===Defense===
===Defense===
The Fairy type is considered to be one of the best defensive types, along with the {{t|Steel}} type. It has a key resistance to the powerful and common {{t|Fighting}} type, as well as the {{t|Dark}} and {{t|Bug}} types, making it very difficult to cover against. Its most crucial defensive aspect, however, is its immunity to {{type|Dragon}} moves, to which nothing else is immune and which is only resisted by Steel. Fairy's only weaknesses are to {{t|Poison}} and Steel, both of which were rarely used offensively prior to its introduction, and even post-introduction, there are scarce instances of powerful offense in those types.
The Pokémon of this type have the highest average {{stat|Special Defense}} of all types. <!--as of Generation 7-->

Since the Pokémon of this type tend to have a high {{stat|Special Defense}}, they excel at the role of being a special wall, further strengthened by the fact that there are very few powerful special attackers among Steel and Poison types, neutral coverage moves will rarely do much damage.

However, Fairy-types tend to have unimpressive {{stat|Defense}}, and although they resist common physical attack types such as Fighting and Dark, they are very easily taken out by physical Steel or Poison moves such as {{m|Iron Head}} and {{m|Gunk Shot}}, made worse by the typically mediocre {{stat|Speed}} Fairy-types possess.

===Offense===
===Offense===
Fairy is also quite strong offensively. It is [[super-effective]] against {{t|Dragon}}, {{t|Fighting}}, and {{t|Dark}}, all of which previously only had two weaknesses. Because {{m|Hidden Power}} cannot be Fairy-type, {{m|Dazzling Gleam}} and {{m|Play Rough}} are the only effective coverage move for non-Fairy-types. Fairy is resisted by the {{t|Fire}}, Poison, and Steel-types. However, Fire-types often struggle defensively and are not super-effective against Fairy. Poison, however, is weak to {{t|Psychic}}-type moves which Fairy Pokémon are frequently able to learn.
Fairy attacks are resisted by {{t|Poison}}, but Poison is weak to {{t|Psychic}}-type moves, which Fairy Pokémon are frequently able to learn. Additionally, all three of the types that resist Fairy are weak to {{t|Ground}}, making Fairy and Ground a strong attacking combination.

Additionally, all three of the types that resist Fairy are weak to {{t|Ground}}, making Fairy and Ground a strong hypothetical combination. No Fairy/Ground types exist, however, and Fairy types are generally unable to learn any Ground moves. Fairy also pairs well offensively with {{t|Ghost}} and Dark, with the former combination being resisted only by {{p|Litleo}} and {{p|Pyroar}} and the latter being resisted only by {{t|Steel}}/Fairy types.

Similarly to Dragon-types, though, Fairy's offensive moves generally rely on high {{stat|Special Attack}} and [[same-type attack bonus]], and their raw power tends to be underwhelming. The type's weakness against Poison and Steel, which are also both super-effective against it, meaning that Fairy types generally have few options against these types.

Fairy-type Pokémon, on average, have the lowest Attack of all Pokémon and the highest Special Defense of fully evolved Pokémon.
Fairy-type Pokémon, on average, have the lowest physical Attack of all Pokémon. <!--as of Generation 7-->

Characteristics

Defense

The Pokémon of this type have the highest average Special Defense of all types.

Offense

Fairy attacks are resisted by Poison, but Poison is weak to Psychic-type moves, which Fairy Pokémon are frequently able to learn. Additionally, all three of the types that resist Fairy are weak to Ground, making Fairy and Ground a strong attacking combination.

Fairy-type Pokémon, on average, have the lowest physical Attack of all Pokémon.

Contest properties

In Contests, Fairy-type moves are typically Beautiful and Cute moves. None of them are considered Cool or Tough moves.

Pokémon

As of Generation VII, there are 50 Fairy-type Pokémon or 6.2% of all Pokémon (counting those that are Fairy-type in at least one of their forms, including Mega Evolutions and Alola Forms), making it the third rarest type, tying with Dragon, only behind Ice and Ghost.

In the TCG

Main article: Fairy (TCG)

Introduced in the Kalos Starter Set set, Fairy-type Pokémon in the TCG are generally weak to Metal with resistances to Darkness. Fairy-type Pokémon can be strong against Dragon, whilst no Pokémon can resist this type.

Trivia

  • More Pokémon were changed to Fairy than either of the other types added since Generation I (the other two being Dark and Steel in Generation II), with 22. Also, more moves were changed to Fairy, with three. All three of them were Status moves introduced in Generation II and were previously Normal-type.
    • It is also the only one out of the three types to completely change the types of Pokémon from previous generations, changing several previously pure Normal-type Pokémon, such as Snubbull, to pure Fairy.
  • The Fairy type is the only type without any Pokémon with gender differences.
  • Every type that resists Fairy also resists Grass and Bug and is weak to Ground.
    • The types that resist Fairy are the three types with the most resistances.
  • The Fairy-type is one of the two types that Hidden Power cannot become, the other being the Normal-type.
    • This, combined with the lack of any Fairy-type moves in Kecleon's and Greninja's movesets, prevents all Pokémon that naturally have Protean from becoming Fairy-type using it (although Kecleon can become Fairy-type with its other Ability, Color Change).
  • The Fairy type has the fewest physical moves of all types.
  • Dazzling Gleam is the only Fairy-type move that is available via a TM.
