagant scale."
"I can get you to the next island at least. Poni Island. I'll wait for you at the docks."
B1F (the next day)
"Ready to go?"
Yes: "All right."
No: "Then I'll wait here."
Seafolk Village
"Poni Island... Almost no one lives on it, but you'll find a whole lot of nature to explore here."
"Go. Find the kahuna. The kahuna of Poni Island also protects the shrine where Alola's people worship the Legendary Pokémon. Maybe they will know something that might help you."
"I'm sorry... I wasn't there for you when you needed me. All I could think about back then was finding a way to save Null... That was the battle I was fighting. But now you've found your own battle to fight. I know you can handle it."
Mount Lanakila
  • Before battle
"I've been waiting for you. To thank you. For what you did for Lillie. For our mother. I appreciate it. Maybe more than you know. And the only thing I can offer you in thanks is a great battle. So I'm going to show my full power... My real full power this time! With the Z-Ring that old man gave me!"
  • Upon being defeated
"Hmph. There's nothing more to say."
  • After being defeated
"You've got a good/good Pokémon. I know what kind of Trainer you are now. And what kind of journey you've been through."
"Lillie wanted me to tell you something. She's looking after our mother at the foundation."
"She wanted me to tell you...that you're the best Pokémon Trainer in the world, <player>."
"She gave me this. For you."
"Hau's working hard to get stronger, too."
"Hmph... If you two are going to get even stronger, then I guess I can't let down my guard yet."
"I know we aren't friends. But we aren't enemies anymore either. Keep winning. Maybe I'll see you again if you do."
Akala Motel - Route 8
  • Letter
"Mother— I apologize most sincerely for the actions I took in taking Null and running away. Yet I cannot regret these actions. They were for the sake of the greater good. So, until we meet again..."
Aether Paradise
2F
  • After becoming Champion
"So you came..."
"I guess I've got to thank you again for all you've done for my family... Especially...for Lillie. I never knew she could smile like that."
"My mother's desires to reach Nihilego... and what she did in order to achieve that goal... I know she was completely out of control. But that doesn't mean I can't understand it."
"It was my father who started it. He was the one who first confirmed the existence of Ultra Wormholes and Ultra Beasts."
"But my father... He disappeared during an experiment. Trying to connect to an Ultra Wormhole. All that he left behind was a weakened Cosmog and his papers about Nihilego..."
"Lusamine's obsession with Ultra Wormholes... and her obsession with the Ultra Beasts... I think it was all basically her way of trying to reach him again. That's what I had to believe. To get through it."
"It's not an apology or anything, but... I hope you'll take this fellow."
  • If the player's party and PC Boxes are all full
"You can't even take Type: Null? How many Pokémon have you collected? I can't even believe you... Fine. Come back when you're ready to take it."
  • After receiving Type: Null
"And I'll give you all the memory drives that let its Evolution, Silvally, change its type..."
"This is a different Type: Null. Not the same one that I ran away with... It was kept in Secret Lab A. Its very existence was a secret."
"But I think I know you well enough. I think I can trust you to show it the world."
"Hmph... Maybe it's time I see a bit more of the world myself... and starting with that Pokémon League, I think. I hear that Alola's got a real strong Champion."
Pokémon League
First challenge
  • Before battle
"What does a Pokémon Trainer really need to be successful? I guess everyone might have their own answer. But for me... I want the strongest rival for myself."
  • Upon being defeated
"All I have to do is avoid making any more mistakes... After all, I have Silvally with me."
  • After being defeated
"Losing can teach you a lot, you know. I learn a lot from it... Losing just helps you see how to get stronger. So I'm glad we did this. That I had a Champion to help me get stronger."
Subsequent challenges
  • Before battle
"You just use your best moves and see who is left standing at the end, right?"
  • Upon being defeated
"All I have to do is avoid making any more mistakes... After all, I have Silvally with me."
  • After being defeated
"Phew... I'll be back again. You can count on that, Champion!"

"Go. Find the kahuna. The kahuna of Poni Island also protects the altar where Alola's people worship the Legendary Pokémon. Maybe they will know something that might help you."
"I'm sorry... All I could think about in those days was how Null and I had to be stronger... But we'll use the strength that we found to protect the foundation in Mother's place. This will be your battle now. I know you can handle it."

