As it was created to balance the competitive play in Generation VI, the Fairy-type is considered to be one of the best defensive types, along with the Steel-type. As such, it is considered to be an anti-metagame type, having traits that no other is capable of offering - a key resistance to the powerful Fighting types, as well as the Dark and Bug types, granting resistances to overused moves like Close Combat, Knock Off and U-turn. Most of all, it also has a useful immunity to Dragon-type moves. Its only weaknesses are to Poison and Steel, both of which were rarely used offensively prior to its introduction.

Since the Pokémon of this type tend to have a high Special Defense, they excel at the role of being a special wall, further strengthened by the fact that there are few powerful special attackers among Steel and Poison types.

Fairy type Pokémon also tend to have a below average Defense stat, though there are some exceptions, such as Mawile, Carbink and Togekiss.

Fairy is quite strong on offense as well. It is super-effective against Dragon, Fighting, and Dark, all of which previously had two weaknesses. It is resisted by Fire, Poison, and Steel types. Most Fire types struggle defensively and cannot hit Fairy types super effectively in return, making Poison and Steel-types the only true threats against them, even if the former is weak to Psychic-type moves, common among Fairy Pokémon. Additionally, all three of those types are weak to Ground, making a Fairy and Ground a viable attack combination to use. Fairy also pairs well with Ghost and Dark, with the former combination being resisted only by Litleo and Pyroar and the latter being resisted only by Mawile and Klefki.

Despite having numerous advantages, the Fairy type is a balanced one due to the lack of particularly powerful Fairy-type moves, being somewhat weak statistically and having a disadvantageous match-up against the Poison and Steel-type, two of the best defensive types in the series. Also, since Fairy types typically have high Special Attack and Special Defense, but relatively low Defense and Speed stats, they have advantageous match-ups against most special attackers, but poor ones against physical attackers, overall.

Contest properties

In Contests, Fairy-type moves are typically Beautiful moves. None of them are considered Cool or Tough moves.

As of Generation VI, there are 37 Fairy-type Pokémon, or 5.1% of all Pokémon (counting forms and Mega Evolutions that change typing as different Pokémon), making it the third rarest Pokémon type, behind Ghost and Ice.

Interacting with Fairy-type

User of Color Change will be changed into Fairy-type after it is hit with a Fairy-type move. Protean will change its user into Fairy-type when it uses a Fairy-type move. When a Pokémon with Multitype holds a Pixie Plate, it will become a Fairy-type Pokémon. When a Pokémon with Imposter is sent out and its opposite opponent is Fairy-type, it will transform into that Pokémon and turn into Fairy-type.

  • More Pokémon were changed to Fairy than either of the other types added since Generation I (the other two being Dark and Steel in Generation II), with 22. Also, more moves were changed to Fairy, with three. All three of them were introduced in Generation II and were previously Normal-type.
    • It is also the only one out of the three types to completely change the types of Pokémon from previous generations, changing several previously pure Normal-type Pokémon, such as Snubbull, to pure Fairy.
  • Every type that resists Fairy also resists Grass and Bug.
  • The Fairy-type is one of the two types that Hidden Power cannot become, the other being the Normal-type.
    • This, combined with the lack of any Fairy-type moves in Kecleon's and Greninja's movesets, prevents all Pokémon that naturally have Protean from becoming Fairy-type using it (although Kecleon can become Fairy-type with its other Ability, Color Change).
  • The Fairy type has the fewest physical moves of all types, with only one.
