False Swipe (Japanese: みねうち Strike with the Back of the Sword) is a damage-dealing Normal-type move introduced in Generation II. It was TM54 from Generation IV to Generation VII, and is TM94 in Generation VIII.

Effect

False Swipe inflicts damage, but will leave the target with 1 HP if it would otherwise cause it to faint. If the target has 1 HP remaining, False Swipe will hit and leave the target at 1 HP.

If used against a substitute, False Swipe is able to break it and will not leave the substitute with 1 HP.

False Swipe can also be used as part of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining an extra appeal point if move Swords Dance was used in the prior turn.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, False Swipe is a move with 40 base power, 100% accuracy, and 15PP. The user attacks an enemy in front of them, but cannot cause them to faint. Despite being a damaging move that follows the normal damage calculation, it cannot be boosted with Ginseng

In Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, the move can now be boosted with Ginseng.

In Gates to Infinity and Rescue Team DX, False Swipe can cause the enemy to faint, increasing the chance of that Pokémon joining the team if it does. False Swipe's effect is reverted to that of the previous games in Super Mystery Dungeon however, as recruitment is not present in this entry.

Trivia

  • False Swipe's Japanese name is a reference to katanas, which are designed to have a single cutting edge on one side, while the other side is mostly flat. Thus, striking the opponent with the flat side of the katana would not be fatal.