"I've been waiting for you. To thank you. For what you did for Lillie. For our mother. I appreciate it. Maybe more than you know. And the only thing I can offer you in thanks is a great battle. So I'm going to show my full power... My real full power this time! With the Z-Power Ring that old man gave me!"
  • Upon being defeated
"Hmph. There's nothing more to say."
  • After being defeated
"You've got a good/good Pokémon. I know what kind of Trainer you are now. And what kind of journey you've been through."
"Last time I saw Lillie, she was heading up to Mahalo Trail... It seemed like she had something on her mind."
"She's...she's gentle enough to be able to feel how much pain Pokémon go through. I guess that's a kind of strength, too."
"Here. Take this. She wanted me to give it to you."
"You know, I tried battling Hau, too... He's really changed. I'm not surprised anymore that he managed to beat even Kahuna Hala."
"Hmph... If you two are going to get even stronger, then I guess I can't let down my guard yet."
"I know we aren't friends. But we aren't enemies anymore either. Keep winning. Maybe I'll see you again if you do."

Gladion in the anime

Though he did not appear in Lillie's Egg-xhilarating Challenge! in person, a younger Gladion was shown in a photo along with his mother Lusamine and sister Lillie.

He made his first physical appearance in A Glaring Rivalry!, in which he had a battle against Tupp, Zipp, and Rapp, and quickly defeated their Pokémon with Lycanroc's Stone Edge. Later, he and Lycanroc were seen having a battle against a Sailor's Blastoise and won. Ash then asked him for a battle, but Gladion did not accept his offer until the next morning. During the battle, his Lycanroc faced Ash's Rockruff, but the battle was interrupted by Team Rocket's latest scheme to steal Lycanroc and Ash's Pikachu.

After defeating Team Rocket with Lycanroc's Continental Crush Z-Move, he told Ash that if he wanted to obtain the Rockium Z, he would have to clear Akala's grand trial.

He appeared in a flashback in Trials and Determinations!.

Gladion reappeared in Rising from the Ruins!. After his Lycanroc heard Rockruff's howls and left to find it, he told it to return by nighttime. Later on, Gladion entered a cave and sent out his Type: Null, which he had nicknamed Silvally. He then began comforting it, as Silvally felt troubled by its helmet, telling it that they couldn't go outside during the day when others would see it.

Gladion reappeared in A Dream Encounter! alongside his Pokémon, in which he was once again seen calming down Silvally. Gladion suspected that Silvally had detected something, which was the reason for its uneasiness.

In A Masked Warning!, Gladion encountered Ash at Ten Carat Hill after the latter was teleported there by Nebby, which Gladion believed to be an Ultra Beast. There, Gladion revealed that the reason Lillie became unable to touch Pokémon was due to her being attacked by the Ultra Beast Nihilego. Later, Ash challenged Gladion to a battle using his Dusk Form Lycanroc against Silvally. The battle eventually ended with Gladion as the victor. Afterward, Gladion left while telling Ash to not tell anybody about Silvally.

In Night of a Thousand Poses!, Nebby teleported Lillie to Gladion's location. Reacting to Nebby's presence, Silvally leaped in front of Lillie, causing her to remember the incident that led to her fear of touching Pokémon. When Nebby teleported Lillie back to her friends, she realized that she lost the ability to touch any Pokémon again, even the ones she had gotten used to.

In Mission: Total Recall!, Gladion chastised Ash for letting Lillie see Silvally. Angered, Gladion returned to his hotel room, only to find Faba waiting for him there. Faba attacked Gladion and put him to sleep in order to steal Silvally. Later, Gladion told Lusamine what Faba did and demanded that she tell him where Silvally was taken. Lusamine, completely unaware about the entire situation, helped Gladion search for Silvally in Faba's research room. As they searched, Gladion chastised Lusamine for failing to realize that her desire to meet the Ultra Beasts was what led to the events that caused Lillie's fear of touching Pokémon.

After finding Silvally's Poké Ball, Gladion and Lusamine headed outside, where they found Faba attacking Lillie and Ash. In order to save Lillie, Silvally evolved from Type: Null into Silvally and defeated Faba's Pokémon. With her daughter freed, Lusamine hugged Lillie and apologized for her neglectful parenting. Lillie accepted Lusamine's apology and then apologized to Silvally, the Pokémon that saved her from a Nihilego years ago. This allowed Lillie to get over her past trauma and regain the ability to touch Pokémon.

In Faba's Revenge!, Lillie and Ash informed Gladion that Faba had kidnapped Nebby. The three traveled to Aether Paradise, where they informed Lusamine about the situation. They headed to Faba's location, only to find that he successfully forced Nebby to summon a Nihilego from an Ultra Wormhole. The group tried to fight off Nihilego, but it proved to be too powerful and easily defeated their Pokémon. When Gladion tried to protect his family from the Ultra Beast, Lusamine pushed him out of the way and was captured instead. Nihilego then proceeded to drag Lusamine into the Ultra Wormhole.

