Generation I
Generation I
On the turn that Fly is selected, the user will fly up high, where the only attacks it cannot avoid are Bide, Swift, and Transform. On the following turn, Fly will inflict damage, PP will be deducted from it, and it will count as the last move used. Once Fly is selected, the user will be unable to switch out unless Fly is disrupted or fully executed.
On the turn that Fly is selected, the user will fly up high and become semi-invulnerable, where the only attacks it cannot avoid are Bide and Swift. On the following turn, Fly will inflict damage, PP will be deducted from it, and it will count as the last move used. Once Fly is selected, the user will be unable to switch out unless Fly is disrupted or fully executed.

If Fly is not fully executed, PP will not be deducted from it, and it will not count as the last move used. If the opponent uses Mirror Move during the turn that the user flies up high, Mirror Move will copy the move that the user executed immediately before using Fly (or fail if it cannot).
If Fly is not fully executed, PP will not be deducted from it, and it will not count as the last move used. If the opponent uses Mirror Move during the turn that the user flies up high, Mirror Move will copy the move that the user executed immediately before using Fly (or fail if it cannot).
Line 57: Line 81:
Full paralysis and self-inflicted damage due to confusion will disrupt Fly. Additionally, if the user is fully paralyzed during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly, it will not be reset until the user switches out or fully executes Fly.
Full paralysis and self-inflicted damage due to confusion will disrupt Fly. Additionally, if the user is fully paralyzed during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly, it will not be reset until the user switches out or fully executes Fly.

From Pokémon Stadium and on, Fly will allow the user to avoid Bide. Full paralysis will reset the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly. Mirror Move will copy Fly on either of the turns it takes to execute.
From Pokémon Stadium onward, Fly will allow the user to avoid Bide. Full paralysis will reset the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly. Mirror Move will copy Fly on either of the turns it takes to execute.

Pokémon can be caught during the semi-invulnerable stage of Fly.

Generation II
Generation II
Same as Generation I, but the user cannot avoid Gust, Thunder, Twister, or Whirlwind during the semi-invulnerable turn, and will receive double damage from Gust and Twister, unless the flying Pokémon would not receive damage from the moves.
The user can now be hit by Gust, Thunder, Twister, and Whirlwind during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly, and will receive double damage from Gust and Twister.

The user may also be hit in the air if it was previously targeted by Lock-On or Mind Reader, and then struck the following turn, unless said move was Magnitude, Earthquake, or Fissure. Swift and Bide no longer hit on their own during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly.

The user may also be hit in the air if it was previously targeted by Lock-On or Mind Reader, and then struck the following turn. Swift, Bide and Transform no longer hit on their own during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly.
Starting in this generation, if a Pokémon flies into the air but the battle ends before it can come down (such as from a wild Pokémon using Teleport or Self-Destruct), the PP was already deducted on the first turn. No additional PP will be deducted when the move hits on the second turn.

Due to a glitch in this generation only, when Lock-On or Mind Reader are in effect, the moves Attract, Curse, Foresight, Mean Look, Mimic, Nightmare, Spider Web, and Transform cannot hit targets in the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly, and moves cannot lower stats of targets in the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly (status moves such as String Shot will fail, and additional effects of moves such as Bubble will not activate).

Generation III
Generation III
Same as Generation II, but the user is now unable to avoid Sky Uppercut whilst flying up high.
The user can now also be hit by Sky Uppercut during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly.

Magnitude, Earthquake, and Fissure will now hit a Pokémon using Fly as usual when the target is under the effect of Lock-On or Mind Reader.

Generation IV
Fly's base power was increased from 70 to 90. It cannot be used if Gravity is in effect, and if Gravity takes effect on the same turn Fly was used, the latter move is canceled.

Generation IV
The user is now unable to avoid moves used by Pokémon with the Ability No Guard during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly, and unable to avoid moves if it has No Guard. If the user is hit by Gust or Twister during the semi-invulnerable turn, the move's power will be doubled rather than the damage dealt (resulting in virtually the same effect).
Same as Generation III, however, the base power has increased from 70 to 90. The user is now unable to avoid moves used by Pokémon with the Ability No Guard during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly.

Generation V onwards
The user can also be hit with Hurricane, Smack Down, and Thousand Arrows during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly. If Smack Down or Thousand Arrows hits, the user of Fly will be knocked down, cancelling the move. If the user is hit by Gust or Twister during the semi-invulnerable turn, the damage dealt will be doubled rather than the move's power (resulting in virtually the same effect).

If a Power Herb is held by the user, Fly can be executed in one turn.
If a Power Herb is held by the user, Fly can be executed in one turn.

Generation V
Fly can hit non-adjacent opponents in Triple Battles.

Outside of battle
Outside of battle
Players can fly to select spots they've been to; other than the Johto Battle Frontier, which can automatically be accessed after the National Pokédex is obtained.
Flight
Fly is used as a field move to instantly travel to previously visited locations. Most possible Fly destinations are primarily cities and towns, but other significant locations can be flown to as well.

