The Flying type (Japanese: ひこうタイプ Flying type) is one of the eighteen types. Notable Trainers who specialize in Flying-type Pokémon are the Gym Leaders Falkner of Violet City, Winona of Fortree City, Skyla of Mistralton City, and Kahili of Elite Four. Prior to changes in Generation IV, all damaging Flying-type moves were physical, but they may now also be special depending on the attack.
The Flying type (Japanese: ひこうタイプ Flying type) is one of the eighteen types. Flying-type moves are super effective against Bug-, Fighting-, and Grass Pokémon, while Flying-type Pokémon are weak to Electric-, Ice-, and Rock moves.

Characteristics
Additional effects
Defense
From Generation II onwards, Flying-type Pokémon are not considered grounded for effects that affect grounded Pokémon (e.g. entry hazards). This makes Flying-type Pokémon immune to the Ability Arena Trap, the move Rototiller, and all entry hazards (except Stealth Rock), but also from the benefits of terrains (though they can still use Seeds). If Flying-type Pokémon lose their ungrounded status by methods like holding Iron Ball or being under the effect of moves such as Ingrain (Generation IV onward), Gravity, Smack Down or Thousand Arrows, they also lose their immunity to Ground-type Pokémon in addition to those benefitted from being ungrounded. Holding Ring Target makes them lose their type immunity to Ground type moves, but keeps ungrounded status for other effects.
Defensively, the Flying type is very useful for its immunity to the powerful Ground moves and its resistance to Fighting. However, many Flying types have a secondary type that is weak to Fighting, most notably Normal, making their resistance to the Fighting type ineffective. In addition, its weaknesses to Electric, Rock, and Ice are common. Almost all Flying types are dual-typed, thus making some vulnerable to double weaknesses. Flying-type Pokémon are also unaffected by all entry hazards with exception of Stealth Rock, which inflicts damage to Flying types equal to at least a quarter of their HP unless they are also Ground-, Fighting-, or Steel.

Most Flying types have access to Roost, allowing them to restore their health and temporarily lose their Flying type. However, this also makes them vulnerable to Ground-type moves. If a pure Flying-type Pokémon uses Roost, then it will become a ??? type in Generation IV and a Normal type in Generation V onwards.
When a Flying-type uses the move Roost, introduced in Generation IV, it temporarily loses its Flying type for a turn. If a pure Flying-type Pokémon uses Roost, then it will become a ??? type in Generation IV and a Normal type in Generation V onward.

There is a special type of weather that can only be activated by the Ability Delta Stream. It causes moves that would be super effective against pure Flying-type Pokémon to have a neutral type multiplier against the Flying type instead.
The move Sky Drop, introduced in Generation V, allows the user to pick up a Flying-type Pokémon and make it unable to move. However, on the next turn, Sky Drop will fail and free the target, even if the target is grounded.

Offense
The effectiveness of the move Flying Press, introduced in Generation VI, is calculated by multiplying the effectiveness of its move type (usually Fighting) and the Flying type.
Offensively, Flying-type moves are usually only useful when benefited by same-type attack bonus and for their strength against the Fighting type, as well as advantages over Bug and Grass types. Most Flying types have above-average Attack or Special Attack and Speed stats, making them potential offensive sweepers.

The Flying type pairs well with other fairly common attacking types, such as Ground and Fighting. As Dark and Ghost-type moves are no longer resisted by Steel in Generation VI, the Flying-type pairs well with these two types. Most damaging Flying-type moves are also useful for being able to hit any opponent in Triple Battles.
Pokémon
As of Generation IX, there are Flying-type Pokémon or % of all Pokémon (counting those that are Flying-type in at least one of their forms), making it the 4th most common type after Grass and before Psychic. All other types have been paired up with Flying at least once — in Generation VI, after the release of Hawlucha, Flying became the first type to have this trait.

Flying-type Pokémon, on average, have the highest Speed of all Pokémon and of fully evolved Pokémon.
The Pokémon below are listed by their current types. have had their types changed, usually when a new type was introduced.

Contest properties
In Contests, Flying-type moves are typically Cool moves.

Pokémon
As of Generation VII, there are 101 Flying-type Pokémon or 12.6% of all Pokémon (counting those that are Flying-type in at least one of their forms), making it the third most common type after Water and Normal. Every other type has been paired up with the Flying type at least once.

Moves
As of Generation IX, there are 31 Flying-type moves, which makes up 3.32% of all moves (excluding those that are Flying-type only under certain circumstances), causing it to tie with Ground and Dragon as the second rarest type among moves, with Rock as the rarest.
Prior to changes in Generation IV, all damaging Flying-type moves were physical, but they may now also be special depending on the attack.

The Flying type (Japanese: ひこうタイプ Flying type) is one of the eighteen types. Flying-type moves are super effective against Bug-, Fighting-, and Grass-type Pokémon, while Flying-type Pokémon are weak to Electric-, Ice-, and Rock-type moves.

Battle properties

Note: Type effectiveness multipliers may vary in other games outside the core series.

Additional effects

When a Flying-type uses the move Roost, introduced in Generation IV, it temporarily loses its Flying type for a turn. If a pure Flying-type Pokémon uses Roost, then it will become a ??? type in Generation IV and a Normal type in Generation V onward.

The move Sky Drop, introduced in Generation V, allows the user to pick up a Flying-type Pokémon and make it unable to move. However, on the next turn, Sky Drop will fail and free the target, even if the target is grounded.

The effectiveness of the move Flying Press, introduced in Generation VI, is calculated by multiplying the effectiveness of its move type (usually Fighting) and the Flying type.

Pokémon

As of Generation IX, there are 112 Flying-type Pokémon or 10.93% of all Pokémon (counting those that are Flying-type in at least one of their forms), making it the 4th most common type after Grass and before Psychic. All other types have been paired up with Flying at least once — in Generation VI, after the release of Hawlucha, Flying became the first type to have this trait.

The Pokémon below are listed by their current types. Some Pokémon have had their types changed, usually when a new type was introduced.
