Fearow is a large, mostly brown avian Pokémon with a vulturine neck and broad, powerful wings. It has a long, pointed, pink beak, and a decorative red coxcomb on top of its head. Its narrow eyes have very small pupils, and do not appear to have colored irises. It has shaggy, feathers on the base of its neck and covering the upper portion of its wings. These feathers are cream-colored, as are the tips of its flight feathers. Its sharp-clawed talons are pink, with three toes pointing forward and one pointing backward.

Fearow has been around mostly unchanged for many years, as a Pokémon resembling it has been seen on ancient murals. Its large wings and stamina allow it to fly for an entire day without landing. Its long neck and beak allow it to pluck prey from both land and water, and it has even been known to steal from unwary humans. It will shoot upward, and then dive down to catch prey. It will also catch tiny insects that hide underground and circle the ocean for fish. Fearow are found naturally in open habitats with warmer climates, mainly {{DL|List of Pokémon by habitat|Rough-terrain Pokémon|wastelands and desolate fields}}.

* In [[Generation IV]], Fearow weighs as much as {{ga|Lucas}}. It shares this characteristic with {{p|Skuntank}}, {{p|Togekiss}}, {{p|Sudowoodo}}, and {{p|Yanma}}.
* Fearow is the only {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} with a base stat total of 442.
* The English names of the {{p|Spearow}} family and {{p|Beedrill}} are almost reversed from the Japanese in that Beedrill is named Spear and Fearow, Spearow's evolution, is called Onidrill.

===Origin===
Fearow takes inspiration from many soaring, predatory birds. It has traits similar to raptors such as {{wp|hawk}}s and {{wp|vulture}}s, as well as similarities with {{wp|stork}}s. Its physical appearance may be vaguely based on a {{wp|cormorant}} or an {{wp|anhinga}}, despite the fact that they are water birds. It also shares characteristics with {{wp|chicken}}s and {{wp|snipe}}, most notably its {{wp|Comb (anatomy)|comb}} and long beak, respectively. Its coloration and size also resembles the {{wp|Goliath Heron}}, whose feathers when ruffled look superficially like a comb.
Fearow seems to be based on various predatory birds, particularly {{wp|vulture}}s and {{wp|condor}}s due to its long neck, sharp beak, shaggy feathers, broad wings, and soaring flight. The {{wp|comb (anatomy)|comb}} on its head is similar to a {{wp|rooster|rooster}}'s comb or a {{wp|mohawk hairstyle}}. Its long neck and beak are also reminiscent of various water birds such as {{wp|cormorant}}s, {{wp|darter}}s, {{wp|stork}}s, and {{wp|heron}}s, particularly the {{wp|Goliath heron}}. Its Pokédex entries describe multiple hunting methods, either divebombing prey like {{wp|falcon}}s and {{wp|hawk}}s or probing through soil and water like {{wp|sandpiper}}s and {{wp|snipe}}s.

Fearow (Japanese: オニドリル Onidrill) is a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves from Spearow starting at level 20.

Biology

Fearow is a large, mostly brown avian Pokémon with a vulturine neck and broad, powerful wings. It has a long, pointed, pink beak and a decorative red coxcomb on top of its head. Its narrow eyes have very small pupils and do not appear to have colored irises. It has shaggy, feathers at the base of its neck and covering the upper portion of its wings.

Fearow are found naturally in open habitats with warmer climates, mainly wastelands and desolate fields.

Evolution

Fearow evolves from Spearow.

(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Trivia

  • Fearow is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 442.

Origin

Fearow seems to be based on various predatory birds, particularly vultures and condors due to its long neck, sharp beak, shaggy feathers, broad wings, and soaring flight. The comb on its head is similar to a rooster's comb or a mohawk hairstyle. Its long neck and beak are also reminiscent of various water birds such as cormorants, darters, storks, and herons, particularly the Goliath heron. Its Pokédex entries describe multiple hunting methods, either divebombing prey like falcons and hawks or probing through soil and water like sandpipers and snipes.

Name origin

Fearow may be a combination of fear (referring to its intimidating appearance) and sparrow. It may also involve feather and arrow (referring to its sharp beak).

Onidrill may be a combination of 鬼 oni (demon), 鳥 tori (bird), and ドリル doriru (drill).
