In Generation II they were depicted as overweight clowns spewing out flames, while HeartGold and SoulSilver redesigned them and they now wear clothing designed after Magmar.

They specialize in Fire-type Pokémon. They may, however, use Poison-type Pokémon that produce smoke, like Koffing and Weezing, as well.

During the tournament, Takeo managed to get to the final round where he faced off against Gold and Bugsy. Despite putting up a great fight, Gold ultimately defeats him.
