Please feel free to edit this article to add missing information and complete it.

????? appears in Generation II games. It is the result of forcing a nonexistent Pokémon numbered 000, 252, 254, or 255 to appear, though it has been encountered in the wild during normal play. Although all these numbers appear identical (as just a nonsensical assortment of various graphics from other parts of the game), they each use a different palette, so #252 appears gold, #000 appears blue, and so on.

When viewing the status screen of any ?????, it may not render correctly and may even cause the game to stop functioning correctly. Usually the status screen reports an abnormal value under "level up" that indicates the quantity required to reach the next level. Different forms have different types. It will also display that it is a Template:Shiny2 Pokémon.

All variations of ????? lack their own battle sprites besides the one seen by the trainer battling it. When a trainer uses any variation of ?????, it will borrow the last sprite used in the battle area, be it the original trainer that appears before the battle starts, or another Pokémon that has been switched out. Any of these will have the color palette that the particular form of ????? uses.

It has no readable Pokédex data, however it has a footprint. The footprint is identical to that of Donphan, with the exception that the numbers 000, 252, 254, and 255 are printed in the middle of it for the appropriate Pokémon.

As a wild Pokémon

If a player encounters ????? they will not be able to catch it as the game will presume the player is in a link battle; if the player decides to run switch or make a move the game will display 'Waiting...' until the game is turned off.

However, if one activates the code the moment the Pokéball is thrown if this Pokéball catches the Pokémon the game will not crash unless the Pokédex data is invalid.

'Cloaking abilities'

If ????? is the glitch with an index number of 255 (Hex FF) it will act as the 'cancel' on the party Pokémon screen. In other words it cannot be healed by the use of a Pokémon center. When this glitch is placed above other Pokémon in the party screen those Pokémon also cannot be healed. However, if ?????s health is low the player can use a max potion to fully restore its health and any Pokémon below it.

Interestingly this Pokémon can be taken into the time machine and can even 'hide' the Pokémon below it which were non-existant in Generation I since 'Cancel' is essential; these will appear as a glitch Pokémon with the equivalent index number.

The player cannot deposit this ????? without the use of an external device because it will replace itself and all Pokémon below it with 'CANCEL'.

Trivia

  • The FC variation is unique in that it naturally learns moves, unlike its three counterparts.
