Flint's Infernape (Japanese: オーバのゴウカザル Ōba's Goukazaru) is the only known Pokémon owned by Flint in the anime. It is also one of the Pokémon he uses in the games, being his main one in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

History

As a Chimchar

In Flint Sparks the Fire! Chimchar was first shown battling by Flint's side as a child. At the time, Sunyshore was full of hoodlums. It took on two Trainers who sent out Stunky and Jolteon, who were defeated rather easily. Before long, Flint and Chimchar were known as the strongest Trainers in all of Sunyshore, winning battle after battle on their way to the top. When Flint first met Volkner, Chimchar battled his Pikachu and won. Afterwards, they had a rematch, which it lost, causing a rivalry between the two Trainers. Later, the two were shown wondering in a forest at night, during a rain. It was here they encountered a rogue poacher and his Houndoom, later revealed to be the Proprietor, a good friend of both in the present. Chimchar and Flint get knocked by the blast coming from Houndoom, leaving Volkner to continue on his own. Finishing up with Volt Tackle, the poacher is finally chased away. Exhausted from the battle, the gang is shown lying on the ground, becoming friends since that day.

As a Monferno

Afterwards, Chimchar had many battles with Volkner's Pikachu, until Flint finally decided to leave the city on the journey to becoming stronger. In Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, battling in all conditions, Chimchar was shown to have evolved into Monferno. In the same episode, Flint was shown battling in the Pokémon League, sending out Monferno against a Snorlax. Monferno began with Flamethrower and Snorlax used Whirlwind. Both moves canceled each other out. Monferno then used Mach Punch, which Snorlax absorbed easily. Afterwards, Snorlax used Body Slam which successfully made contact with Monferno. However, the rest of the battle wasn't shown. Before long, Monferno evolved to Infernape and Flint became a member of the Sinnoh Elite Four.

Flint and his Infernape

In Flint Sparks the Fire!, Infernape made its first appearance where it saved Ash from Volkner's Gym's arm machines that had grabbed him as he refused to take a free Badge, which Volkner was now giving away due to loss of passion in battling. Fruitlessly trying to convince him to have the battle, the decision was made for Flint to battle Ash in place, which Volkner agreed to watch. Taking on Buizel as its first opponent, Buizel started out with Water Gun, which Infernape dodged by jumping. While still in the air, Ash then ordered Buizel to use Ice Punch, blocked by Infernape. With its hands now frozen, Buizel then unleashed Sonic Boom, only to free them in the process. As its final move, Buizel went out charging with Aqua Jet, countered by Infernape's Flare Blitz. Despite the type-advantage, Buizel was taken out of the match. Infernape's next opponent was none other than Infernape. Ash's Infernape started off with a Flame Wheel, which Flint's evades. It then used a series of Mach Punches, all of which were dodged. Despite a vigorous attempt, Ash's Infernape proved no match either, as it was knocked out by an exceedingly powerful Mach Punch, earning Flint's Infernape two wins in a row. Infernape's last opponent was Pikachu. Unlike the last two, it held on well. During the battle, it sparked the flashback of Volkner battling side-by-side with Flint in the woods. After a long battle, Pikachu went charging with Volt Tackle, clashed by Infernape's Thunder Punch. As Pikachu was finally unable to continue, Flint was awarded the win of the match.

In Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, Infernape came to the rescue when Team Rocket robbed Kenny's Floatzel. Infernape stopped them by using Overheat and sent them blasting off. Afterwards, it had a battle with Jasmine's Steelix, which Infernape again won with a single Flare Blitz.

Infernape also appeared alongside Flint during the credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

In Memories are Made of Bliss! Infernape was seen battling against Cynthia's Garchomp on TV. Despite a very harsh battle, Infernape could not beat Garchomp, and was knocked out by the Mach Pokémon's Dragon Rush.

Personality and characteristics

Infernape is considered to be quite a humdinger, as it is very well-trained and powerful. This strength was first shown when it was still a Chimchar where it took out a Stunky and Jolteon singlehandedly. The same also applies to Flint's battle with Ash when it easily took out all three of his Pokémon. Infernape is also highly persistent, fighting to the very end with Garchomp in Flint's battle with Cynthia even after having been previously weakened from defeating two of her other Pokémon.

Infernape is Flint's highest-leveled Pokémon in Diamond and Pearl, and though it isn't in Platinum (that position being given to his Magmortar instead), it is still used in his team when rebattling the Elite Four.

Trivia

• Out of all the Elite Four's Pokémon (excluding anime-considered Champions such as Lance and Cynthia), Infernape is the only one to make more than one physical appearance in the anime.
• Infernape is subject to a continuity error: in Flint Sparks the Fire!, it was shown to still be a Chimchar when Flint is an adult, but is a Monferno in Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, where Flint is still a child. It's unknown if Monferno's appearance is a mistake or a retcon to their story.