The player usually lands outside the entrance to the area's Pokémon Center. The only exceptions are New Bark Town, Littleroot Town, Twinleaf Town, Nuvema Town (where the player lands outside the player's house), Pallet Town (where the player lands outside Red's house), the Regional Pokémon League (where the player lands at the entrance to the main building), Sinnoh Pal Park (where the player lands at its entrance), National Park (where the player lands outside the Pokéathlon Dome), Victory Road (where the player lands outside the Pokémon League Reception Gate), the Lake of Rage (where the player lands outside of the Fishing Guru's houseHGSS or in the openGSC), and Unity Tower (where the player lands in front of the tower).
In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, players can fly to any area marked on the PokéNav Plus's Town Map. When the player flies to a route or a landmark, they will land in front of a sign that marks the area if there is one, or an otherwise suitable spot. In addition to the Party menu, players can use Fly through the PokéNav Plus.
left clear

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Starting in Generation VII, Fly is no longer a field move. This function is served by the Poké Ride Charizard Glide in SMUSUM; the Secret Technique Sky Dash in LGPE; the Flying Taxi in Pokémon Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet; and the Pokétch's Hidden Moves app in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
Charizard uses Fly as its Up Special move. It cloaks itself in fire as it rotates in the air while gaining height, damaging nearby enemies. It acts as a recovery move for returning to the stage.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
Fly gives the user the Status condition (Mystery Dungeon) status on the first turn. While the user is in the air, the Pokémon cannot be hit by moves (except moves such as Gust, Thunder, Twister and Sky Uppercut). Projectiles will also pass the user as if their tile was empty. On the second turn, the user attacks the enemy in front. In the Rescue Team, Explorers and Adventure Squad series, the move's damage is doubled at the end of damage calculation.

Due to it being a two-turn move, this move cannot be linked. Fly cannot be used in a Pokémon Tower in the Adventure Squad series.

When used by a Gigantic Pokémon in Gates to Infinity, Fly has a base PP of 20, base accuracy of 90%, and the user can move to hit an enemy anywhere in the room.

Super Smash Bros. series
Fly is Charizard's up special. It cloaks itself in fire as it rotates in the air while gaining height, damaging nearby enemies. It acts as a recovery move for returning to the stage.

Moltres's Trophy states that it uses Fly when summoned from a Poké Ball. However, this instance of the move is much more similar to the flying action that a bird makes, rather than the actual move Fly.

The Smash Bros. DOJO!! (SSBB), the official website for Super Smash Bros. Brawl states that Mew, Celebi, and Jirachi all use Fly when leaving the screen after being summoned from a Poké Ball, however, of the three, only Mew can learn it in the core series.<ref>[https://www.smashbros.com/wii/en_us/items/mball/mball10.html Smash Bros. ===UNITE===
In Pokémon UNITE, Fly is Talonflame's first move. It is obtained by evolving from Fletchinder at level 7 and upgrading Acrobatics into it instead of Brave Bird. The user flies up into the sky, becoming untargetable. After 3s, the user dives at the targeted area, damaging all enemies in the area. Fly can be recast to dive early. This move's cooldown is reduced by 40% if it hits an enemy player. At level 13, the hit enemies are also knocked up.

* In the English dub of Fighting Flyer with Fire, Ash told his Charizard to use Fly. In the Japanese version, he merely told Charizard to take flight. In either case, Charizard was unable to execute the command due to a wing injury.

Trivia
Trivia
* Many Pokémon noted for their ability to fly over long distances are unable to learn this move, such as Yanmega, which is easily capable of transporting an adult in flight according to its Pokédex entry from HeartGold and SoulSilver. Conversely, Pokémon such as Vullaby can learn it, despite Pokédex entries stating they are incapable of flight.
* Despite being the second most common type combination, the only Bug types able to learn Fly are Volcarona, Genesect, and Vikavolt, which are not Flying-types.
* In Colosseum, Charizard and Salamence dive into the ground on the second turn of Fly.
* In Colosseum, Charizard and Salamence dive into the ground on the second turn of Fly.
* As of Generation V, Fly is one of four HM moves that can be learned by level-up; the other three are Whirlpool, Waterfall and Dive.
* When Doduo and Dodrio use Fly in the 3D side-series games, they are shown running midair.
** The Salamence Rayquaza that learn it this way are dual-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.
* The Sightseer who gives out TM76 (Fly) in Sun and Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon says that although the machine is an HM in Johto because of its rarity, it is "just another TM" in Alola.
** Fly is also the only one of the four mentioned that is an HM in all generations.
* Although flying Pokémon are commonly shown carrying their Trainers on their backs in the anime, and many of these Pokémon are capable of learning Fly in the games, the move itself would not be depicted in the anime until White—Victini and Zekrom and Black—Victini and Reshiram. This makes Fly the most recent HM move to officially debut in the anime.
* Many Pokémon which are noted for their ability to fly over long distances are unable to learn this move, such as Garchomp. Likewise, many Flying-types cannot learn this apparently due to their size (Drifloon) while their evolutions can, while others can learn it despite their size (Such as Pidgey, who is 1'0").
* Doduo and Dodrio are both able to learn Fly, despite being based on flightless birds.
* Until Generation III, the only Pokémon able to learn Fly (with the exception of Mew, who can learn any TM and HM move) were Flying-type Pokémon.
* Despite the abundance of Pokémon, not a single Bug Pokémon (excluding Arceus holding the Insect Plate) could learn Fly until Generation V.
** Even then, the only Bug Pokémon that can learn Fly are Volcarona and Genesect, neither of which are Flying-type.
*** Yanmega's Pokédex entry in HeartGold and SoulSilver states that it is capable of carrying a human, but cannot learn Fly.
* Fly cannot travel between even the closest of areas in Kanto and Johto, despite being able to fly over either of the regions. This is most evident at Mt. Silver and 27. However, in , any area in either region can be flown to from Indigo Plateau and 26.
* In The Last Battle VII, Chuchu used balloons to protect Pika and their Egg, lifting them in the air as a Pikachu variants.