In Family Determination!, Gladion and Lillie decided to travel to the Altar of the Sunne in order to find a way to rescue Lusamine. After making their way through the island, they found themselves in a battle with a group of Jangmo-o and Hakamo-o led by a Totem Kommo-o. With Lillie's knowledge of types, Gladion gave Silvally a Fairy Memory, allowing it to easily defeat Totem Kommo-o and allow the two to pass through. As they made their way to the altar, a piece of rubble began to fall on them, only to be destroyed by Pikachu's Electro Ball. Ash and his classmates revealed that they have decided to help Gladion and Lillie rescue Lusamine.

In Revealing the Stuff of Legend!, Gladion watched with the others as the guardian deities helped Nebby evolve into a Solgaleo. With Nebby's assistance, the group traveled into an Ultra Wormhole in order to find where Lusamine was taken to.

In Rescuing the Unwilling!, Gladion and the others arrived at Ultra Deep Sea, where they found that Lusamine had fused with Nihilego. Lusamine, reduced to a childlike state, claimed the Ultra Beasts as her own possessions and ran off in order to prevent the group from taking them away from her. As the group chased Lusamine down, more and more people were forced to stay behind in order to fight off Lusamine's Pokémon. Gladion was forced to stay behind in order to battle Lusamine's Absol.

In 10,000,000 Reasons to Fight!, Gladion gave Silvally a Fire Memory to break out of the ice after it was frozen by Absol's Ice Beam attack. He and Lycanroc then used Continental Crush on Absol. Although Absol appeared to have been defeated by this move, Nihilego made it get back up and continue battling. Gladion then rode Silvally to get to Lusamine. Later, they crossed the poisonous pool surrounding Lusamine and Nihilego, after Gladion gave Silvally a Steel Memory to make it immune to the poison. Gladion and Silvally distracted Nihilego, while Ash and Pikachu used the Z-Move 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt to weaken Nihilego long enough for Gladion and Lillie to free their mother from its hold. Lusamine's Pokémon were returned to normal as a result. Lusamine was then brought back to Alola through the Ultra Wormhole.

Gladion met up with Ash again in The Professors' New Adventure! and informed him that he would be taking part in the island challenge. Before leaving, he explained that he couldn't just sit and be quiet after watching him and Pikachu use their new Z-Move.

Gladion in Pokémon Adventures

Gladion debuts in PASM04. He first appears as a participant at an Iki Town festival tournament. Initially, he is away when the placement of the participants was being decided, but returns when the tournament actually begins. He reveals his absence was due to him investigating a crack in the sky his Type: Null had sensed.

In PASM05, Gladion is paired up against Hau, the grandson of the Island Kahuna Hala. During the battle, Gladion asks Hau why he decided to join the tournament and assumes Hau wishes to surpass his grandfather. When Hau replies that he joined because he thought it would be fun, Gladion berates him and calls him weak. Eventually, Hau is defeated, allowing Gladion to move to the next round.

In PASM06, Gladion's opponent is Moon. Moon reveals that she also saw a crack in the sky and asks Gladion to tell her about it. Gladion agrees, but only on the condition that Moon defeats him. During their battle, Moon proves to be an effective strategist and nearly defeats Gladion's Porygon. Despite this, Porygon eventually defeats Moon's final Pokémon through luck, giving him the win. The shock of losing to something as unscientific as the concept of luck greatly angers Moon, causing her to become dejected and ignore the final battle of the tournament.

In PASM07, Gladion faces off against Sun in the finals. Due to the immense defense Type: Null possesses because of its iron mask as well as its incredible strength, Sun struggles to defeat his opponent. After Sun's strategy to get through Type: Null's mask fails, Gladion angrily tells him to quit fooling around and begins to question Sun's motivations for participating. Angered by Gladion's attitude, Sun angrily declares that he will obtain the 100 million yen he needs at any cost. As he does this, the cast on Sun's arm unravels, revealing a Sparkling Stone underneath. A powerful energy shoots out from the crack in the sky and lands on the Sparkling Stone before moving towards Sun's Litten, Dollar. The energy powers up Dollar's Ember, allowing it to create a powerful sea of flames that defeat Type: Null. The strain of the attack causes Sun to pass out as he wonders just what move it was that En used.

Afterward, a defeated Gladion leaves Iki Town. Realizing that he lost his chance to meet with the tapu, Gladion decides to find a place to train himself so that he may be fully prepared to face the Ultra Beasts.

