Flygon (Japanese: フライゴン Flygon) is a dual-type Ground/Dragon Pokémon.

It evolves from Vibrava starting at level 45. It is the final form of Trapinch.

Biology

Physiology

Flygon is a large insect-like dragon Pokémon resembling a slightly reptilian bipedal dragonfly, primarily light green in color. Flygon has a pair of large green rhombus-shaped wings with a red trim, toeless hind legs and skinny arms with three-clawed hands. Flygon's tail has several dark green stripes and three small green rhombus shapes with red trims at the end. Flygon has red-lensed "goggles" covering its eyes and a pair of green antennae which point back.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Aside from being able to kick up sandstorms, Flygon's other Ability is Levitate, which allows it to avoid Ground attacks such as Earthquake or Magnitude. Its wings also seem to be "singing" when they are flapped, because Flygon flaps its wings at incredibly high speed, which also allows it to fly at unmatched speed.

Also like Vibrava, Flygon also gains access to Draco Meteor.

Behavior

This dragon Pokémon is highly adapted to life in the desert. It's also known as "the spirit of the desert" due to the sound its wings make in sandstorms. When it flaps its wings, it inadvertently kicks up a cloud of dust, which serves to protect it from potential enemies. Its eyes are covered with thick lenses, which prevent particles of sand from disturbing its vision. The flapping wings create a very unusual "singing" sound. Because this sound is usually heard in the presence of sandstorms, the incredible speed this Pokémon flies with, and the reduction of sight in a sandstorm, it was thought that this Pokémon was the spirit of the desert.

Habitat

Although Flygon are hard to find in the wild, they are often seen in deserts punished by harsh sandstorms, often caused by themselves. Most Flygon belong to Trainers, mainly from evolved Vibrava, either caught in the wild or previously evolved from a Trapinch.

Ruby Flygon is nicknamed "the elemental spirit of the desert." Because its flapping wings whip up a cloud of sand, this Pokémon is always enveloped in a sandstorm while flying.
Sapphire Flygon whips up a sandstorm by flapping its wings. The wings create a series of notes that sound like singing. Because the "singing" is the only thing that can be heard in a sandstorm, this Pokémon is said to be the desert spirit.
Emerald The flapping of its wings sounds like singing. To prevent detection by enemies, it hides itself by flapping up a cloud of desert sand.
FireRed It hides itself by kicking up desert sand with its wings. Red covers shield its eyes from sand.

Trivia

  • Flygon and its pre-evolution, Vibrava, share several characteristics usually associated with types other than theirs:
  • Flygon shares the same species name with Xatu. They are both known as Mystic Pokémon.
  • Flygon is the only fully-evolved Pokémon lacking a Hidden Ability that evolves from a Pokémon with a Hidden Ability.
  • Flygon has the same base Attack as its base form, Trapinch.
  • All of Vibrava's base stats go up by exactly 30 points when it evolves into Flygon.
  • Flygon's EV Yield (1 Attack, 2 Speed) is unique.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

Flygon is based on the winged, adult stage of the antlion, which highly resembles a dragonfly. Often the adult antlion and dragonfly are confused with one another, and Flygon could draw inspiration from both. In fact, some species of dragonflies are commonly called "sand dragons", which could account for Vibrava and Flygon's interesting typing. In keeping with its Dragon type, it also possesses a dragonlike build and reptilian features such as its arms and tail.

Name origin

Flygon is a combination of fly and dragon. It may also be a partial anagram of dragonfly.