Fly (Japanese: そらをとぶ Fly) is a damage-dealing Flying-type move introduced in Generation I.

It is:

Effect

In battle

Generation I

Full paralysis and self-inflicted damage due to confusion will disrupt Fly. Additionally, if the user is fully paralyzed during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly, it will not be reset until the user switches out or fully executes Fly.

The user can now be hit by Gust, Thunder, Twister, and Whirlwind during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly, and will receive double damage from Gust and Twister.

The user may also be hit in the air if it was previously targeted by Lock-On or Mind Reader, and then struck the following turn, unless said move was Magnitude, Earthquake, or Fissure. Swift and Bide no longer hit on their own during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly.

The user can now also be hit by Sky Uppercut during the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly.

Magnitude, Earthquake, and Fissure will now hit a Pokémon using Fly as usual when the target is under the effect of Lock-On or Mind Reader.

Generation IV

Fly's base power was increased from 70 to 90. It cannot be used if Gravity is in effect, and if Gravity takes effect on the same turn Fly was used, the latter move is canceled.

Fly can hit non-adjacent opponents in Triple Battles.

Outside of battle

Main article: Flight

Fly is used as a field move to instantly travel to previously visited locations. Most possible Fly destinations are primarily cities and towns, but other significant locations can be flown to as well.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, players can fly to any area marked on the PokéNav Plus's Town Map. When the player flies to a route or a landmark, they will land in front of a sign that marks the area if there is one, or an otherwise suitable spot. In addition to the Party menu, players can use Fly through the AreaNav.

Starting in Generation VII, Fly is no longer a field move. This function is served by the Poké Ride Charizard Glide in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon; the Secret Technique Sky Dash in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!; the Flying Taxi in Pokémon Sword, Shield, Scarlet, and Violet; and the Pokétch's Hidden Moves app in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

Fly gives the user the flying status on the first turn.

With some exceptions, Pokémon learnsets match those from the core series games:

Super Smash Bros. series

Fly is Charizard's up special. It cloaks itself in fire as it rotates in the air while gaining height, damaging nearby enemies. It acts as a recovery move for returning to the stage.

Moltres's Trophy states that it uses Fly when summoned from a Poké Ball. However, this instance of the move is much more similar to the flying action that a bird makes, rather than the actual move Fly.

The Smash Bros. DOJO!!, the official website for Super Smash Bros. Brawl states that Mew, Celebi, and Jirachi all use Fly when leaving the screen after being summoned from a Poké Ball, however, of the three, only Mew can learn it in the core series.[1]

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Fly is Talonflame's first move. It is obtained by evolving from Fletchinder at level 7 and upgrading Acrobatics into it instead of Brave Bird. The user flies up into the sky, becoming untargetable. After 3s, the user dives at the targeted area, damaging all enemies in the area. Fly can be recast to dive early. This move's cooldown is reduced by 40% if it hits an enemy player. At level 13, the hit enemies are also knocked up.

Trivia

 • Many Pokémon noted for their ability to fly over long distances are unable to learn this move, such as Yanmega, which is easily capable of transporting an adult in flight according to its Pokédex entry from HeartGold. Conversely, Pokémon such as Vullaby can learn it, despite Pokédex entries stating they are incapable of flight.
 • Despite Bug/Flying being the second most common type combination, the only Bug types able to learn Fly are Volcarona, Genesect, and Vikavolt, which are not Flying-types.
 • In Pokémon Colosseum, Charizard and Salamence dive into the ground on the second turn of Fly.
 • When Doduo and Dodrio use Fly in the 3D side-series games, they are shown running midair.
 • The Sightseer who gives out TM76 (Fly) in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon says that although the machine is an HM in Johto because of its rarity, it is "just another TM" in Alola.
 • Although flying Pokémon are commonly shown carrying their Trainers on their backs in the anime, and many of these Pokémon are capable of learning Fly in the games, the move itself would not be depicted in the anime until White—Victini and Zekrom and Black—Victini and Reshiram. This makes Fly the most recent HM move to officially debut in the anime.