In PASM08, he travels to the Ruins of Conflict to try and meet with Tapu Koko, only to find Guzma there. Guzma praises Gladion's skills at the tournament and offers him a job as an Enforcer for Team Skull. To Guzma's surprise, Gladion immediately accepts, but wishes to know about the person Guzma mentioned when he left during the tournament. Guzma feigns ignorance about his earlier statement and tells Gladion to follow him to Team Skull's hideout.

In PASM11, Sun and Moon traveled to Memorial Hill, where they find a defeated Kiawe lying on the ground, unconscious. Kiawe reveals that Gladion attacked him in order to get info on the location of the Ruins of Life, where Tapu Lele resides. In PASM12, the three travel to the ruins, where they encounter Gladion, who managed to find and easily kidnap Tapu Lele. Moon reveals that Tapu Lele must be resting from the injuries it sustained when it fought a mysterious creature that emerged above Lush Jungle. When asked by Moon about his intentions, Gladion reveals that he intends on capturing the guardian deities. Moon assumes Gladion must need the deities to fight off the Ultra Beasts and suggests that they work together. Sun refused to work with someone who chooses to work with villains and decides to defeat Gladion with his newly learned Z-Move.

Due to not possessing a Z-Ring yet, Sun is forced to borrow Kiawe's Z-Ring, but it is destroyed by Gladion's Type: Null before he can receive it. Gladion reveals that he was forced to forfeit the Iki Town tournament due to Hala discovering that Sun obtained a Sparkling Stone from Tapu Koko. Although Gladion claims that Sun wouldn't have won even with the Z-Move, a voice appears and points out that if Gladion truly believed that, he wouldn't have destroyed Kiawe's Z-Ring. The voice is revealed to be Kahili, who uses her Pokémon to attack Type: Null before sending Sun a Z-Ring created by Hala. Sun puts on the Z-Ring and prepares to use it to defeat Gladion.

In PASM13, the attack succeeds, causing Type: Null's mask to start breaking. Gladion, fearing what would happen if the mask shatters completely, switches out for his Porygon. Sun attempts Inferno Overdrive again, but the attack fails, leading to En's defeat. Gladion decides to give up on capturing Tapu Lele, calling it too weak to help him fight the mysterious creatures. Gladion reveals that the cracks in the sky are not an opening but an exit, and that something must be trying to break free into their world.

Later, Gladion traveled to Po Town, Team Skull's base of operations. There, he was attacked by the Team Skull Admin, Plumeria, who wanted to see if Gladion was skilled enough to be an Enforcer. Though Gladion proves to be strong enough for the role, his negative attitude angers Plumeria to the point where she refuses to accept him as a true member of Team Skull. When Plumeria tells Gladion to follow her, Gladion complies, but is momentarily distracted when a Zygarde Core jumps past him.

Later, Gladion appeared at Po Town, where he found Guzma using three Ultra Beasts to attack the Trial Captains and Hau. Gladion demanded that Guzma reveal who gave him the beasts as well as the Cosmog he used to open an Ultra Wormhole. Guzma, annoyed at the accusation that someone is controlling him, sent out his Golisopod to attack, but Gladion managed to dodge it. When Guzma asked to know why Gladion agreed to join Team Skull, he revealed that his true goal is to destroy the Ultra Beasts.

Gladion has Type: Null battle the beasts Guzma summoned, and due to its nature as a Pokémon specifically designed to fight Ultra Beasts, Type: Null is able to inflict more damage on the beasts when the Captains' Pokémon were barely able to make a scratch. Gladion revealed to everyone that Type: Null was created by the Aether Foundation and that Lusamine, the Aether Foundation's president, is just using Guzma to fuel her desire to create a paradise for herself and the Ultra Beasts she loves so much. Guzma rejected Gladion's accusation, but is captured by a Nihilego before he can finish talking. Moon tried to rescue Guzma, but was stopped by a Xurkitree, allowing Nihilego to drag Guzma into an Ultra Wormhole.

Later, the other Ultra Beasts escape from Po Town's barrier, allowing them to wreak havoc on the rest of Ula'ula Island. When the Captains ask Gladion what they can do to help, he refuses to answer due to them claiming that his statements on Lusamine's motives were just lies. He then states that they wouldn't be able to fight the beasts regardless and rides off on Type: Null.

Gladion was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Sun & Moon Series (the Japanese SM Era). It was first released in the Japanese Awakened Heroes expansion before debuting in English in the Crimson Invasion expansion, with an illustration based on the Ken Sugimori artwork of the character. It was also released as a Full Art card in Awakened Heroes and Crimson Invasion, with an illustration by TOKIYA. It allows the player to look at their face-down Prize cards and put 1 of them into their hand. The player then shuffles this card into their remaining Prize cards and put them back face down.
