The user | In Explorers of Time and Darkness, Fling is a non-damaging move with 16PP that ignores accuracy and evasion checks. The user sends the enemy in front flying to another tile in the room. If there's another hostile Pokémon in the range, the target will bounce off of it before landing, causing both of them take 10 damage. | ||
In Explorers of Sky, the move is now affected by Taunt. | |||
In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, using Fling opens the inventory and allows the leader to choose an item to fling (excluding held items). It only works when a visible enemy is within a fan-shaped area up to 10 tiles in front. Like Gravelerocks, the item will be flung in an arc, but otherwise has the same effect as when thrown normally. Partner Pokémon can use this move to fling their held item. Though Fling is listed as a status move, it is unaffected by Prankster. | |||

Fling (Japanese: なげつける Throw) is a damage-dealing Dark-type move introduced in Generation IV. It was TM56 in Generations IV through VII, and is TM59 in Generation VIII.
Effect
This move effect may be in need of research. Reason: The following items are missing, or the damage dealt is unknown: Max Honey, Wishing Chip, and Ingredients |
The power of Fling is determined by the user's held item. The move will fail if the user has no held item, or if the item is not one listed below. After using Fling, the item is consumed, even if the target has protected themselves with a move like Protect or Detect.
The power of Fling is calculated as:
Black Glasses, Dread Plate, Muscle Band, and Choice Band boost the power of Fling. Expert Belt boosts the power of Fling if the attack is super effective. Life Orb boosts the power of Fling but does not reduce the user's HP.
If Fling hits the target with a Berry, that Berry will activate (even if its usual trigger condition is not satisfied). Additionally, some items have custom effects when used with Fling:
Item | Effect | Power |
---|---|---|
Flame Orb | Burns the target | 30 |
King's Rock | Causes the target to flinch | 30 |
Light Ball | Paralyzes the target | 30 |
Mental Herb | Cures the effects of infatuation, Taunt, Encore, Torment, and Disable and Cursed Body* from the target | 10 |
Poison Barb | Poisons the target | 70 |
Razor Fang | Causes the target to flinch | 30 |
Toxic Orb | Badly poisons the target | 30 |
White Herb | Restores lowered stats of the target | 10 |
Fling will fail if used by an Arceus holding a Plate, a Giratina holding the Griseous Orb, a Genesect holding a Drive, or a Silvally holding a memory. Fling will fail if used by a Pokémon holding a Mega Stone that allows it to Mega Evolve. It will also fail if the Pokémon is holding a TM, an Ability Capsule, a Festival Ticket, Red Orb or Blue Orb, Rusted Sword or Rusted Shield, or any type of Apricorn, Gem, Poké Ball, Mail, or Z-Crystal. Embargo, Klutz (from Generation V onward), Magic Room, and Unnerve (if the Pokémon is holding a Berry) all prevent the usage of Fling. In Generation IV only, if the target of Fling is under the effect of Embargo, the item's effect will not activate.
Fling can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if a certain move (Celebrate, Covet, Happy Hour, or Wish) was used in the prior turn.
If the user holds a TR, Fling's power is equal to the power of the move the TR contains, unless the move does not list a specific power (i.e. it is a status move or has variable power with no default power), in which case it has 10 power. TR71 (Leaf Storm) and TR43 (Overheat) match the Iron Ball in producing the maximum possible Fling power of 130.

In Explorers of Time and Darkness, Fling is a non-damaging move with 16PP that ignores accuracy and evasion checks.
Pokémon Rumble
Fling will deal damage but also throws coins.

Trivia
- Fling, along with Fake Out, are the only moves that have a 100% chance of causing flinching, though a King's Rock or Razor Fang must be flung in order to cause flinching.
- Fling will fail if the user is holding a Poké Ball of any kind. This is probably to prevent confusion should a flung Poké Ball hit a wild Pokémon and do damage rather than try to catch it.
- Fling is the only Dark-type move able to cause paralysis, burn, or poisoning.
- In the anime, Fling can also be used to throw the remains of attacks, such as when Bianca's Emboar flung the remains of Trip's Conkeldurr's Stone Edge at it. It can also be used to throw the opponent.
